Re: Lower Susquehanna

I ran down to lock 2 on Saturday just to see what it was like. It there was so much wind that the river looked like it was flowing backwards. It didn't look like it would be a very good ride.:D

I did a shake down run today in preparation for next weekends Chesapeake bay trip. I learn one thing. They took the courtesy docks out.

Boat ran great. Once in a while I have trouble shifting into forward. Of course it is always at an inopportune time.:(

Re: Lower Susquehanna

I was reading some postings in the upper Chesapeake thread about boating on Conawingo. Maybe next season we can get a group together to hit the area. I have never been there and would love to follow a veteran.

No problem! And john anytime you'd want to head down there I'd be happy to go.

This is my uncle's place down there:

Gents,

That sounds like a good idea. Assuming I ever get my tub put back together, i'd be in for a meeting.

As far a Conawingo is concerned, EZ makes it sound like a slice of water heaven :)

Anyway it would be cool to get all of us lower Susquehanna guys and gals together. I'll be spending most of my time on Lake Clarke.

I'll be looking for ya guys

Re: Lower Susquehanna

We recently got a boat (predominantly for water sports, ~20 ft inboard) and were hoping to get to some of the spots on the Susquehanna next season since we're only an hour and a half or so away. From just some internet searching and this thread it sounds like Lake Clarke may be the most appropriate but open to some additional suggestions in the area.

I'm hoping to get some details on the public ramps/accesses, and some of the specifics on a day trip. Things like trailer parking areas, any publicly available docks for water downtime (or if there are none, and where we can keep the boat). I found this ramp on google maps

Lock 2 public area?

I think this is what they call the Lock-2 area is that right? I see a lot of picnic areas around as well as what looks like some parking lots for trailers. Is that dock accessible during the day/evening to get off the water or do we have to beach/anchor the boat somewhere?

Geographically I'm coming from the East. From the thread it sounded like there were no ramps on the east side, but the lake map lists one in Colombia. I believe this is it? Any feedback on launching in this area?

Columbia Ramp?

The lake map also lists one on the west side more north in Wrightsville but I wasn't exactly sure which one that was on the map.

I'm mostly trying to find a good place to get access to the water and make it reasonably easy on a day trip (in & out, picnic type areas and a dock or accessible anchoring area to get off the water, etc). Any details on the spots above or other good suggestions & details? Thanks a bunch.

Re: Lower Susquehanna

Where are you from pfunk42? If there even is a ramp in Columbia....it's up in the shallow rocky part of the river so you wouldn't want to use it. Lock 2 is where you want to go. There are 2 double ramps and a good amount of parking. There is some picnic area. It gets CRAZY on hot weekends but it pretty slow during the week. I tend to go to Clarke on the weekends after work and to Conowingo on the weekends.

Thanks for the info. I'm out near the West Chester/Downingtown area.

Where do you launch at Conowingo?

Re: Lower Susquehanna

The Columbia and Wrightsville ramps are both up at the Route 462 bridge. Only good for small boats.:(

Re: Lower Susquehanna

Thanks again, can only get so much without some first hand info :) Sounds like Lock 2 is the place to go. What do you do with your boats if/when you want to get off the water but not done for the day yet? Is there a public dock, or is it reasonable to anchor a bit off shore and walk in?

Re: Lower Susquehanna

There is a public dock. I wouldn't want to leave my boat there for too long during peak loading/unloading times but the rest of the day I think it would be fine.

Yep, there are 2 of them just to the side of the Lock 2 ramp. There is a bunch of picnic tables right there in the grass to use as well. The public dock can probably hold between 6 and 8 boats together depending on the size. I believe that the sign posted at the docks says that you can't leave you boat tied up any longer than 2 hours though.

Here is a link to a map that may help you some more:

Re: Lower Susquehanna

Since is it almost March I figured I better start doing some prep work a while. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to send my prop to get straightened? The bag that it was in when I got the boat was from Skip's in Shillington but that seems to be closed.

Im having trouble finding someone local too. A bunch online out of state guys but thats it. I put a new prop on mid summer last year and kinda dinged up the edges in september trying to trailer my boat at low tide on the bush river. Heck its hard to even find a local marine dealer/shop any more they are dropping like flies, I know of 5 places that have gone out of buisness locally since october. And the one that is left close to me charges $130 an hour 90 if you bought your boat there... LOL

Re: Lower Susquehanna

My boat isn't done yet. This nice weather is great to work in but makes me feel like I'm behind schedule! Fortunately my dad bought a little 14' tinny in the fall that we can use in the meantime. I'm hoping to get on the water in April. I'll gladly accept rides prior to then :p
