Re: Lower Susquehanna

I was going to go out tonight but couldn't find anyone to help me launch and retrieve.:(

Sounds like it is time for some practice launching a retrieving by yourself. :D

I know that it sounds a little bit intimidating but its not to bad. It has been discussed on here several times. Depending on the size and style of your boat it may be a little bit extra work and running around but it is very feasible. Maybe try it while someone else is there to help you but don't let them unless you get into trouble.

Oh yeah, try to do it when you know the water level will be high for the first time. Low water level just makes it a little bit harder, not impossible, just have to be a little more precise.

Here is a link to check the water level at Long Level before you head out:

Good Luck!

Re: Lower Susquehanna

Thanks Brandon. I am not as worried about launching are retrieve by myself as much as hold everyone else up. Would people get impatient while I park the boat at the dock and run over to move the truck and trailer and then reverse the procedure?

Re: Lower Susquehanna

John, I launch and retrieve by myself all the time at Long Level during the week. I wouldn't worry about it. Use the downriver ramps because there's parking like 50 yards away so it's not like you'd be holding people up for long while you parked. And that's assuming there's even anyone waiting. I would imagine it will be pretty dead down there from here on out in '09 during the week anyway.

Re: Lower Susquehanna

Yeah, I agree with ezmobee. Most of the time people are pretty understanding. If you use Lock 2 as your ramp, you can always tie the boat up at the courtsey dock, back the truck in and then run over and load the boat. I don't think anyone will complain that it took an extra minute to load up.

Again, depending on when you go, there might not even be anyone else trying to use the ramp at the same time.

Good luck!

If nothing else happens, DW and I are going to head out Sat. afternoon. Then when DS gets off work he will meet us.
Dumb question. Is there c-phone reception down there?

Re: Lower Susquehanna

Sounds like fun! Wish I could head out too but I am stuck at work today and tomorrow. Just found out that I am off on Monday so we are headed down to the bay Sunday night!!!

Was out at long level for the evening last night! Took some extended family out to ski and tube for awhile! We had a blast but the water cooled down quite a bit lately with these could nights! Dropped almost 10 degrees in the last weeks or so! It was 74 on the surface last night according to my depth finder.

John - We have verizion cell phone service and have never had a problem out on the water. Coming down Route 624 into long level sometime we lose signal for a second but have never had any problems on the water!

Have fun out there!

After telling my son to call us when he get done work, I thought about the reception. He would get pretty pissed standing on the bank and we are anchored somewhere.
Thanks for the help.

John - Hope that you had a great time yesterday! How busy was the place? I try to avoid it on Holiday weekends now. Last year we went out on Labor Day and it was a total zoo. Hope it wasn't too bad for you and that you were able to enjoy it!

Denny - When we were out Friday night the water temperature on the surface was 74 - 75 degrees. Here is a link with good info for long level. On the left of the page is the "River Hotline" containing current river info. They claim the water temp is 74.39 degrees. Also, you can click on the link for Lake Clarke water levels to know that as well. I like to find out so I know how low the water will be at the ramps.

Re: Lower Susquehanna

Made it out about 4:30 yesterday. It wasn't busy. We stayed out until 7:00. Made my first stop at the sand bar. Sure is a cast of characters there.:) We anchored, ate supper and enjoyed the sights.;) Then took a trip up towards the islands. Found my first rocks.:( I discovered that fish finder was staying in Simlulator mode. I thought i was in 20 ft. water and once I set it correctly I was in 5ft. Another lesson learned.

yep it get real rocky up by those 3 islands...I stay away from there. I learned my lesson in that area also, and my depth finder WAS workin:eek: There is alot of submerged tress and crap in that area even in the deeper parts.

Yep there is some characters at the sand bar but you have to admit it is entertaining.

We're headed down to Conowingo tomorrow where my uncle's cottage is. The boat ramp we use there isn't the best but it's never busy.

Anyone else like to sit and watch the eagles flying around?

We sit down around Turkey Point (I think that is the name).

And I don't mean McNabb.:)
