I am considering restoring my newly bought 1990 capri at the end of summer. But the only work space I have is my one car garage at my townhouse. Is this realistic? I'm not sure whether the stringers or transom are rotted or not. This is my first boat and bought it on an inpulse. Got it for $800 with strong 70hp o/b yamaha. How much do you think a boat shop would reasonable charge just to do the stringers, cap removal, and transom if everything else was removed?

We're DIY'ers here! It's usually not worth the money to hire out the work on these old boats. I'd guess-ti-mate $2-3K and no guarantees on the quality of the work. A one car Garage would be tough! What symptoms does the boat have??

So far trim is inop. Will troubleshoot that this weekend. Other than that don't really know considering I was stupid and did no reasearch until after I bought it. I won't have it home and give it a good once over till this Friday. Also what fuel mixture do I use?

Depending on the year it might have oil injection, if not it will probably be 50:1 or 1 pint of outboard oil per 6 gals of fuel

Yes if you want to cut the cap and glass it together and do gel coat repair.....It has been done

I'm not saying I couldn't do this myself. I just have limited resources and very limited space. I am an aviation structural mechanic. I would just rather spend under $6000 for a solid boat than take the easy way out and drop over $15000.

Totally understand the space issue. What I worry about is finding a quality shop that will do a quality job for the price you pay. They are hard to find sometimes. If you get a lot of references, do your homework here on the forum so you'll know the right questions to ask and KNOW the answers before they give them, then you might be able to find someone to do the work for you if you don't mind paying for it. You're spot on that if you can rebuild her for 3-4K you'll be way ahead of the game as opposed to buying new. Just gotta make sure you get quality workmanship. Doing it yourself guarantees that.

I am totally with you there. I would love nothing more than to do this myself. I pride myself on providing quality workmanship and product. But if i do the stringers myself it should be marginally less expensive for just the transom right?

The issue is removing the Top Cap. Once it's off Stringers, Transom and Deck replacement is NOT that big a deal. YOU can do that in a one car garage. Well, maybe. Lots of GRINDING and DUST to capture and NOISE!!!! What you MIGHT want to consider is renting a Storage unit for a Month and doing the Demo Work there and then pulling the boat back home to do the assembly.

Remove it yes, reasonable price, Dunno??? Store it .... Doubtful. Trust me on this the Grinding and the dust created is Unbelievable. You would have to device a plastic tent to totally cover the boat so no dust could escape and then there's the noise. Grinders make a lot of it.

looks like if it comes down to it, after all the reading it probably will, that I'll do my own stringers and then have the transome done at the shop.

How much does a typical no frills paint job run?

If you can do the stringers you can do the transom.

Paint jobs depend on the Paint. Paint can run from $25 per qt to $100 per qt. Again most of us do our own painting if you have it done it could run from $500 to $1500.

I have alot of experience in working with fiberglass as well as composite materials. Like I said before, it's not that I am afraid to do it, it's that I don't have the facilities to remove the cap. If it weren't for that I would have no problem attempting this on my own, with a little help from iboats of coarse.
