Thanks. Nothing really photo worthy tonight either. The last bit of glass in the hull is done along with a fillet of super duper glass reinforced peanut butter along the bottom of the transom.

Also got the deck template cut out.

Leak test in the morning and then on to the deck, weather permitting.

Re: My restoration project. (Trailer Update)

Too tired to upload pics.

Leak test was successful.

Got the deck cut out. The fore section of the deck is bent and fits nicely. The bending jig was right on the money. The rest of the deck has its first seal coat of resin on it. It gets a second coat tomorrow.

I caught a screwup before it happened. It looks like the block of plywood that's glued and glassed to the center of the transom needs to be in before the deck is installed. The old one is exactly 1 1/2" thick. I glued up 3 pieces of plywood which measured exactly right. Tomorrow, I will cut that to size and glass it in.

Also it looks like I'm going to need another gallon of resin and some more cabosil.

When I do that much fiberglass work I use the 2 liter soda bottles and a razor blade..... I can make a nice disposable container to mix the resin in.

Sounds promising so far.

Whewee I'm sore from head to toe this morning. Here's the pics from yesterday. The forecast says scattered t-storms all day today so I don't know how much I can get done. I should clean up "the shop" if nothing else.

Man, you have vision! Great job

Thanks!

I went ahead and finished building this piece using the wood I glued up yesterday. I only have a Skil-Saw, jig saw, and hand saw. This was really tough to cut and took about 3.5 hours to do. I finally said to hell with the power tools and made the last cut with a hand saw. I think it turned out pretty well.

This piece has to "dovetail" with the cap so it's very critical that I glass it in properly. I'll have to put the cap back on to get the alignment before I glass it in. So the deck waits until this step is done.

Here's a few old and new shots. I used the old one to take measurements from. Using a sliding t bevel, I was able to to transfer all the angles and bevels. This would have been a lot easier (and faster) on a table saw or even a band saw, but sometimes you just have to work with what you have.

I'll try to get a seal coat on it later today so that's all for now.

Great job, I'm truely impressed! Gives me encouragement to start mine!

I just picked up a Hy-Ryder 14' tiller steer. Hull is solid, has a small flat deck that is also rotted and the transom is solid but delaminated so I'll have to fix that.
Question, my boat also has a riveted rub rail, how and what are you going to use to reattach it? Also anxious to see what you use for paint and how it turns out.

Good question about the rivets. The original ones were solid aluminum. I have never worked with these, nor do I have the tools to set them. I just happened to catch an episode of How It's Made last night. They were building an airplane and used those same rivets. Their rivet gun was pneumatic and basically just vibrated (think hammered with very small strokes). What they would do is put the rivet in the hole, then put the gun on the rivet head. While the gun was hammering the rivet head, they reached around with a block of steel (I think they call it a bucking bar) and held it to the end of the rivet shank. It made the rivet expand.

I think these types of rivets and tools are expensive. I'd like to use them but it'll probably cost too much. I'm sure there is something I can use that works with a standard pop rivet gun, but I don't know what yet.

They do make structural rivets that work the same as generic pop rivets with the exception of a portion of the shank remaining in the center of the rivet. One example that is fairly popular in the aviation sector is Cherry Q Rivets. I will try to add a link to a supplier. They come in lots of different styles, and if you were interested in using something that can work with standard pop rivet tools, but is a stronger than a standard hollow pop rivet check them out.

Thanks! The east coast Aircraft Spruce location is only about 45 mins from my house. In fact, at my former job, I had to go set up some network hardware for them.

Those should probably work fine. I already have a standard pop rivet tool. I just need to determine the correct size rivet.

Re: My restoration project. (Trailer Update)

I'm also reading some stuff about closed end pop rivets. I think I saw Bond-O (Ayuh...) mention them before. The mandrel snaps off inside the head which seals the rivet (no hole).

I'm probably making this more complicated than it is. It's just that I've never seen anything but the plain ol' pop rivets from the hardware store/Home Depot.

how much longer you think it will take you to finish and what will you call your boat?

I'd like to have her in the water before summer is over but I'm not sure. I'm not under any pressure to finish it at any certain time. I have another boat. I am putting just about every minute of my spare time into it, but there's a lot to do. Many details I don't even include in my posts.

I like to think of it as an extended beer drinking project coupled with a boat restoration diversion.

I'm not sure about the name yet.

Update: I have 2 coats of epoxy on the deck surfaces and the wood piece that goes on the transom. My next step is to glass in the wood piece. Now, when it's time to install the cap it's not a good time to discover that this piece of wood is not aligned properly. So here's what I have to do. Attach it to the cap (screw?) which is currently on saw horses. Then put the cap on the hull. Screw the wood piece to the transom and unscrew it from the cap. Finally remove the cap and glass in the wood piece. I can't think of any other way to be sure it's aligned properly. Once it's in I can lay the deck.

The next two weekends, I will not have both days to work on it. If I can somehow get this piece glassed in by Friday evening I'll be in pretty good shape for the deck.

Why is it, it seems older boats also require beer.
I can't find in the manual, what leaking reservoir, I keep pouring it in.

^^^:D

Quick update: Sorry, nothing noteworthy to photograph yet.

Just finished glassing the cap back together where I sawed it in half. It's stronger than ever. The deck is 95% ready to go in. I still have to glass that wood piece to the transom.

It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow.

It's supposed to be nice on Sunday, but I'm committed to do something else.

For the next 3 weekends I'm committed on Sat. and Sun. So my few hours in the evening is all I will have for a while.
