OMG that Merc wrap, it was insane, nothing took the paint off mine. Never have seen anything like it.

Thanks for the heads up. I sure hope that I don't have to call in an air strike to get if off there! :flame:

Well, the weather didn't cooperate today and we couldn't do any stripping. Too cool.

But we did get the Chieftain bow raised. Not only was the trailer jack buried in the sand, but the roller had snapped. (Poor, poor neglected Chief. :blue: )

Believe it or not, with only a couple of very minor exceptions, everything along this wall came out of, will go back into, or is related to the KF refurb.

Hey WM, how did you end up getting the paint off your Merc hood? Did you sandblast it? I don't remember.

Late this afternoon we hit the inside of the hull at the leak location with stripper and got it cleaned up enough for the Gluvit. The stripper worked very quickly there.

It's still shiny under there. Should I try to re-buck any of the rivets? I'm disinclined to do that out of concern that I might break others loose in the process or unseal the existing Gluvit. What say y'all?

It was close to dinner time and I didn't want to start a lengthy project so we just did a little testing on the other parts.

The engine hood just laughed at the aircraft stripper! I globbed it on just as I'd done on other pieces but it seemed to have zero effect. Sand blasting time?

Tested a small area on the cowling wrap and the stripper easily removed the paint there.

I also did a test section on the console and the stripper started loosening the paint in seconds. Good news. :)

At the end, I started peeling the stickers off the cowling with the aid of a heat gun. Tedious but easy enough. The stripper will take care of the remains of the glue.

After we finished for the evening, the BBT showed up with the Gluvit that I ordered last week. Temps are supposed to be close to 80 degrees tomorrow so hopefully I can get started on the re-seal.

Temps in the 80s . You guys down south have such an advantage over us frozen chosen up here in the Mitten. I don’t think I’d try to rebuck those rivets. I’d see if gluvit or some 5200 in the problem area fixes the leak. It would suck to have the aluminum crack there or have the other rivets loosened by it. Just my 2 cents.

I really doubt the double rows of rivets are loose mid ship more like the sealer material has the issue. Clean out that seam best you can and look closely for a void to open where that Gluvit can get down inside the seam. I liked the idea of using a syringe to apply gluvit to seams but I used the end of the brush bristles to force it in and drag the sagging material back up.

Agree with WM and MD. I'd try sealing the problem instead of potentially creating more.

Outboard is coming along nicely. Still love the bare look on your hull.

Didn't get anything done yesterday other than to reacquire the box of Mercury shifter stuff that I'd given to my bud to see if he could make one good one out of two bad ones. Didn't happen, so I bought a replacement 10 days ago. That new-to-me replacement shifter is missing the small button which disengages the throttle from the gears so that the engine can be brought to higher idle speeds without engaging the drive.

These are the "old" shifters. The little black square which I circled in red is the piece of "button" gold in the pic!

Today we got back down to bidness.

Worked my fingers to the bone!

Brought out the big gun to deal with that stubborn hood paint! I'd given that sandblaster to my buddy a decade ago. I asked to borrow it and he said to just keep it (again) because he never uses it. Okay then! I need to buy some fine walnut shells to use for blasting.

The boy got the stickers off the Merc cowling. The stripper should take care of the rest easily enough.

I let it work for the full 15 minutes than gave it a quick scrape. Works great!

The opposite for me, the motor cap was easy, paint fell right off but the wrap was crazy tough and it laughed at the stripper.

Funny how simple yet complex controls can be. Ive tore apart 2 before to replace cables, test elements and replace parts. Both evinrude and both a greasy mess that I was afraid I would end up with "extra" parts. Not that bad after you know what you're looking at.

Looks like you have all the stuff you need then just gotta add the button..

Stripping saga never ends I tell ya!! Continued progress and you'll get there!

It was all the wires wrapped around the center of the thing that caused the problems. My bud got it back together but it was very stiff to operate. He finally gave up and went back to working on his giant tractors. The small stuff is tough on him!

Fortunately, the replacement shifter I bought recently works just fine and all I have to do is replace that little square button and then swap the shift cables to the ones I have sitting in the garage. Hopefully, I'll be able to get all that done without much trouble. Once I do get it done, I'll sell off all the other shifter stuff. Hmmm... or maybe keep some critical components as backup? Hmmm... :noidea:

This is the replacement that I bought.

Let's talk about the STARCRAFT logo decals. I've been looking around online and have found beau coup offers but they're all "one way" in direction. Like the ones in the attached pic. So I'd have the port side logo facing in the opposite direction from the starboard side.

Anybody know where I can get a true left/right (port/starboard) set?

Or will I have to get them custom made?

Yeah the logo "should" be at the front of STARCRAFT on both sides. So you have 2 options:

You can't see both sides at once and only you will care.
The decals come on a single sheet yes... but you can cut the logo off the decal that has the logo on the wrong end and put it in front.

If I'm gonna spend money on this, I'm gonna be picky!

As a matter of fact, one buddy asked me the other day why I'm even bothering to repaint the Mercury outboard. My reply was simple... "If I'm going to go through all this effort to do a great job with a full restoration on the hull, why leave the motor looking butt ugly?"

Yup, I thought of cutting one sheet and moving the "split S" to the other end. But then the rake angle of the lettering will still be facing in the wrong direction.

I looked at old pix of this boat and the logos were indeed facing opposite directions from using uni-directional decals, including the "split S" being on the opposite end of the lettering.

But on my Chieftain, the "swoosh" and "split S" are left/right.
