I had a thought, and the pics of the scrubbies spurred it so maybe it's where you're going already.

If you have old hard grease on the hull, your stripper won't make contact with the paint. Seems like you've scrubbed it enough to cure that problem by now though.
Yeah, much of that section of the hull has been treated several times already, so it's not likely to have any grease on there.

This afternoon the boy and I went out and did a little more stripping work.

Since the scrubbies I ordered won't be here for another week, I experimented a little with one of the small ones I bought locally. It worked okay. It loaded up a bit with the goop and also scratched into the aluminum, leaving black streaks. But it definitely cleaned the paint off.

Making progress a little at a time. But I'll eventually get it done.

We tried using the hand sander to remove the old number leftovers. No joy. Then we hit it with Goof Off and finally Goo Gone. Still didn't work.

So we used the Jasco stripper, which obviously worked. We'll keep going.

The boy is going to either be in love with boats or hate them after all this is done

Good to see you moving forward.

When I stripped my hull, I went to harbor freight and bought a adjustable speed buffer and order a 4" stainless steel brush online..
For the really tough paint I would put a light coat of stripper on and set the buffer to a low speed and run the brush over the paint. It took it off very well. Just don't use a high speed or you'll have stripper all over the place..

I have an orbital buffer but it uses 7" pads. Is that the type you mean?

Got a little more stripping done on the bow section of the boat this afternoon. We went at it in a meticulous manner and that did help. Finally got the tough stuff done. Very, very slow though.

I tested with a nylon sanding wheel and a wire wheel. They badly scratched the hull and didn't do much to the paint.

Removing the paint really showed the gouges and scrapes on the boat, which is why I'm going to leave the bottom section bare. I don't want to put in a ton of effort painting this area only to have it dinged up during use.

I used Jasco stripper and these pads from Lowes, with the handle you can buy for them:

I gave the stripper 2-3 minutes to work but no longer or it would evaporate. I was doing it in summer temps, though. This method was pretty easy. Took about 3 applications of stripper to get all the way down to aluminum, but I barely had to scrub. Biggest issue is the pads clogging up. I was working outside so I could blast them with a garden hose as often as necessary.

Yeah, I ordered better scrubber pads and received them today. Sadly, they don't match the product description and may not be heavy-duty enough. They were the second product today that didn't match the description. :grumpy:

Here are the pics of the buffer and SS wire brush I usried.. You can control the speed to keep from slinging the remover every where..

Yup, that's like the one I tested the other day. It scratched up the aluminum of the hull more than I wanted to deal with, so I moved on.

Thank you for the support sir. I'll keep chipping away at this thing! The boat I mean. Is that right? ;) :joyous:

Had another relapse 9 days ago. I toughed it out for awhile (see my sig line) but it got worse and I'm back on the steroids. Starting to get under control now that I've quadrupled the dosage in the last 4 days. But I'm finally up to the dosage where the doc wanted me to start from in the first place. Silly me.

I used a pretty aggressive pad when taking off the paint but most of it came off with the PW blast. It might have scratched the surface some but take 2 steps back and it's better, flip it back over and it's gone.

Let there be work!

The outside temp got up to a whopping 70 degrees today and I'm pumped up on 'roids and painkillers, so we did a little more paint stripping! :D

We spent 3 hours working but were only able to make minor progress. Yet it is progress. Most of the time was waiting for the stripper to work.

There's an even colder snap rolling in and we're expecting highs in the 50s for the next week. That'll end any paint stripping for awhile. But it also means that I'll be able to get yard and home stuff done. :)

Tested the triangular scrubber sponge again. It actually worked okay. Not great, but okay.

However, the freebie brass bristle brush from HF worked GREAT! It tore through the old paint like nobody's business but without leaving aggressive scratching like the stainless brushes did. VERY HAPPY with the results!
