Re: I have another boat in my sights. UPDATE 12-11-2010 New pictures.

Looks, to me, like an old oil leak. Could also be old oil left there from a sloppy, careless oil change. Motor placement on some boats makes it so difficult to access the oil filter, that the owner will put rags under and around the oil filter and just let the oil dump; and then clean it up. I've known a couple of people over the years who did this. One of them didn't even use rags or clean it up. He pulled the plug and let it rinse/drain into the bay:confused::mad:. No, he was not my friend, nor did I like him or even associate with him. He, unfortunately, occupied the slip next to one of my dive buddies in New York. Anyway, the oil theory is only one possibility. It could be your best case scenario, or could even be something more minor than that. Have you even asked the seller for an explanation? You didn't mention whether or not you did... Whatever it is, though, you need to really check carefully for transom rot around the outdrive where that ominous staining is going on. Question the seller about these things and let us know what he tells you. Best of luck.

Safe and happy boating always!!!

Don't worry about the stain. Mine gets that too from the water/exhaust coming out of the outdrive. Totally normal.

The bilge just looks dirty. Again, not much to worry about. Its not from an oil change unless the guy really doesn't know what he is doing since on a Volvo you pump the oil out of the dipstick and it probably has a remote oil filter although I don't see it in the picture.

Cobalts are the Cadillac of boats. Four-winds are like a Lincoln . I have trouble paying what a Cobalt is worth due to the fact that a Lincoln is all I need.

Unless it was done recently you will want to do a tune up, drive refresh anyway. Add that into the cost of the boat.
It's Four Winns and Four Winns are considered a mid quality boat. By calling them a Lincoln makes them sound similar in quality to a Cobalt.

What do you consider a "drive refresh"?

Thanks for the info guys. Here is another twist. Right after I posted this a guy called me that I have been after for about three days now. He has a 24ft mariah for sale. The deal he had fell through due to finances and he called me back. The boat is more than we wanted to spend, but has a 7.4 liter and a bravo one. Nice combo if you asked me. The boat looks really nice in the pictures, but we will see when I get there.

The model is a 94 240 z bowrider. From what I have read they were pretty good boats back in the mid 90s.

I will let you guys know what I find tomorrow.

The bilge slime looks like an oil leak that has not been addressed. The stain could be tannins bleeding out from the transom if the wood behind the drive is rotting. That is what it looks like to me. I would think it would be more spread out if it was from exhaust.

Drive refresh=pull drive, replace rubber parts, inspect or replace gimbal and ujoints, vacuum test drive and change oil. Reinstall with fresh gaskets. Yea it is supposed to be done yearly but most don't until they sink or experience other troubles.

I went out today to look at the 1993 Mariah z240. I thought this was going to be an easy decision based on the pictures. I was wrong. It needs some interior work, and it has been sitting in a slip all summer. The Bravo Drive was filthy, and had a chunk missing out of the Anti cavitation plate plate. The mechanicals were fine and the deck was solid. I just could not see past all the slim and holes in the interior. It seemed WELL used. But is just had so much space.

How much is a typical interior recovering?

Now I am back to the Four Winns. My wife LOVES this boat. I just want to make sure we are getting more space from the glastron. It feels soooooo much bigger inside than my boat, and it has creature comforts. If I could find a good 22' Four winns I would be set.

Here are some pictures of the Mariah.

Not sure about the hours, as there was no meter. He said he put a new engine in it around 2001,and the outdrive had a sticker on it that it had been rebuilt. The price was $6000.00.

Ok, the only other tear I saw was near the throttle control this is bad because its in a green section of the panel which means its likely you will have to have at the least both sides replaced in order to make sure you can match colors, the white is not a big deal. In a nut shell I think your wife made the decision for you, she loves it and the price pretty good I would get a compression check on the motor and test drive it, I would offer $5000 and go from there if you can get it for $5500 and it checks out mechanically I think your good to go and at a pretty good price. When you go to seal the deal leave your wife at home or bring duct tape(ask me how I know)

The pictures do not show the bow section. All of the seams are ripped and so is the bench seat in the back.

I really do not know much about the 7.4 and the bravo either. A bit expensive to replace if needed.

oof... so your looking at a total interior then for the most part correct? Sounds like your not liking this last boat.....tough deal man, not sure where to go with this, I don't like the stains on the previous boat, no that they are a deal killer but they make you wonder, this boat has a ton of work AND the boat is a relist I am betting that you know why now and the Cobalt isn't looking good either, maybe its time to sit back and think things over a bit and see what transpires for a week or three?

Its exhaust.

Ya, it could be exhaust or it could be rot. it is a 13 year old boat, transom rot is not out of the question. I would make pretty sure either way or it could be a transom redo, which as you know, is not fun. I would take a look on the inside of the transom if you can down by the bottom of the outdrive key hole to see if this staining is occurring on the inside as well. Is this a fresh water or SW boat.

Re: I have another boat in my sights. UPDATE 12-11-2010 New pictures.

It has been in Possum kingdom and the Brazos River area since new. The River can be quite rusty colored at times. If you look close you can see the wipe marks where it looks to have been all over the transom, I bet the whole bottom looked that way before cleaning, and the detail guy got lazy. I think we are going to start really negotiating on this one and just add a swim platform on the back for some extra length.

Does anyone know how much a fancy swim platform would be?

I agree...tramsom rot is not out of the question but it is not the reason for that stain. Almost every boat I have ever owned gets that stain.

I don't know off hand I am guessing $2000 or so made to match your boat, I do know a company that makes them and they come highly recommended. If my children were younger I would most likely have one on my boat but since I have only one child left at home I don't need one. PM me if your interested in the Manufacturer's name I know they are pretty quick to quote by email as well.
