Hey oops!, you never said if there was any work going on when you went over Sat. afternoon.
Had FROST here the last 2 mornings, it's not burning off until around 9:30-10:00, working outside really SUCKS!

Last big weekend of the year. He's probably spent it on the lake not working on the boat. Or he's in the pokey for beatin a guy with a longboard. ;)

I've been following this thread since I joined a couple months ago. Lots of great info. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ive been spending hours long boarding the boat and re fairing it....the plaining surface is done and ive been consentrating on the sides.......

the gellcoat is sanding really easily...but its still a whole lot of work...

this is the post side getting prepped for a final third longboarding session

gellcoatingset3001.jpg

the nose also needs attention

gellcoatingset3002.jpg

with the exception of the chine and strake area....the starboard side is done

gellcoatingset3003.jpg

after i longboarded the whole port side....(about 6 hours worth) it still has some issues........it took me a long time to figgure out....the cheap long boards i got from princess auto had warps in them. i wasnt using my good board because it was a hook and loop system and the only paper i could get was sticky.......so i had to dun out and pay thru the nose to get hook and loop long board paper

you can see the warp in the board after i tried to fix this one

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the long board was creating ripples in the hull sides.....it was really frustrating.....after i got my good board rigged up with 220 paper the ripples started to come out.

its really tough to find the higher grits of paper in the sizes im looking for....no one carries the 400 to 1200 grits in long board or 8 inch round sizes !

so i dont know what to do when it comes polishing time.

the transom was much neglected because i was concentrating on the major areas....so i prepped it and went after it.....this is half way done on the first series of longboarding

gellcoatingset3006.jpg

after it was done....i found some really high spots.

gellcoatingset3010.jpg

i sanded then down to "dish" depth.......the one in the middle is really in a bad area because it is right where the transom cut out will be....that means a perfect seal will be impossible to get when the transom plate is bolted on....

it needs to be perfect.

i mixed up some gellcoat and using ondarvrs trick......poured the gellcoat on the area....and just squeegeed over the dished out areas

gellcoatingset3013.jpg

done in seconds !....flat....smooth...and perfect !

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

while that was curing.....i started on the nose

gellcoatingset3008.jpg

im using a one inch hard rubber sanding block for the area between the chine and strake transisitions

gellcoatingset3009.jpg

in the above pics you can see where they started to go thru the gellcoat.

in order to get this area flat when it gets re gellcoated i needed to take lots off.....but she is starting to look really and feel really good

gellcoatingset3012.jpg

as previously stated, this side still has issues near the cap joint

gellcoatingset3014.jpg

its impossible to see how straight this is looking...but here is an over all shot

gellcoatingset3003.jpg

optical illusion plays lousy tricks on you but it looks and feels good. just a few minor wobbles.....

gellcoatingset3007.jpg

i have to go to vancouver tommorow morning, but gellcoat is set for friday night !

today im going to go and putz with the boat...make it as straight as i can before the gellcoat hits it....but i really think its ognna be a good product when its done........better than it was before.

cheers

Can't seem to find the post referring to the "gel coat and Squeegee trick". Would it be too much trouble for you too repeat that post again?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the squeege trick is really easy.....when doing a flat area with gellcoat....(after the surface is prepped) just pour on some gellcoat and use a squgee to move the gleecoat around......it will fill any bubbled or low spots or fix any surface imperfections......and leave you with a totally smooth surface.....

if a person could match gellcoat colors easily....the trick could be used to quickly fix pitted or rock chipped areas on gellcoat

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Not sure what your final finish is heading for like gelcoat or paint, but there are a couple of other products out there that are used for sufacing and filling. One is called featherfill and is a sprayable product that dries quickly and is an mek actaylst, the other (if you are going to paint the boat with something like awl grip) is awl grip D008 epoxy primer, its a high build easy sanding primer for use under polyurathane topcoats, 24 hour dry time.
