Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the last pic i put up was of the shifter being put into place.....wow....that was a long time ago !

lots has been done....the sad part is.....you cant tell !....lol.

here is the boat about a month ago.

asembly-shifter-rigging029.jpg

its time to get to the instlation.....so the transom sheild was finally installed.

asembly-shifter-rigging004.jpg

at this point....the trim sensors are still not in place. but i was glad to start to re assemble the boat......note the steering ram is not there.

asembly-shifter-rigging012.jpg

the outer gimbal housing was finally permanently installed.

the candidate motor is a 350 chevy that i had professionally built for my cube van.....
it is a LT 1 vette motor....4 bolt mains....rv cam...either 8.5 or 9.5-1 pistons (i forget ) it was built to drive up a huge mountain between here and vancouver at 100 kms per hr...(60 miles an hour) fully loaded......it did it...

it was running about 310 hp.....with the addition of a big holly carb and a hi rise manifold.....im guessing 320 hp now

asembly-shifter-rigging015.jpg

its still kinda dusty.....but it will all get cleaned shortly.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

one of my pet peeves is tripping over fishing rods....in the walk way and digging them out of the gunwhales...they can be a real pita.
\
i had allways planned to make a special storage compartment just for the rods...

i got the tools out......

asembly-shifter-rigging017.jpg

after a few quick cuts.....

asembly-shifter-rigging019.jpg

these peices of wood will go under the gunwhales and will be glassed to the insides of the hull and joined to the underside of the cap.

here you get the idea....

asembly-shifter-rigging020.jpg

o
this area marked in red....is the approximate planned opening

asembly-shifter-rigging021.jpg

one thing i want to point out is.....in the lower corner of the pic you will see a really bad fairing job....in fact....it was barely touched...!

truth is....i was so sick of fairing ....i just went over it quick with the sander before paint....this area is in the motor area and wont be seen !

asembly-shifter-rigging019.jpg

after a full year in the sanding process....i had had enough !

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

a little while ago i had mentioned i had cut the holes for the big gauges too big...

asembly-shifter001.jpg

i made a template and over laid a piece of black plexi

asembly-shifter-rigging047.jpg

in order to run the ships wiring..i wanted a seperate pipe to hold all the cables and wires......4 inch plastic pipe was chosen....

asembly-shifter-rigging048.jpg

this pipe will attatch to the underside of the glassed in wood for the rod holders.

the ships wiring was started !

asembly-shifter-rigging006.jpg

the tube will also hold the fuel line and heater hoses.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i made mention to murphy showing up.......the jerk !...
over the past few weeks we have been trying to get the boat over to the hoist side of the room.....but there was allways another boat coming in for somthing.....finally we had a window of time to install the motor !

we quickly jumped in and installed the steering ram....

asembly-shifter-rigging038.jpg

the boat was moved to the other side of the shop and a hoist chain was attached to the motor

asembly-shifter-rigging039.jpg

it was allmost time for the lift !

asembly-shifter-rigging040.jpg

it was kinda surreal seeing the motor in the air ready to be installed. !

asembly-shifter-rigging041.jpg

we had to push and pull the boat around a bit to get it in positioned

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

we finally thought we got it in the right spot and lowered it in the boat.....greg the mechanic (pictured here) jumped in and dropped in the two bolts thet hold the motor to the transom plate.....

asembly-shifter-rigging043.jpg

right here is where murphy decided to pay us a visit !

we had decided to re lift the motor and re posisiton the motor as the alignment was just a tad bit off......we lifted the motor up a bit.....and we heard a kind of a loud bang...!
about a second later we were in the dark !
a transformer had blown in the neighbor hood and all was dark !

lucky we had a gen set there....

asembly-shifter-rigging045.jpg

with minimal light.....we lowered the motor back into the boat.....closed the door for the night.....and went for a beer !

next update ill bring you up to speed on where we are now.

cheers guys.....thanks for hanging in there ~

what are your plans to turn that into a true marine engine? don't they need some differemt access. like alt, starter...

Have you considered how rough the ride will be in that thing as far forward as you will be sitting?

it has been marinized...everything has been changed to marine.....the cam.....is an rv cam......very similar to marine.

for the people that want to know what makes a motor marine, basically anything that holds fuer or causes a spark is changed........starter, fuel pump, distributer, alternator, carburetor and the air filter is a special spark arrestor.

the cam is a higher lift, longer duration...rv and marine are allmost identical.

there is lots of weight up front....i dont expect it to be any different than any other 24 footer....besides...we are on a lake here and mostly calm waters
