Hey guys! Just wondering how to keep my teak looking this good! I am wondering how cruise ships do it. I dont want to oil it i want to keep it looking good so i have that teak smell. Do you know how cruiseships keep it from being oily on your feet, yet keeps it looking new???

I'm not sure how the cruise ships do it but in the U.S. Navy, specifically on the USS New Jersey (BB-62), we used a holey stone. Its a pumice brick that you work a hole into with a mop handle hence the name holey. You put the end of the mop handle in the hole and you push the stone accross the deck with the grain.

As for keeping it looking good, we used teak oil on the deck but we weren't supposed to use anything. Spar Varnish was used on the trim work and it was completly sanded each time. The one trick we learned was to use the Varnish sparingly because it doesn't last any longer if you load it up and it takes a lot more effort to get back the original look. Two even coats is all you ever want to apply.

Yep. They use solid vinyl imitation teak.

Penofin oil. It penetrates the wood and hardens IN the wood, so you get that natural wood look, but it's protected. Rub in in and rub off the excess and you are done.

Ok! well we got the dash finished and now that will allow me to fully hook up and rigg my motors tonight! We were waiting as long as we could to give me time to build the dash, we Marcus and master carpenter Chris worked till 1 AM lastnight fabricating the dash and the teak rod holders that go in the gunnels of the boat. This is how they turned out.

Hey, the boat is lookin' awesome! I've been following your project from day 1. Where are you putting it in the water? I notice you're downriver; I just finished a 2 year full gut resto of a 30' cruiser and am keeping it at Wyandotte Yacht Club, maybe i'll see you out on the water.

I'm going to post all the pics soon in the finished projects section.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

well, yesterday was SLOW, you know i got home at 6 and we could only work on it till 8 and i had everyone doing everything and i was trying to orush it and it becmae a useless night, no one got anything really 100 precent done and it was furstrating.
I need to slow down and focus on 1 item at a time. Tonight we will continue to work on wireing and thru hull items. We have 3 days till launch, so hopfully we will make it!

Rob- im over on Grosse Ile, ya youll deffinitly see me out there! I live right accrost from the Cross Dykes

Jserb...if you miss the deadline, so what. Now is the time that all the details start to count. You don't want to find yourself rushing into something you do wrong and then spend days working your way out of it. Lots of folks here are following your project, and I dont think anyone wants to see you get yourself in a bad way because you hurried too much at the end. Take it easy, keep up a comfortable pace and continue to show us your progress. So far you have done a first class job. The gauges, starboard work and all done lately look super!

PS Congratulations on a GREAT name for your rig.....:D

I agree. Take your time at this point. Your deadline appears to be very arbitary.

You REALLY don't want to rush the wiring and rigging part of your rebuild. Heck, you could easily end up with several days to a week of troubleshooting some small problem.

We need more pictures and an update!!!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Been following this thread since it started and I agree, now isn't the time to hurry, if you miss your launch date big deal do what needs done and make sure it is right, I would hate see pics of your burning boat cause you hurried through the wiring.

Also I can't imagine trying to get that back on the trailer if it didn't run adn as Titanium pointed out, to expect a project this big to not have any bugs is alot to ask.

Name is perfect, looks incredible, outstanding job.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

I read through this entire thread, and all's I can say is good job. Theres nothing as good as bringing something back to live. As for your budget, you spent 8,000 restoring the boat, not repowering it all depend on how you look at it. My only words will be DONT RUSH THE ELECTRICAL, looking great, hope you add some pics soon.

Man am i a lier or what?!? I told all of you 1, it would be in on Sunday, and 2, id have TONS of photos to post Sunday! NEITHER HAPPEND!!!!!!

To give you all an update, things just wernt feeling right this past weekend, we were under the gun, lots of pressure and i was trying to not rush anything, long story short early saturday morning i made the call that we would slow down and take our time over the weekend and get it more ready for THIS SATURDAY!!!. So the boat did NOT go in. Now as for why i didnt post photos, well i took Monday and Tuesday off work to work on here, unfortunitly it rained all day yesterday so progress was slow, BUT dwe did get things done, and YES i took more photo's, so if you really think about it it is like my "Monday" right now, which is when i usually post all my photos; the day after i complete all the work, SO GET OFF MY BACK...hahahhahaha!!

So here weeeeee Go!
Notice the scarab sport name missing?>We are going to replace it, they are in the dinning room right now
