Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Does anyone know what voltage readings I should get at the guage plug end? I plugged a 1 resistor harness to the can plug at the motor and plugged that into a 4 way junction box. I plugged a resistor into one of the junction box outlets and a weather cap into another. I plugged the guage harness into the last outlet and the ground wire to the electrical panel ground. I plugged in the system monitor guage and turned the ignition key and nothing happened. I checked the voltage at the guage plug and one of the pins has 12 volts. Is it the guage?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Looking at the connector with the fastener edge up. The bottom right pin has battery voltage the bottom left and next pin in have 2 volts and 3 volts. I get no other voltage readings. Are these correct? If so do you think the guage may be the problem?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

HI, I just upgraded my 2003 pontoon to a 2008 60hp 4 stroke bigfoot thinking about replacing my tach to a smartcraft tach,I have read all the post and my head is spinning. What do I need to get to install the smartcraft (harness, boxes, resistor, etc) also what will it show me? and can I hook up speedo harness to get speed. Is it worth for a 60 horse? I have a tach, water pressure gauge, fuel and volt meter and no room for anything else, ANY comments, info would help me

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hi Bri.

On the engine there should be a plug where you simply plug in the data harness. You will need the blue wire which has a terminator in both ends, this will plug into the 4 way smartcraft box, then you will have a harness from the box to each of your smartcrafts gauges (assuming you've gone for the RPM and Speed gauges and not the system monitor).

D.

Hmmmm, for that configuration you should use a blue harness with ONE yellow end (terminator resistor) and then have a terminator resistor plugged in to the box along with the leads for the gaugues. Obviously it will likely work the other way, but if you want to know how you SHOULD do it, now you do .... I have heard of people getting the system to work with missing terminator resistors, so I guess it isn't too critical!

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Here is a PM I recieved for a 2008 Merc 115 four stroke.

"Searched the net and found some information.
I went ahead and ordered a SC1000 tach and speedo
I have Humminbird Gps that will be connecting for speed.
I have room to add link gauges ,currently have temp gauge, are there any other sensors ready on engine that can be added.
Eng oil pressure,Eng oil temp are they worth adding or should I add water pressure sensor before these.
I do not have the digital trim or fuel hooked up
Thanks."

You have Engine oil pressure and temp already available for display!
Engine water pressure is not possible as far as I know, you may be confusing this for the Pitot pressure sensor, which is a system used to measure speed when the GPS signal has cutting out (ie). It is very easy to install. You would be very satisfied to connect a digital trim sensor and connect the fuel tank sensor to the system, it provides additional functionality that is well worth it.

{I may post this on the smartcraft thread}

Hello,

I have read your post again and maybe you are finding the system overwhelming instead of just being lazy and trying to get someone else to do the work!

For the easiest system you would need the following....

1) A blue smartcraft cable with two yellow ends.
2) Any one of these: System monitor gauge, system tachometer gauge, or a mercmonitor (highly recommend this one for you!!!!)

That's it!!! Plug the blue cable in to the port on the engine, plug the gauge in to the cable and turn power on!

if you wanted trim read out (which for the merc monitor it is crucial) you just need to replace the trim sender , super easy.

The systems get far more complicated from there, if you are curious, feel free to ask!

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I hooked up my Smartcraft Tach gauge up this weekend, I used a blue harness with a resistor on both ends, hooked one end to motor and the other end to gauge. What do I need to make the trim and water pressure (Pitot pressure) feature work?

Like I said, you need a digital trim sensor to install where your analog one is now. It is located under the power heard, just look for wires inder the engine cowling, there will only be wires for your trim pump and trim sensor.

You would need a digital pitot sensor, it connects inside your cowling near the back of your engine. You will have (black??) tubing that runs up from your leg (maybe capped off in your application??), this will have the water pressure signal from the pitot port (hole at the front of the torpedo housing (leg)). There will be a spot to plug in the sensor on your engine already, same with the digital trim sensor.

The "Smartcraft conversion kit", part number 889250K01, will allow you to get water pressure, tilt angle and pitot speed through the Smartcraft gauge. It's around $170.00 depending on where you purchase it

Sure on that part number? I looked up that number (889250K01) and it's for a 75 thru 115 hp. I have a 60hp 4 stroke. Maybe the trim and pressure might not work on a 60hp.

Like I have been saying..... you can't have water pressure on that engine! Only trim and pitot pressure (speed) can be added. Go to your local dealership and ask to buy a digital trim sensor off one of the mechanics, they will have them in their toolboxes.

Do you have a gps fishfinder on the boat??

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I decided to add the fuel/paddle/oil boat harness to my smartcraft system. I purchased the 859743T03 harness and got it all installed but when I went to plug it in to the engine (2005 115 Opti) I found that the harness has a six terminal plug and the engine has an 8 terminal plug. Do I have the wrong harness? Can I adapt it somehow without pulling it all back out?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Responding to my own question since I figured it out....

The 8 pin connector on the engine had a cap on it that is actually the mating connector with little rubber plugs in the wire openings. I popped the wires out of the 6 pin connector on the new harness and plugged them into the 8 pin and "Bob's your Uncle"! :D:D

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hi and thank for the informative thread. I have purchase a couple of 2002 150hp Optimax engines that came from a dual motor installation. I am going to use one of these engines on a 19'6" boat. I am confused as to how the 2 engines were originally connected to the Smartcraft speed and tacho gauges. I do know that they were connected as a non can installation (as per the color diagrams at the rear of the service manual) But blue can cables and a 4 way junction box were supplied. I cannot see how the blue can cables can be used or connected in a non can setup. Were these cables just thrown in as part of the deal? If I reinstall as a non can setup will I still get all of the functions in the gauges as a can setup?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello over there!

Just bought a Smartcraft tach on eBay. I wanted it for my 2009 Optimax 90 - mainly to get the troll control function, but also found the other options interesting. After contacting my local Mercury dealer for a fitting harness, he told me the gauge was too old for my engine.

Tach is Mercury No: 79-859067 V: 2.80 Date KW 26/01

After looking for answers on the Web, it seems my tach isn't the Smartcraft SC1000 System tach, but named just Smart Tach

Back side is white - not blue.

Connector on the tach is still the same format as the blue CAN harness.

Is it possible to use this version with my engine?

I would prefer to connect it directly to the engine, without any junction boxes and/or additional sensors or system link gauges.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

hi and thanks for all of the great info

I have 2005 Optimax 115hp and installed smartcraft tach and speedo
i also installed the pitot sensor kit with 881879a22 but i cant find anywhere
to plug in the 3 wire connector for the pitot sensor. talked to 3 different
merc dealers and Mercury support the instuctions show the cable plugging in
to a cable right next to the starter. I can't find it Merc support said the cable should be there. Anybody know if i need to buy another harness or is it just
hidden, All other function on Tach works fine

In the insruction it's section 12, cable A ( Engine harness pitot sensor connector)

Thanks

How to install a depth sensor

How to install a depth sensor

I have a Smarcraft Tachometer and a 84-879982 cable that should do the job. It's not installed yet. And just bought a depth sensor.

Two questions:

1. How do you interface the depth sensor

2. Are there any technical documents that accurately describes how the whole thing operates and communicates. I'm a qualified electronic design engineer and curious!

Thanks

Dave
