Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

No I think it would have to be the north american range (didn't know there were two standards!)

That aside, I take it I have the wire colours correct to connect to an analogue signal, whichever it is?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hi,
New to forum, very informative. I have a 2010 175pro xs, I purchased a sc1000 system monitor(square black/grey) on ebay and purchased a 879982t20 wiring harness from my dealer. From what I've read I may have the wrong harness. Will not have time to install til after Christmas. Thanks in advance for Any help. Johnny<><

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Have '07 275 verados / DTS / and smartcraft. Just replaced speedo with a Merc Monitor. However, under both NMEA0183 protocol with old Smartcraft speedo and now N2K for Merc Monitor I cannot get the system to display GPS speed and GPS time. Everything is connected correctly and system is designated to show GPS speed and GPS clock but speed reads ZERO. Since it didn't work with either protocol I'm wondering if it could be a harness or DTS version issue. The speed will flash briefly upon reset but then returns to zero. Other nav data is coming through - current lat/long and waypoint data. Just NO GPS speed or time - which I need to unlock the other functions.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Only thing I would suggest is going through the CAL menus and making sure the transition threshold is set to 0 (?) and it is set to only show GPS speed (pitot disabled).

I'm sure you have already but I would say just try it, you won't hurt anything. I have found there are TONS of part numbers for all of this stuff, so let us know if it worked!

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Peter,

I don't know if you still answer questions regarding this topic, but if you do i would be grateful if you could provide me with some advise.

I recently bought a 2000 Mercury Optimax 225 (Serial# OT164859). Motor is still to be mounted to the boat.

With the motor came the following new items, which were never used with this engine:
79-859020-1 speed gauge
79-859019 tach gauge
820386A67 speed gauge harness
820386A68 tach gauge harness
881171A14 remote control
And an older type remote control (probably the one that came with the motor in 2000) No readable serial#

P1020255.jpg

Connector on the new Remote control:
P1020254.jpg

P1020249.jpg

P1020248.jpg

Connecting-diagram provided with the SC-gauges:
P1020250.jpg

According to the diagram provided with the SC gauges, the SC gauges are only hooked up to the key switch harness. The connector on the tach gauge harness only fits the old (worn-out) remote control. A small round rubbery connector. Only one lead (gray) is goning to the SC gauges.
The connector on the new RC is square (see picture). From the remote control a thick harness hooks up in the motor by means of 14 to 8 pole adapter.
Having read al the info regarding the hooking up of SC-gauges in this topic i cannot image that is only a question of hooking up the SC-gauges to the key switch harness to have everything working. There must be more to it.

In your opinion, is it possile to get things going and what would it take. I think i will be needing a lot more hardware (harness(es); junction box(es) etc.) to make everything work.
I would be very thankfull if you could help me out.

Grtz.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I have just purchased a Mitch Craft with the 200hp Optimax Jet Pro drive (inboard). I have the sc1000 tach gauge and a smartcrafrt fuel gauge that all seem to work. Is ther a way to monitor the oil tank level. I also found a speedometer (plain speedometer with the smartcraft plugs on it on the center consol floor. It must have been taken out when they installed the new system in place of the old rectangular system (boat is a 2003) Can I plug that into the cable hanging off the fuel gauge or how do I get the separate speedometer to work. I have a GPS so it's not a real necessity to make it work but would like to do it.I don't have any documentation on the system but do have a service manual coming.

Hi Paul.

I have to say I am a bit confused..... Is the boat wired for smartcraft already? I suspect not? you do not seem to have a main harness yet that will connect your remote and gauges to the engine.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I have the smartcraft 1000 (I believe that's the nomenclature) that is installed and working. It's the Tach with the multifunction readouts. There is still a square readout on the consol but it's not plugged in as it was replaced with the newer system due to sunlight damaging the cover on the one that was originally installed in 03.

What I was wondering was could I just plug the speedometer only gauge in that I found laying in the boat. There is a matching plug off the old smart system independent fuel gauge. I also get a matched fuel level reading reading on the Smart system tach gauge but I like having the tank reading there all the time. I do have a paddle wheel on the transom

Also on the large oil tank (not on the engine) there is a pair of wires coming out of it. What are they for?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Ok, I'm back. I ended up getting a 2002 Optimax. I have these for cables: 84-879982A30, 84-359743A1, 84-859244A1 and another cable that has 8 pins in a round connector at one end and ignition switch on the other... no numbers on it. Along with a small round smartcraft gauge with a square face. Regular old analog tach. I want to get this gauge MERCURY 79-879946-K11 SC100 SYSTEM LINK BOAT GAUGE, and a new tach. Should I stick with the analog tach or go with something smartcraft? I also want to get a merc monitor in the future. I was trying to see the images from the manual earlier in this thread but they are too small.

Anyway, I'm not sure what I need to make this work. (if it can)

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello everyone. This is my first posting here although I've been on other forums for many years. I have a 2002 Rinker with twin 5.0 MPI and Smartcraft capability. For years I've been wanting to connect up. I finally bought everything I needed and am using a Northstar Explorer 557 as a display. I made my connections using two CAN buses with terminators on the engine end and a 6-way junction box on the other. I'm also using the dual gateway.

I got to do some playing today. I was able to get one engine at a time to work if I disconnected the CAN power on the other engine. I've done quite a bit of reading here on this topic the past year or two and some of it says to disconnect the CAN power on one engine if they both use the same bus, but mine each have their own bus up to the junction box behind the dash. Smartcraft material says to leave both power connected for that.

Each of my cables have the terminator in the cable, at the engine end. Nothing states I need a terminator type on the junction box, so I don't have it there.

Any suggestions? On the explorer unit itself when you set it to use Smartcraft it automatically sets it up as 1 engine. Not sure how to have it recognize it as two engines.

I will say some of the stuff seems like it's gonna be fun to play with over the summer! Just need to get the twin engine part working.

One last thing, for some reason when I click the Navbus option (to remove it), then it doesn't work at all. & this should not have any affect on it all.

Thanks in advance for your replies! This has been the best site out there for Smartcraft!

I am not sure if I fully understand what you are asking but the small speedo (system link gauge) is able to daisy chain with several system link gauges including the fuel gauge, you just link them together in series.

Is this an optimax?? this is the injection oil tank? if so you can connect these wires to the "tank 2" wires of the fuel/ oil/ paddle wheel harness. "tank 1" will be connected to your fuel tank. This will allow you to see the oil tank level from the gauges up front.

I honestly don't have time to verify all of these p/n's. I suspect the ign switch with the round plug is supposed to attach to the shift and throttle control box??? If you are running the harness from the engine to the helm I would just get either a system link tach or,much more functional, a SC1000 tach.

Hi there,

you need to have the engine computers programmed at a dealer. One needs to be PORT and one needs to be STARBOARD for that to work. I suspect that both are set to starboard or not set at all. From the factory they would not be programmed for dual engines. that is where I would start. Hope that helps.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hi. im new to this forum. and i have some Q about Smartcraft and cummins Mercruiser QSD 2.0 150hp.

1. I have asked around about troll controll function on the engine. Some say it will work ( with pcm 555) and some say that it will not work. What is the right answer?
2. i have my paddle/fueltank/oil harness figured out ( it even have more connections like pitot speed/steering and more) the one thing i need to figure out is the fueltank connection.
It's a 4 pin connector and my Wema fueltank sender has only 2 wires without connector just bare wires. Which cables do i connect them to? (Since there is 4 cables on the harness. i guess that is for 2 tanks?)
3. I cant find the NMEA blue and white cable. isnt that supossed to be on the harness between the junctionbox and gauge? I think i read somwhere that i have to get the speed gauge and the harness for that in order to get the NMEA cable on it. Is that correct?

kjuliussen, If you dont get an answer from rotorfixer (he may not notice the inquiry) drop a line to Don Weed in Greenville, South Carolina. He is a dealer and knows smartcraft. You can email him at info@europeanmarine.org or call across the world 864-421-0444. He is a very helpful person, and can probably tell you in just a minute what you need.

Hello, not sure what harness you have. The one I got had 4 bare wires, two for each tank. I believe they were labelled fuel1 and fuel2. I believ the nmea wires are supposed to be between the gauge and junct box, what gauge do you have?
