Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello,

Unfortunately you will need the gateway.... but to get the GPS info from the chartplotter to the smartcraft system you would not. (As long as it is NMEA 0183 compliant)

EDIT: the new merc monitor seems to convert output to NMEA 2000

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I am not thrilled at the recent activity in this thread.....

Our lake is half frozen and my boat is winterized. It is going to be a long winter.....

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I've got a pair of 2005 225 hp Optimaxs. I have the regular blue smartcraft cable going from motors to the jct box and gauges. I am not able to get trim levels on my gauges right now. I have been through the calibration protocals and still no reading on either motor.

Is there something that I have set wrong? Is there something I am missing?

I know there is another harness that does paddlewheel speedo, fuel, and oil levels. Does that harness also include trim level indicator function or do I have something configured wrong?

Thanks for any help you can pass along.

Hello,

"regular blue cables"? I assume they should have one yellow band on them (on one end).... Then have a terminator resistor in the j-box (completing the CAN BUS trunk).

Have you run these engines without the smartcraft system? did you have another trim indicator? I assume you have analog trim sendors, you need the digital ones. They are very easy to install!

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I bought the motors with 1 yr of service on them and I have no idea how they were previously set up.

Sounds right, the yellow band goes at the engine side. At my jct box I do not have a terminator resistor however... I think just a dust cap. Everything else seems to work fine... could that be part of the problem?

I was looking through the shop manual and see that I may be missing a small part called digital trim/fuel level/paddle wheel harness... it just does not have the rest of the harness that goes to the fuel, oil, and paddlewheel.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Are the engines DTS??? If so then I may be wrong about the terminator in the J-box... and I would assume they would still have the digital trim sensors from the factory (all optimax out boards come from the factory with digital trim sensors and are switched out for analog ones when the engine is installed, this is why most mechanics will have several in their toolboxes to give you if you ask nicely!)

Please take a picture of your trim sensors and the wires coming out of them! This way I should be able to tell you if that is the problem. (analog/ digital)

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

They are not DTS to my knowlege. I will take some pics when I get home on Thursday. Stand by...

Where abouts would I look for the trim sensor anyhow?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Thanks for the answer, Peter. :)

Do I need a specific designated Navman gateway for my Navman t/f 6500? From what I?ve been able to digg up some will not work with the 6500. If so were is a good place to order one?

Is it possible to mount a digital throttle and gearshift to my motor? Is that what DTS stands for? Digital Trottle and Shift.

Thanks again.

You can find it mounted in the swivel plate (??) The main bracket that your engine swivels on and rests on when it is fully trimmed down. You can find the sensor on that bracket, its kind of hidden but it is the only thing besides the trim pump down there that has wires!

Just to reiterate, I am just a guy that happens to own a boat with some smartcraft stuff, I am not a marine tech, just a guy who has figured some stuff out and is enjoying helping others with similar questions.

I am not too sure about the NAVMAN stuff, I will do some digging around the net and let you know if I find anything!

Your engine is either DTS or it is not, if it is, then smartcraft is not an option, it is required! No retrofit as far as I know, I would love to do that too!

18-10 Installation: SmartCraft
If the boat has one or two SmartCraft capable Mercury petrol/gasoline engines, connect the TRACKFISH to the SmartCraft engines with an optional SmartCraft gateway. The display unit can display engine data and trim and can control troll speed.
Note: Fit a single gateway for single engines and a dual gateway for dual engines. SmartCraft engines have fuel flow sensors, therefore Navman fuel sensors are not required as well. An optional GPS/fuel Y cable is required. If the fuel tank does not have SmartCraft level sensors, wire for auto power (see section 18-4).

http://www.navmanmarine.net/upload/Marine/Internet_Manuals/install/smartcraft_eng_web.pdf

I can't find any info on different gateways, except single or dual. Looks like you just need the gateway and the Y cable! I found some of each on ebay as well.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

OK, I got some pics... Here we go. I've got a few questions. I'd love some answers!

Pic #1. The trim sensor... What is it? Digital or Analog?
smartcraft4.jpg

Pic #2. The trim sensor wires. Look to be yellow, blue, & black. They are not plugged into anything nor can I find anyplace to plug them.
smartcraft5.jpg

Pic #3. My finger is pointing to the plug that my Smartcraft cable is plugged into. To the left is a 3 conductor plug (The manual lists the 3 conductor plug as Boat Harness - Oil, Fuel, Speedo. Looks to come off the plug that the Smartcraft cable is plugged into and then plugs to something else... Funny thing is that on my port motor it was unplugged). Further to the left is a 8 conductor plug that the manual lists as SC5000 Data Harness. The 3 conductor speaks for itself... But is the SC5000 Data Harness something I should have hooked up? Or is for shop-type usage? Or even something else?
smartcraft11.jpg

Pic #4 & Pic #5. The two previosly mentioned plugs...

Continued from above...

Pic #6. Here is one end of the capped 3 conductor plug on my Port motor. I found the other end and plugged it in. Doubt it will make any difference.
smartcraft14.jpg

Pic #7, #8, #9, & #10. This is up by the ECM. I found this interesting and would like help because each motor is different here. This pic is my port motor. Coming out this plug is a Brn/wht and Gry wire. They go downwards and the Brn/wht connects to a like wire, but the Gry is unconnected. The manual lists this as Digital Diagnostic Terminal Connector. Reason I bring this up is that on my Stbd motor the little harness that has the Brn/wht and Gry wires does not exist. There is just a cap on that plug. See pics below...

Unconnected Brn/wht wire downwards on Stbd motor.

Last Pic #11... What does this gray tube go to?
smartcraft13.jpg

Last question. Whats CAN and Non CAN? Difference

Let me look at mine at home, yours is different than on my 150, but the key will be the wiring!

Pic #2. The trim sensor wires. Look to be yellow, blue, & black. They are not plugged into anything nor can I find anyplace to plug them.
Well, that would be an issue, lol. Again let me look at mine and I will let you know if it is analog/ digital.

It is "fuel, oil, PADDLEWHEEL" not speedo, that is for connecting your fuel tank(s) , your remote oil tank (s) and the paddle wheel sensor if you have one. You should only have ONE connected between the two motors as far as I know. The harness should have 2 fuel tank connections and 2 oil tank connections. SC5000 harness? that should just be a can bus harness?? SC5000 is a display panel, just uses the normal harnesses. I would not worry about it.

Do you have your fuel tanks working on the smartcraft ???

Did you turn on the system ?? was there any difference?? Have to ask the obvious... did you go into CAL 1 and CAL2 to make sure that the trim sensors are ON and CALIBRATED???

Dunno ..... I will look at mine...

I am going to guess that might be the water pick up tube for your pitot port in your lower unit. To connect to either a water speed gauge at the helm or to a digital sensor at the engine. Do you have speed (pitot not GPS)working on the smartcraft speedometer???

Last question. Whats CAN and Non CAN? Difference[/QUOTE]

"Controller?area network (CAN or CAN-bus) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other within a vehicle without a host computer."

That is just refuring to the smartcraft network

The harness you are talking about is FUEL/ OIL/ PADDLEWHEEL, not trim, the trim should connect to either your engine, or have wires unconnected that were going to an analog stand-alone gauge.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I was referred to a guy named Don at European Marine in SC. He looked up my serial numbers and determined that I needed a Digital Adapter Harness (part # 84-859244T1) to hook the trim and pitot up. I also ordered the Fuel, Oil, Paddle harness that will plug directly into the harnesses in my motors (part # 859743T2).

Apparantly there are a few different part #'s for these fuel, oil, paddles harnesses. Each has slightly different plugging due to minor changes in the Optimax harnesses each year.

I'll post results when these parts are installed.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I found some time this afternoon to put in the harness for each motor that I was missing and then take a ride. Each motor was missing the following part, # 84-859244T1. This harness has a 8-pin plug that went to a plug cming off of the main motor harness, a plug that went to the pitot sensor, leads for the trim sensor, and a 6 pin that goes to the fuel level, oil level, and paddlewheel harness (which I will eventually install).

Once I got it plugged in and coiled up in a nice safe place the trim function worked. I had to calibrate each motor... No big deal. My trim sender on the port motor is on the fritz however. It reads very erradic. Even when the motor is not moving it changes readings. I checked the contacts on the leads and that's OK. So I guess I need to grab a new trim sender off of ebay.

I was able to properly configure my Smartcraft gauges to get the speedometer working finally as well. I had it reading pitot, but decided on GPS in the end. So now that the trim reading and speedometer are working I just have to get the oil tank and fuel tank hooked up and the Smartcraft is fully functional. Just getting the speedometer reading gave me some readouts that I have never been able to enjoy... mainly fuel milage and range type numbers.

Here's some readouts from my ride today. Sorry, I did not get a pic of the harness installed this afternoon. I'll try to do that later this week when I get the cowlings back off the motors in the daylight.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Let me first say that I have enjoyed reading through this post. But I must say that I am still confused.
I have a 2004 Optimax 200 S# OT921325 and just bought the smartcraft kit I think sc1000 with a harness 84-879982T20.
I feel I am missing data and would like to share a few pictures for your thoughts and advice.
The first picture is where I plugged in the smartcraft harness. The other pictures are things I saw in the same area that I have questions of.
What I would like to know is what need to do to get the most use and data out of these guages?
