Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Thanks for the reply. Yeah i'm sure we bit off a little more then we can chew on this one. What's funny about this whole cable adapter thing is merc was the ones that gave us them, lol... WE have some junk boats that used the older cables, i think i'm just going to pull them off and re-run them on the new boat. If you happen to still find a dighram with the pin layout on those cables it would be much help then i would just make the additional connectors that are needed. Thanks again.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

i really did try NOT to bother you with more questins regarding smartcraft installation! however, after calling Mercury I'm more confused than ever. i have a 2006 optimax 150, serial number 1B349982,and all i want to do is install the smarttach. i got a part number of 79-889222k24 from the merc folks. but then she wanted to get me a junction box, three way key switch and so on. i just need the correct part number for the plug and play harness, no? from reading this i believe that part number to be 879982t20. can i get you to verify?
thanks

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Read the whole post and confirmed everything i had learned elsewhere, wish i had started here. Just finshed installing a 2006 225 Optimax DTS i bought at a GSA auction. At the time of bidding I did not have a clue what DTS even meant, 2 weeks later i know more than some mercury dealers. Has been a learning experience with 12 ebay auctions later and a trip to a mechanic to program the CMD, 1 of the 3 motors I bought runs perfect.

Actually I can help bob out there, CDM modules go with the engine, anythime you switch them (or buy a new one) they have to be recalibrated. have been told a DDT will not do it must have the full computer. Must set engine locatation in the ECM before calibratation

I have 2 - 2006 optimax dts for sale if any one is interested

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

rotorfixer, Could you make a suggestion on what smartcraft I should go with?
I would like to get the fuel info and the alarm info.
I am not sure about needing the padle wheel sensor. I would like to get sea water temp, But I am going to install a charter sonar combo. So I could get the temp and depth from that unit.
Could smartcraft and fishfinder use the same transducer?
Would you know what type of sensors are on my motor analog/digital.
20076.2 bravo 3. As related to trim and pitot tube?

Some info about the dash on my boat, 2007 rinker 246cc. The speedo is much larger than the tach= tach only install?
There is a small depth sounder in the dash= remove and ad system monitor?
hopefuly you can make some sence of this. Thanks in advance, Eric

SORRY GUYS !!!! I DID NOT KNOW THERE WERE NEW POSTS IN HERE!!!

You are correct in thinking that you only need a direct harness to run ONLY the tach, that p/n would be for a 20' tach to smartcraft connector harness (gauge direct to engine) this also allows for link gauge connections down the road..... hope this still helps you.

Hello, I can't find the smartcraft FAQ page on the merc website for some reason, but it just has to meet the resistance requirements (like 0- 30 ohms or somthing full to empty) just try it out, you cant hurt it, and make sure that the sending unit is properly grounded to the hull! you can get new ones from people like WEMA, just google thier website. Let me know if you need any other help!

Hello,

It really depends on if you want to be able to expand the system down the road (if you can afford to play with these things I will tell you right now once you start you will want to expand!) and how much info you are looking for. The system monitor has some great basic info but the best info is found with the tach and speedo configuration (or system view SC5000). each one is better than the previous as far as diagnostic info is concearned. My SC5000 display will tell me exactly which direct inject has stopped working (1-6) and what condition it is in (open/ short). Where as with the system monitor or tach you get "a direct injector has stopped working electrically".

Your chrartplotter will be a great source for depth and temp readings, the only advantage with the paddlewheel is "troll controll" if your engine is capable of that. I am not very knowledgeable on inboards and I don't claim to be very knowledgeable on outboards either, I just know some stuff on this topic!

You can share the GPS NMEA 0183 signal, but not the depth signal as far as I have tested, and I have not seen that posted anywhere, but depth on the smartcraft is pretty useless anyways, sharing GPS is fantastic, it unlocks more fuel management screens.

I do not know, but I assume you have analog trim and pitot sensors on your engine right now, both of which would be very easy to switch to digital! Talk to a mechanic at your dealership to find out for sure.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Rotorfixier, Thanks for getting back to us.:D I have done some more research since my post. I still do not know what I need as far as the paddle wheel but have you heard of "Mercmonitor"? It is cool and I want one. http://blogs.mercurymarine.com/messenger/

This is definitly the way to go for me. Thanks again, Eric

Well, would you look at that! That looks pretty cool, an updated version of the system monitor, looks great! I am positive you will use the same harnesses that I have described for the system monitor.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hi Peter,
It looks like you have been helping out with mostly outboard installations. What about a 2006 4.3 MPI mercruiser I/O. It has all anolog guages (I guess) and as far as I know would need to be wired for the Smartcraft. I am looking at how to install the SC1000 Tach and/or speedometer. Als is this able to connect to my Lowrance Sonar/GPS? It runs on the NMEA 2000 network.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello,

Yes, I have been helping with mostly outboards, but they are wired in the same fashion. So, main harness to junction box then your one or two SC1000 gauges plug into the junction box. All of the info you need is in this thread. As far as p/n's for the SC1000's, you would have to verify if they are the same for the O/B's.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Thanks, I just realized this was an outboard thread. I found it doing a search on Smartcraft. I have looked at my existing wiring and cannot figure out where the harness would plug in. Do I keep my existing harness and smaller guages or will this require replacing the original wiring harness? I cannot find a plug that says CAN anywhere.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I'm not too sure if you read through the whole thing, there have been several people on here asking about inboards. Also described in here is the yellow cap you are looking for and it says TERMINATOR not CAN. There is also information on identifying if you have the latest analog/ digital harness in which case you need to make connections near the helm.

Have a good read through this thread and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I've read the entire thread. I still can't find the connection for the harness at the back of the motor. I have attached pictures of the instrument plug attachment, the ecm plugs and a picture from under the helm. What do you think? I have seen the post of the harness with the plug under the helm, maybe this one is similar? I have tracker part numbers for the wiring harnesses, would that be a route to find out where to connect? Mercury says the connector is at the back of the motor, I wonder if there is a harness with an under helm connection for sterndrives? Still searching.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

OK, after much bilge diving in awkward positions, I have found the connector. It was literally behind the motor, between the motor and and transom. If you weren't looking, you would never see it unless you pulled the motor. Here is a picture of the conector and it is labeled "CAN LINE". I hope the rest of the install goes smoother! Thanks for your patience.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

They don't make it too easy do they!!

I hope that is just a purple weather cap on that connector. If so you just connect your main one resistor harness to that and run it up to the Helm. Then connect it to a junction box, plug one terminator resistor into the box. Plug your system tach or tach and speedo into the box. Turn key on and go.

If you just want system monitor you can get a two resistor cable that just plugs straight into the engine then into the gauge. It also has a link gauge connection for future 2" gauge additions.

I would recommend going with the junction box, this stuff is addictive! You will want to remove your analog gauges I am sure.

If that is just a weather cap, where do I get a resistor? I have been looking for parts and haven't seen just a resistor sold seperately. Thanks.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Here is a system monitor kit with harness, you would have to verify the length, and with Merc that is would work on your engine, pretty sure it would.

Here is a terminator resistor, if you go the junction box route. Your question made a good point, that cap you have should be a terminator resistor.... as long as there are no wires coming off of it. Take a look at the other side of the cap and see if it is yellow, not purple. (should also say "TERMINATOR").

I would suggest going to the Ebay store "tommy habana" (Silvio) he has been awesome, great to deal with, best prices, get a quote from him! I have bough all of my stuff from him.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hi all,
First thanks for a great forum and a great thread.

I have a Smartcraft SC1000 Tach and a Navman 6500 plotter. Do I need the Navman Gateway to get my Smartcraft readings over to the plotter or is it a way around it?
