I live in Lewis county NY and our sales tax is 8%. We have very few stores so are forced to shop in the two neighboring counties. Jefferson at 8% and Oneida that just raised theres to a whopping 9.75%. Most food items are tax free.

Ours is state wide at 6.5%, although some cities add a small additional tax, usually .5%.

Another question for everybody might be what are you taxed and not taxed on?

In MN, we do not pay sales tax on any labor type services, most food, and clothes.

0% as of right now. Seems like everytime we get a new Governor, the sales tax issue comes up to try to fund the school system.

Washington has no State Income Tax, 8.x in most areas for sales tax, no tax on UNPREPARED foods (buy it hot or cooked and it is taxed)...I think it is 8.6 in my county...

Re: How much is your sales tax?

State tax 6.25%, counties, cities & "public transportation districts" can add on up to max of 8.25% (8.5?). In my locality it's 7.75 but as Elmer says we're adding on to finance the Cowboy's stadium.

Groceries = nontaxable, but prepared food (restaurants) = taxable.
Clothing = taxable.
Most services = taxable.
Motor vehicles = cost net of trade value is taxable but at the state 6.25 only, no local tax on vehicles.

Once a year just before school starts they have a "tax-free" weekend. School supplies & clothes under some amount ($50?) are tax-free. Save 8% but still pay more than the back-to-school sale prices the week before & after - basically the state-subsidized profit margin for the merchants.

No income tax!

Chief, the first settlers here on the island were pirates and LF has never seen me without a beer in my hand so it was a natural choice.
