Re: How I made my boat seats.....(guide)

well...the video didn't work...actually, it did, but i didn't clean the lense and it was foggy and dirty...i'll try again

i've streamlined my process on laying out the pieces of vinyl (much less complicated now) and will post some info on it when i get home tonight.

will also post some pics on the hardware used for mounting the backrests and wrapping the foam in plastic...

more to come....

hey mrdflores the only thing that I haven seen you mention is what kind of thread you are using. Did you find something that is uv protected or super durable or for exterior application and did you have to buy a special needle and bobin for it to work?:rolleyes:

Thanks Bob...
were do you boat at down there...Cecila is near e-town isn't it?
Hey mrdjflores,
I just realized you ask me a question.
You are correct, Cecilia is only about 10 miles west of E-town. We have several lakes close to us but I want to spend some time on KY lake. I have spent most of my boating time on a lake in Arkansas.
I'll be looking forward to your video too.
Keep up the good work.
Bob

i searched online looking for thread specially for outdoor use, particularly marine use. This thread is spiral woven and uv protected. you do not have to use a special needle or bobbin for this thread, but as for sewing vinyl, you want to use a ball tip needle. I do not know about all sewing machines, but with Singer machines, the needles are color coded...you'll want to use the brown or blue banded needles...i hope this helps

Re: How I made my boat seats.....(guide)

i did a little more sewing tonight....
I have not pulled and stapled most of these as i am waiting for some final measurements on their mounting locations....

i'm saving the last 2 for last, since i am still thinking of a color stripe in them

I'm also organizing a new group of photos that show the simplified version of laying out the vinyl patterns...
this version is what i'll be making a video of.

This thread was so needed!

I have one question, do you have to use the piping? Several of my friends have had cushions made professionally without piping and they look great, but others have said that the piping is required for some unknown reason?

you don't have to use piping, alot of new boats don't use them very much...but if you don't use piping, there is a different type of seam you have to sew, i've heard it referred to a 'folded overlap seam' but i do not know much about that type...i think it is kinda like the seam on a pair of jeans or possible your couch cushions, but have never really looked close at it

Re: How I made my boat seats.....(guide)

well, i have all but 2 of the seats done for the rear seats, i am waiting for a friend to come help me with making a video of them.

I have changed a few things when laying out the patterns and putting all the pieces together.

Once i get the video made and posted, i may start a new 'streamlined' thread of all the work and a step-by-step guide

i forgot to post this one...

here are 4 of the 5 main seat bottoms...still need to adjust the tension of the vinyl on a couple of them (SWMBO says i'm being to critical of myself) but i don't like how the corners are all not looking the same....

Re: How I made my boat seats.....(guide)

I have one more seat back to sew for the rear seating....it will also have the chevron pattern sewn into it.

then i need to begin making the 4 cushions for the dinette table in the boat...2 of them have no ply wood base, they will be vinyl all the way around, plus a zipper....should be interesting....been looking real carefully as to how the original one's were made and taking a bunch of notes and sketches...

I also need to do something about the captains chair...recover or just buy another...interesting thing in this boat, the captain's chair folds down out of the way...i kinda like that.

when i get started on the dinnette seat back cushions, with zippers, i'll post some pictures of that
