Couple of unrelated things bugging me.

I played volleyball in the Navy; all 14th District in 1960. There is something I didn't know about then showing at Athens. One member of each team is wearing a different uniform from the rest. Seems to be a designated something or other. What is it?

Why is it that when we can see half of the light side of the moon it is called a quarter moon, but when we can see all of the bright side it is called a full moon?

Re: How come?

The volleyball team member that wears a different uniform is a defence specialist (called a liboro??). There are special rules controlling their movements, the umpire needs to know who they are( hence the diff. uniform) so that the special rules can be enforced. They are not always on the court, they are only used when the defence is found lacking.

Aldo

Re: How come?

rule change after your time jb. it's a libero. they are in fact a defense specialist. they are substituted for a player in the back court. they can't spike the ball or rotate to the front, simply play defense. much like the designated hitter, it is supposed to make the game more interesting by creating longer volleys.

Re: How come?

While we're on the subject, when did they change the scoring to whoever wins the point. I thought only the server could win a point. I also saw a ball, hit the net, and fall over to the other side for a point. Is there not a net sevice in volleyball, like tennis?

Re: How come?

I remeber reading somewhere that when you see only half of the bright side, your only seeing a quarter of the whole moon.......and it stuck. Then why do they call a full moon full instead of half????? Beats me.

JB, the moon is only illuminated on the half that faces the earth. When we only see half of the part that is facing the earth, it is in reality 1/4 of the moon.

Just as the stars shine bright in the heart of Texas, so does the moon.

Yeah, Tylerin.

That got my attention right away, but the NBC dudes interrupted their negatiive reporting long enough to explain that new rule. . . to make the game shorter.

Sideout scoring is when the serving team only can win a point. Rallypoint scoring is what we are seeing in Greece. Both scoring systems are currently in use. I have absolutely no idea why they are using the rallypoint scoring system in the Olympics.

Aldo

Re: How come?

JB, because 1/4 moon, 1/2 moon and full moon are terms used to describe the portion of the moon that is visable from earth. Due to the fact that the moon rotates once--as it revolves around the earth, we only see one side of the moon, that side reflects sunlight back to earth.

Re: How come?

New moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter and full moon are a reference to the phases in the lunar cycle.

Is that what your lookin for JB??

Anybody on here been "halfmooned" before??

JD

Re: How come?

A "Full" Moon occurs when the cheese mold builds up on the surface to the extent that all craters are filled. This happens on a regular basis. As we all know... an asteroid hit on the moon (or your refigerator) will disperse all mold forming on cheese. Once the mold is airborne (or is it vacuum-borne), the Moon begins the cycle again.

I really thought you would have known that JB :p
