One thing I've not seen mentioned in this discussion is one of the benefits of incandecent bulbs is that they can be used with a dimmer while a flourescent can not. Almost all the lights in my house are on dimmers and rarely are they turned on full, but can be when needed. This includes the light in the bathroom which allows us to use the bathroom in the middle of the night without being blasted awake with bright light. Modern style dimmers (not the ones with a big heat sink surrounding them) save a lot of energy and actually allow bulbs to live a lot longer by limiting the destructive inrush current if light is initially turned on in lower settings then adjusted to desired light level. Some dimmers are smart where they remember your last setting and will adjust there on there own only after doing an initial 'soft' or dim start. When they get flourescents to do this then I'll gladly change to them if the cost savings is still there.
