Sorry, I still fail to see how conserving electricity is a bad thing.....

If conserving electricity is so hot, why don't you go find a dank, dripping cave to live in. You could illuminate it with torches dipped in dinosaur fat.

In my more moderate (ahem) voice, saving electricity is a fine idea as long as it does not lead to divorce. In which case, everything else being equal, electricity use would double because there would be two households to illuminate.

If I tried to use compact flourescents in our main living areas, Mrs Boomyal would be setting up that second household. The quality of light is HORRIBLE. They burn out in the outside light fixtures, they don't last as long inside the house and they cost too much.

I'll save electricity when they come up with a reasonable substitute. Conservation does not add up when the intitial costs and quality (lack) far outstrip the energy savings.

From an energy use perspective, in the heating season, it matters little what kind of bulbs you use or how much they're on. Only about 1-2% of the energy consumed is converted to light. The rest is converted to heat, which supplements any heating system

Now in the cooling season, it's a double whammy. That same heat which was beneficial in the heating season, adds additional burden to the cooling system.

Do you cornsider Jane Fonda, (nominated for an Academy Award for her role in The China Syndrome 1979, [released just before TMI]), a Cornservative? Not sure where you are going with this Murky, but here is a little tid-bit for ya.......
76% of France's electricity is generated by nuclear.....

I can't imagine why I would want to comment.

Let me make it real clear for ya BB. You took a snippit from one of my rants on Global chillin update: ("'course we can't use Nuke power. Why? Lib politics 'course.") n' you said "THAT IS PATENTLY UNTRUE." I asked you to back up your contention, (in not the most polite way) n' you labled my reply: "What a juvenile response". Sorry for bein' immature BB. SO WHAT SAY YOU? Those folks listed above CORNSERVATIVES or were ya jus' blowin' smoke? JR

Re: Hey mates, Ya better stock up!

I use flourescent where ever I don't have dimmers. So far they work great. I did return a 4 pack the other day because 2 did not light.

I even use the new outdoor 26 watt floods and like them much much better than the 100-150 watt ic they replace. They make a much more uniform light pattern. They take about 15 to 20 seconds to reach full brightness in summer temps, and a full minute at around zero. This spring I'll be replacing the 4 150 watt halogen floods on the front of the house with new housings to take the flourescent floods.

When I have the front porch & driveway lights on with IC, it was 360 watts, with the new FL, it is 80 watts. A savings of 260 watts.

When I get around to changing the front floods power will drom from 600 watts to only 92.

I am waiting for the dimmable FL to come down in price so I can replace all these 45 and 75 watt ceiling floods in the house that are on dimmers.

Hey Mark, I'm slowly but surely doin' the same thing. Changed out all of the ICs at my business, (that stay on 24 x 7), and I'm pickin' 'em off one at a time at home. Why replace those with the hungry ones that burn out frequently? JR

Re: Hey mates, Ya better stock up!

I found with the kids rooms they always forget to turn off the lights, now with the FL lights, I don't mind as much.

Plus, there is a reduced load on the house circuits, that has to help extend the life of breakers and such. And the latest ones I bought only have a 1/4 or 1/2 second delay when turned on.

But the best part is the new light color temps are really nice. Much closer to natural light than IC lights.

Right now I can see the kitchen is all lit up and no one is there. Thats is 8 75 watt recessed ceiling lights burning away. The same circuit is shared with the Family room and sometimes when everything is on, the breaker trips. So putting FL dimmable in the kitchen will reduce the load on the circuit and save watts and save the dimmer feature that we like in there.

Also, a 3 way FL would be nice. I like my 3 way lamps.

By the way, when these bulbs fail, you cannot just throw them into the trash can. They must be recycled, because they contain mercury. This is a very hazardous material, as we all know. Now for me to dispose of them, I must drive 27 miles each wayto the only facility i know of, burning fossil fuels all the way, emitting "greenhouse gasses", along with a few hotdog gasses.
To my way of cypherin math, that sort of defeats the entire story the greenies and FLB stockholders are trying to shove down yer throat. Don't it?

I guess it would if you make it a special trip ,but if you save them up till your going to be in the area not to much trouble is it?

Well, I don't agree with forcing anything down your throat, guys.

Some environments and some varieties of the FLs don't seem to offer the advantages most of us enjoy. ZmOz reports very different results than I have.

Don't know what variety of FLs you use, 12Footer. My coiled tube GEs do not have any (federally required) warning labels about mercury.

ATTENTION,

ALGORE wants your V8 and shortly thereafter your 6 cylinder engines.

Sorry to hear that freedom of "choice" now is at a premium downunder.

Re: Hey mates, Ya better stock up!

The "Bright Lights" brand that are sold at Lowes has a mercury warning.

I tried two or three of these lights when they first came out about 7 years or so ago. They all failed within a short time, not even one full year.

So I tried two of the newer line about 2 years ago and they held up so I've been replacing all the lights I can over the couple of months.

I can tell you that we see about $30 savings a month on electric bill.
