Troy, There was/is NO standard way of doing transoms. What you see is what you get. You WILL do it better than what anyone or any factory ever did back then. I'd recommend running it about 1/2" from the sides of the hull. That will allow the PB to ooze out and you can form a nice concave fillet that will allow you to tab the transom to the sides. Also use a circular saw with the blade set about 1/16" shy of the depth of the transom wood and cut a 1 " grid on the transom wood. Vertical and horizontal. You can then use a hammer and chisel to easily remove the 1" squares from the outer skin and then finish up with a grinder to clean the outer skin of any wood clinging to it. Make sure and always wear your PPE!!!;)

WOG, no need for all that, most of the wood is just de-laminating and you could almost pull it off with your hands. I am using a wonder bar just to get behind it. All of it is just peeling off except some of the ply that is closest to the outer skin. I read horror stories on here about not prying against the outer skin for fear of cracking it... Not a problem here.
I am so glad I didn't try to take it out on the water before this resto-mod. Might have been trying to figure out how to get the motor off the lake bottom.
I always wear my PPE!!! Well, almost always.:D

Well, ALRIGHTY THEN!!! You're one of the lucky/unlucky ones with a self uninstalling transom core.

Quick grinding question. I picked up a 36 grit flap disc from HF for $3.?? Do the name brands last longer?? I did a small section tonight and it seemed like it was going away there towards the end of a short session. At this rate I will need a bunch of them.
Thanks-Troy

No work directly on the boat today. Just too hot/humid to put on the bunny suit and grind. Especially since it is suppose to cool down this weekend.
I did get some things done in the shop today. Even built this sexy Compound Miter Saw table.
It may be overkill, but two things to consider: a.) I had everything already (wood/casters/etc.) and 2.) The Miter saw table (part with the OSB board) sits down over the mobile stand. Thus allowing it to be changed out with other platforms that are the same.

I have two other platforms that are identical and I'm hoping to mount some other table top tools on them and I can change out the top and just use the same mobile base.
Here are some other shots of the shop, I have a lot more to do, but it is coming along nicely.

Speaking of "Bunny Suits." I made a great score at an auction yesterday. (25) 4XL Tyvek disposable suits. A whole case for $28.00 I normally wear a 3XL but I will enjoy the extra room for just over a $1 a suit.

Thank You Gus !!!!! That is my best little buddy. The Boat is for him and my son, his uncle. I cannot wait until the 3 of us can splash it and get some fishing line wet !!!!

Not sure what was going with photobucket. Usually I click the on the little gear icon in the corner and get the img link from there. For some reason it wouldn't work so I use the "Copy Image Location."
I won't do that again. Sorry folks !!!!

I picked up some of the resin disc's. Hopefully I will get a chance to use them this weekend. The Admiral has a honey do list this weekend. YAY !!!!
At least it is cool here...

Next Question. Does anyone know a good guestimate of what one square foot, 1/4" thick let's say, of fiberglass weighs?? Trying to find out a close guess of what my hull weighs. I can figure the wood, resin, etc. that I put in, but I don't know how much the hull is.

BTW, I used the resin sanding disc's yesterday on the transom. They worked really well. This transom "adhesive" is some tough stuff. I hit the side of the hull (inside) with it and it gets right down to the green color FG really well, so I think when I get to just grinding the hull bottom and sides it will go a little quicker.
Did about 1/3 of the transom and that alone took a good two hours to get down to the FG.
I was so hot and felt really nasty after being in the bunny suit that long (along with the other PPE) that I forgot to take pictures. If I get over there today I will snap a few.
Talk to you soon- Troy

Not much progress on the boat due to the cold weather and no heat in the shop, but here is what mama got me for Christmas. Plus a few accessories.

Today is a little bitter sweet. It marks the 1 year anniversary of me getting my boat. Bitter, because it is not further along in the resto-mod than I would have liked at this point.
Oh well, I am making plans that as soon as the weather warms up some I will be back at it. The cash tree is getting ripe, so I will soon be picking some to get supplies and parts. I figure with the weather here in Southern Indiana once the cold breaks I will have a good 2-3 days to get the glassing work done before the humidity spikes up !!!:flame:
On the sweet side, I have a boat (sort of:facepalm: ), I joined iboats.com in April and I have made new friends here and learned a ton, so that is always a positive !!!
Thanks for all your help and I look forward to the next year... and the year after that...and after that...and after that...:frusty:

Now I am going to go get Betty Lou (my truck) ready for a road trip. For Christmas my son got us tickets to the Notre Dame vs. LSU Bowl game in Nashville tomorrow.
GO IRISH !!!!!!

Happy New Year Everyone.

Thinking a little ahead as I still have to finish the transom before I start on the stringers, but I have a question.
Does PB completely harden or does it stay flexible??

The reason I ask is this, I have read on here (and some of the books I have) that you don't want the stringers to sit on the hull as it will create a "hard spot." So, if the stringers is bedded in PB with say, some foam spacers as I believe Friscoboater did on his Searay, and the PB completely hardens, would that not create the same hard spot? What am I missing in this?? Thanks as always- Troy

Well hello again papabear. I haven't posted in a while. The PB hardens...hard. It is not like caulk or RTV or anything else. It is made with polyester resin and fillers and such and therefore hardens after the cure time is done. As for the answer to your question about foam spacers and such with the stringers, I'll leave that to the pros to answer... I think you will love the new compressor for certain... I see you are fighting the changing weather as well. I am waiting until next week and then getting back to my project as well. I do have a shop to roll my tri-hull in to help with the cold/heat issues and hope to get it going full steam now that the holidays are over... I'll be watching your progress. Keep those pictures coming...

Hi Papabear, nice project you got. Just curious what you ended up doing about your hull support. I have to keep mine movable & I'm looking at using the trailer & building side supports on the trailer out of wood. I look forward to following your progress.

Thanks gm280. yea i am itching to get back at it. With the cold weather and neck problems I have dealt with I am a lot further behind than I wanted to be. I have thought about getting a heater, but with little insulation in the shop, and 16' ceilings I think it may be a losing battle when it doesn't get out of the 30's all day.

Can't wait to really use the compressor. It worked great for topping off my truck tires the other day. LOL

RStewaart, since I am redesigning the cap I cut the back part off to be able to do the transom and puts some supports on the trailer to keep it from distorting. When the transom is finished I will be adding framework to the trailer before removing the rest of the cap. I need to stay mobile as well.

Hopefully some of them there pro-fesh-n-alls will have rekon on my latest question. :)
