I have zero problem with the permitting process, after the sale I will not comply with any laws about how those weapons are stored in my home. Minnesota wanted to pass a safe storage act that said gun must be stored empty and ammo kept in a separate locked container. Hard no.

I agree. Hold me liable if my two year old grandkid shoots her brother but...

That's ridiculous. Leave it to Mn. I used to live there for many, many years...

Yeah, I agree. Professional career fields are always evolving and the people involved have to stay on top of things. However, if you know how to safely operate a firearm then you know. No need to keep proving the same point.
It's not about proving the same point. It is about making sure that you remember the right way. I remember, that when going on reserve duty. Always on the first day, there was the ritual of the refreshing course in first aid and in gun care. We could and would also bring in our private weapons to have them inspected. The army thought of it as a smart thing to do. But I guess every army has its own traditions.
I sometimes go to a rod and gun club to have a drink with a friend of mine and sometimes the disregard of safety rules makes me cringe. Hence the reason why I brought up the subject to begin in the first place.

curious if anyone on here knows the official stats on self defense firearm incidents per year.
If you don't, take a guess.
People use a gun in the US a couple hundred thousand times a year to stop and deter a crime. They seldom have to fire it but just displaying, showing, pointing is enough to stop or prevent a crime. This information comes from a book by John Lott titled More Guns, Less Crime. John Lott is an econoomics professor who has done in depth studies on guns and crime. He started out as an anti gun guy but after his research became a staunch pro gun and pro second amendment.. He’s written several books, all of them quite interesting and factual. If you want “ammunition “ to debate anti gun and anti 2A zealots arm yourself with the facts and read some of his books. A couple of his books include Gun Control Myths, The War on Guns, and More Guns, Less Crime. And more. All excellent reads.

for sure...
but coming from the CDC when "discussing" these kind of facts usually leaves these zealots with their mouth open as it's from the guv'ment. 😁

Read his publications and draw your own conclusions. Wikipedia is a left leaning and left biased . Multiple studies, including two from Harvard researchers, found a left-wing bias at Wikipedia in both article content and editor sanctioning.
I have 2 friends that are well known and can be found on Wikipedia. The inaccuracies about both of them are beyond imagination. The articles on both of them have been edited, changed, and modified several times resulting obvious prevarication. One of them is a former law enforcement official and the things stated about him concerning that part of his life are slanderous and outright lies. They twisted events and reported outcomes that never happened. He told me that it’s impossible to get Wikipedia to change anything even though totally inaccurate and slanderous. The only way you could get them to change anything would be through very expensive law suits. Both of my friends are conservative but are not directly involved in politics. So when you read something on Wikipedia about someone who is right of center take it with a very large grain of salt.

Kind of defeats the purpose if you have a gun for home protection and the gun and ammo are stored in 2 different places and locked? Those rules apply here in Canada too, but my guns are for hunting only so it doesn't bother me. Here in Canada if you used a gun in self defense, you would likely end up in more trouble then the attacker!

When my kids were young I decided to let a friend hang on to my guns so they weren’t in the house. Except for one black power pistol that was not able to fire. It was in a box in the basement that I assumed would never be found but I was wrong and one day my son asked me about it. Kids get into everything.
They are long out of the house now. I do keep my ammo and gun in the same case but the case is locked and there is a trigger lock on the pistol. It takes a few extra seconds but that’s a chance I have to take to be sure it doesn’t end up in the wrong hands.

Kept my guns in the house when the kids were born. My kids also never had a toy gun because in my belief a gun should never be thought of as a toy. I have loaded guns in my home when guests and my grandsons are in my home. I have drawers within the drawers on the night stands and the shot gun is in a concealed panel. That being said there is no human on earth that can approach my home without being detected and alerted, and on camera.

A little more context up front would've been helpful. There was mention of M16s and hand grenades too?

If we're talking countries, doesn't Switzerland require you to have a gun? And don't Switzerland and Israel require some kind of military service?

I was fortunate to have gun safety stressed as a kid (of reasonable age...), and a heritage of (guns are normal) from my dad and his dad (probably on Mom's side too, had we lived near them).

I also carried a handgun almost every day as part of my duties in the (United States) military, but even though concealed carry was becoming a thing a few years before I got out, I had no desire to do it for a number of years. Here you get into the significant differences of where you live, travel, etc. informing that decision (if it's an option). I just felt the responsibility outweighed the need in my case.

Changed my mind later though, probably around the time I found myself travelling to some remote areas, and thinking it'd be nice to carry something in the vehicle at least, and have no worry about the legality of it. I've had no trouble with the police during several traffic stops. Stay calm, tell them what you have (state laws vary here) without making any kind of move toward it, and cooperate. One deputy said "I live in [this state], I know everybody has a gun" when I told him (lol).

I don't really care to answer the original question (above my pay grade) other than to say, it's unfortunate that people with evil intent sometimes get the means to carry it out. And it's unfortunate that people aren't always as responsible as they ought to be either.

I am most pleased though, to have enjoyed the freedom to (hopefully be ready to) protect myself and family in one of the most effective ways there is, and to also have likely enjoyed something of the deterrent effect that "good" people being armed surely produces. If you're able to fight, and that's known, that's a good step toward not having to.

Figured that would be the response.
Not sure why you figured that but my response is factual and truth. As far as I recall I’ve never expressed any politics or political views on this site but perhaps there is such a post I do not remember. I do not visit this site with the purpose of expressing political views.

You may have found some inaccuracy in the Winky link I posted, but just saying it's left leaning means no more to me then another saying I don't believe that. There are links in the links to the research papers.

This isn't a lean left or right thing, it's information and folks need to do there own research. Mr Lott has done some good research he is just not 100% accurate on everything
