Re: Gulfstream Update-THE CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE HAS BEEN BROKEN!

You guys do unreal work. I'm getting really good with painting, learning to prep more first, and so forth. The engine work still eludes me, for the most part. I still have a boat that needs engine work. Boom, I keep a folder of pictures collected from here and other sites. They're all pictures of inspiring work, or work that I attempt to emulate. Your engine, installed, is about the 3rd picture that you've posted that I've put into that folder. Fine work!

Re: Gulfstream Update-THE CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE HAS BEEN BROKEN!

Thanks SFS. I'm haulin her down this afternoon to fill er up with gas while I can still get it for $2.70/gal. I'm hoping to take it out for a shakedown run on Thursday and take a load of kids out on Saturday.

Peter, I think I've finally isolated the whining in the distrib. It's awful tough getting measurements and understanding the relationship of things that you can hardly get to to see and measure. It turns out that even after raising my distributor gear (on it's shaft) it is still riding on block. I finally got a good understanding of the relationship of the parts, some decent measurements and with the use of some machinists dye it all came clear.

My distrib shaft is already like swiss cheese from moving the gear around but this time will do the trick.

I am so confident that I even put all the rear seats back in. Pictures will follow within a couple of days.

Thanks Tengals. I hope you're not as worn out following this thread as I am having been chasing this "distributor whine"

Two weeks trying to figure out this whine so that I don't chew up the cam gear and the distributor gear. I've made swiss cheese out of my distributor shaft moving the gear further and further up the shaft. Undoubtedly the gear had been riding down on the block but after the last gear move, Now get this, the whine turned out to be a vacuum leak under the carburetor.

It seems the the hose clamp that I had used to attach the PCV hose to the fitting at the back of the carb spacer was holding the carb up off the gasket. It was just screaming and sounded like it was coming from the distrib.

That is now remedied, the motor runs like glass and I'm ready for the road test.

EXCEPT...

during the repair session, with a friend, we forgot to turn the water back on to the motor. Ran it for 3-5 minutes with NO WATER. It never showed on the guage because of my closed system. Tomorrow I will call the OMC Guru and see if I need to redo the O/D pump before the road test..

It'll only be another $300.00 after having just filled both the boat and the Suburban for $170.00.

Yes Aldo, after moving the gear up again, we were trying to dial in the carb and had trouble getting it to idle below 900 rpm. All the while that d*** whine kept up. That's when my friend got out his stethescope and started checking. With the vacuum leak fixed (a small but loud one) it's idling smoothly down at 700 rpm and QUIET finally.

Chuckle'ing quietly to myself... not at you Boomer, but with you. Seems like we have walked similar paths in getting our rigs back on the water. Always something stupid cropping up and throwing a monkey wrench into the mix. (And some of it self-inflicted  :( )

Hopefully you have crossed over now and things are working out. Thumbs up!

Pull that drive back off and put a waterpump kit on it. After running that long, you are sure to have messed up the housing too.

Re: Gulfstream Update-THE CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE HAS BEEN BROKEN!

Just hooking my shift converter back up. Headed out for the live water test at 2:30 pm. Took the boat down to the OMC guru, we took off the drive and he was amazed that there was no damage to the impeller and housing. He said my A** was saved because I had just enough water coming back out my heat exchanger to keep from having to pick impeller pieces out of the water passages. He turned over the impeller and sent me on my way. No Charge. Whew. Pictures later!

Re: Gulfstream Update-THE CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE HAS BEEN BROKEN!

This is the moment (drum roll please)

DSCF0797.jpg

So far I can hear no water burbling into the boat. Good omen.

DSCF0798.jpg

Motor starts right up. But wait, the ordeal is not over. It won't shift into gear. Eeek! I paddle over to the dock and removed the shift converter. Seem that I crossed the cables this morning after disconnecting to examine the water pump after having run it dry for 5 minutes yesterday. I reinstalled the cable and it shifted like butter. Now off to the deep water.

DSCF0802.jpg

Wow! Incredible. I think I have whiplash. I couldn't even aim the camera, I just pointed it in the direction and hit the button.

9:1 compression and regular unleaded, 4 bbl Holley, Edelbrock Intake, GT40P heads and all those little rollers on the cam and rockers. I slowly brought it up to 4K rpm then punched the throttle up to 4400. I thought I was in a dragster. I didn't want to go any faster in the chop so I pulled it off at 4400 (45 mph) There was plenty more to go and it was just begging me to do it. I'll probably have to reprop but I'll wait for calmer water to test the limits.

As usual I have a few details to finish off but it's ready for the last gasp of summer. Maybe in the future I can take on a cosmetic project, the likes of tengals beauty.

I also think the smart tabs are awesome. I already did a little post on them but I will test more later and report back but for preliminaries, 15 mph, on plane, flat and level and I wasn't thinking about it at the time but there was ZERO bow rise. There were only two of us in the boat so I'll have to report after running with the full load and toys.

All too often, I see motors that are rebuilt to a high standard but they never seem to get that 'look', the very last stage of the rebuild.

The performance and the 'look' is a credit to you.

Aldo

That is great, Boomyall. Looks like you'll have a sleeper there once you put the lid over that motor! I've been watching you're whole resto, thanks for sharing, you've done great work throughout.

Now I gotta go to the lake and readjust them again!!!

Got me some more stuff to throw into the hole!
Wifes not happy but I am.   :D

It wouldn't shift. I paddled back to the ramp dock and had to remove the shift converter and disassemble it down thru a hatch on the aft deck. I had apparently crossed the cables from the outdrive when I put it together in the driveway an hour before. This project was just not going to end quietly!

Once corrected, it popped right into gear, easy as you please, at 600 rpm and the rest is now history.

You should be careful on your predictions :p

How'd you mess up your carb just changing the jets. And why did you change the jets??

Vroom, Vroom. Now all I need is some sun and warmth. Might squeeze a little bit out of this old Pacific Norwest weather yet. Tomorrows forcast does not bode well for a day on the water with my daughter and friends.

Well Peter, now I can get back to a normal life and start putting a years worth of tools back in their proper place before the weather sets in.
