Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

Ok so before i decided to restore my boat i had it listed on CL & i was asking $650. Whats the opinions on that? I have $4000 in the boat as of right now before i start the 2nd restore. Heres the add & pics i posted & feel free to comment plz.

18FT GLASTRON w/ 115 MARINER
Forsale is a 18ft glastron bowrider that needs some work. The interior was redone a little with the floor replaced over a year ago but the boat has sat outside ever since so its in fair condition. It is sitting on a 2003 tennessee trailer thats in almost new condition. It has a 91 mariner 115 long shaft mounted on it but the motor was never hooked up because the control box has been taken apart so it was never ran by me but i was told it has good compression so its sold as is.

That last pic is priceless.

The last pic was taken before i mounted the 115 mariner on it a few months ago. It was actually taken the day after i had recovered the boat from being stolen & got it kind of cleaned up. As you can see they left nothing of the 135 black max but the mid section.

Never seen one here on the east coast, that would make a great river and back bay boat here.
Hang a jetdrive outboard and that would go just about anywhere.

They're extremely common here, people use them as tenders and tie them to their bigger boats etc. Look, here's a few truckloads of new ones, complete with warrantees for the same price as the moron was asking for his junk. http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/boa/1589005017.html

Yes I have to admit that there are many, and I mean many crazy ads on craigslist, everyone thinks they have a gold mine. Dont care what you paid for it 13 years ago, it's *&^% now! However, I just purchased a 1964 Sears fiberglass runabout with a 1958 50HP V4S-10 fat fifry..100bucks and that got the boat with all original chrome, a bit taddy, perfect windshield, steering wheel ect... and believe it or not the engine fired right up. Rotted transom, but the rest of the glass and floor is fine. so, I guess I got a deal. I was going to SEACAST the transom, but decided to have it professionally done for about 500.00 as I have already prep'd the boat for transom work. But I will say this. I looked at a lot of "needs a little TLC, for a lot of money" hahaha!!

Well let me tell you guys about a very GOOD buy... It wasn't from Craig's List, but rather from the Boat Angel program that sells on E-bay. I had never owned a boat (at age 48) and after seeing so many 100's of pictures my friends were posting on FaceBook, I decided that I wanted to get in the game. We live about an hour from the coast and about 40 minutes from Lakes Marion (Santee) in South Carolina.

We had no idea whether we were even "boat people." I used to spend all my weekends playing golf. After a lot of debate over buying new, fairly new, or a project boat, I started visiting dealers and looking on E-bay for used boats. I looked at everything that the Boat Angel program had, and for a couple of weeks it was mostly junk far worse than what I wanted to tackle or either way too far to travel. I ended up finding a '89 Sea Ray bowrider in terrific condition with a great trailer. The owner (only 1 owner) listed that it didn't run and he later told me that his mechanic said it would take $4k to get it in good reliable running condition. Basically, he was one of those guys that couldn't screw in a light bulb and his mechanic was trying to take him for a ride.

We had her out without spending a dime on her (lose wire on the starter) but trip #7 the impeller went out, but it was the weekend before opening day of college football, so she was going to be parked anyway. After about $375 for starter, steering cable, trim solenoid, bellows and seal kit, and impeller kit, this boat is absolutely fabulous. My wife and I are now re-upholstering the entire boat to go from teal and gray to garnet and black (yea, we are USC Gamecock fans) and we are going to paint too.

The trailer has oil filled hubs, three new tires, and the spare is mounted on a spare hub just in case. The guy I bought it from was the original owner and had had the boat for 20 years.

I bought the boat at auction for $1525.00
Would I rather spend hours and hours on the water with half naked women or four hours with guys who pee behind trees? Yep, we're boat people, and now I'm looking for a camper to put at the lake so we don't have to drive home and will probably buy a pontoon at the end of this summer.

If that boat isn't water logged (AZ boat) It would make a great resto. At that size with good stringers and transom $2200 is a little steep but no far off. Of course unless you know the stringers and transom are good it's more like $1000 with running V-8 and outdrive.

Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

I'm looking to buy my first boat. Money is tight and the boss...er, I mean wife has given me a small budget and orders to, "not buy another project." Needless to say my options are limited. This post interested me...

http://bit.ly/bO5Rlj

I sent an email 3 weeks ago. Today I got my reply with extra pics. The floor is soft and should be replaced. The interior is shot, the cushions are disintegrated, and the entire interior has been removed from the boat. The steering is frozen, but the owner has another cable. Oh, and by the way, the owner has another boat and trailer that needs work (no motor) if I am interested.

Hopefully I will find my boat. Until then I will always get a good laugh from Craigslist ads.

3 week turn around on an ad....wow. Sounds like a gem.

I mailed a guy about a propeller, asked a few generic questions.....he mails back 5 days later, "Hello!"...that's it.

How do these people get stuff on line to begin with?

Nice restore but $79 large is a bit much to ask.

Nice find. That's a headscratcher alright.

I wondered if that was a typo for 7900. Hard to tell. Whether it's a typo or not, at first the guy sounds cluelessly innocent:

"Some of you are wondering how I came up with the Buy it Now price, That is what this boat sold new from Wellcarft (sic) in 1988."

...<snip>....

then he shifts into this weird Grey Poupon mode:

"To all,

I have Lowered the Reserve on this Auction. I know it is probably not enough for a sale. The bidding so far is quite embarrassing.

So I want Thank the staff and the owners of the company's who were involved in the restoration of this fine piece of Artwork. Sorry I had to show case your fine workmanship on a online auction site.

If Plan to test the waters again to sell my Boat it will be with a reputable Broker who deals in Classic Water Craft

Once again I want to Thank all of you involved, including the bidders interested in my boat.

If you are out on the Chesapeake Bay this summer and you hear a Go Fast Boat and do not see any but a Black and White Monte Carlo,, it is probably Me.

Cheers

Robert"

I'm sure the A-list brokers will be falling all over themselves for your sweet 88 Wellcraft, even if I myself am not worthy of it!

That is one of the weirdest adds I have ever seen anywhere. There is some discussion about $2500, but I think he means $25K which might be a reasonable target, but $79K? And why is this a "classic"? Nice boat, but wow

I dunno, I don't think I'm gonna pay $3250 for a 6 HP Champion outboard from 1957, even if it's still in it's original shipping box in "museum" quality....

Me either. Thing is, for something as rare as that, you just never know. 53 years old, never used, and still in the original shipping crate? Vey hard to figure what somebody might just be willing to pony up for it.
