That figures.....Lipp.

We just finished building a 30 foot custom boat with diesel power. This boat would fly at 55mph. The build was my responsibility. We had her finished and was prepairing for a seatrial before the new owner showed up from the Bahamas. Everything went well till I went to motor her off the trailer. The shifter was backwards, which ment foreward was reverse. Instead of rectifying the problem we went on our way. Took a little to get used to. Seatrial went fine otherwise. While loading her back on the trailer, several people watching, most I knew, things got a little out of sequence. Wind picked up and made loading difficult. Under duress I was approaching the trailer to fast. I needed to stop....quickly...to avoid scratching the hull on the trailer. I jammed her in reverse. Wrong...that was foreward. The boat went over the trailer and onto the tailgate of the tow vehicle.

We had 2 days to repair her and repaint with Imron.

See.....not funny at all!

Doing a runout with inverted controls? Must be a man thing.

Not funny, but not undeserved either. I feel for ya.

Re: Funny Ramp Stories/ Boat Ramp Watching

okay here's everyone a good one. First I need to set the stage.....The ramp on Lake Wylie SC, is a four lane ramp and very busy in the summer. There is one ramp on the far end that is really short with a hugh drop off at the end of the concrete ramp and the best part of this story is, there is a sign on that ramp saying "Short ramp, small crafts and jet ski's only" Okay here comes a guy with a 22' foot pontoon boat headed right toward that ramp. Several of us flagged him and told him he would need to wait for the others ramps as this one is WAY to short for that rig. "He replied, I know what I'm doing" So we all set back a watched the show.

He backed it in and before the pontoons hit the water BAM off the ramp the trailer went. Now the trailier frame is sliding on the concrete and he keeps going. Finally he stops and gets out and looks. And says, now get this. "What the hell is up with this ramp?" We all just pointed to the sign.

Anyway he says "oh no problem I have a four wheel drive" He locks in the front axle of his truck and guns it and litterally tears the axle off the trailer. And then gets out looks at the onlookers and says "Can someone give me a hand here". Well to make a long story short, we go ahead and launch his boat and pull it to the bank and several of us literally pick up the trailer and carry it out of the water for him, laughing the whole time. This would not have been as funny if he hadn't been giving ample warning or at least read the sign. The is by far the most fun I ever had at a ramp.

Re: Funny Ramp Stories/ Boat Ramp Watching

I just came back from the Soundside Park ramp in Surf City, NC where I watched what had to be as goofed up as any story told here. When I arrived, there was a 30' pontoon boat floating in the water blocking the ramp on one side. On the other side of the ramp, there was a dually pickup with a big trailer submerged in the water to beyond where I could see the deep end of the trailer.

It appears the trailer had rolled beyond the ramp and gotten stuck. I've seen many large boats put in there though admittedly never a 30 footer... but I've never seen anybody go beyond the the end of the concrete before. Well, the driver of the dually put it in gear and tried this and tried that, without luck. Finally he put a maximum effort into pulling the trailer out and he got it... a huge double axled trailer. It actually rolled forward a foot or two and then caught on something on the bottom of the ramp, then came forward easily after the driver spun his tires a little.

The trailer damaged one of its axles as the trailer now drives with only three tires touching the road.

Of course, after all of that, the people loaded their stuff and departed towards the Intracoastal Waterway....about 30 minutes later. All told, maybe an hour or more completely blocking the ramp. I don't know what they're going to do when they try to get their boat back out. Film at 11?

Re: Funny Ramp Stories/ Boat Ramp Watching/equipment failure

Last summer, my dad and I decided to go fishing on lake Tetonka. No trouble getting there or launching the 12' Sea nymph tinny..But, When I went to pull the trailer out of the water, the trailer wheels were off the cement planks, and so I gave it it a bit more gas. Thats where the trouble began. I heard a loud clunk and saw in the rearview mirror the trailer roll back into the water. I heard a guy on the dock yell "what the hell??" I get out and go behind my 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with trailer hitch and find the bumper with hitch still attached to the boat trailer lying on the ramp.
The friend of the guy on the dock came over and just couldn't believe what he was seeing, what the *&*^$#, how the (&*(&*&^%% could that happen--etc...
Fortunately, he had a truck with a 2" ball and towed my boat out for me after I retrieved my bumper, and threw it in the trunk of the car.
Of course had to borrow a friends truck to tow the boat home.
Wasn't funny at the time, but now it always makes me laugh when I think about it :)

Reminds me of the story of the guy who tried to steal an ATM machine by wrapping a chain around it and hooking it up to his step up bumper. Of course the ATM won the tug of war, and the genius was arrested later after they traced the license plate on the bumper still sitting in the bank parking lot... chained to the ATM.

Re: Funny Ramp Stories/ Boat Ramp Watching/equipment failure

This is NOT so funny.

I back down beside another boater who is fiddling with his boat. He is an older gentleman with a young man and a couple of kids. I have my own kids, a neighbors kid, my wife and another couple all to get on the boat. I'm a relatively new boater so I have to stick to my checklist and sequence so I don't forget the plug, a kid, the cooler, the map, release the travel lock, hook up the battery, among other things I've already forgotten or could yet forget.

So I concentrate on my tasks and tune the other boater out. I get the boat in, loaded up, tie up to the end of the dock so the next boater can back in as my wife pulls the trailer out. THEN I look over at the other boater and I see he has just pulled his boat out with the motor down and has drug his skeg up onto the dry part of the ramp with the rear of his boat about 6" above the bunks.

I still wish I had taken a moment to see what he was fiddling with so I could have given him a word of warning.

Re: Funny Ramp Stories/ Boat Ramp Watching/equipment failure

This one isn't funny to me yet but others might find it funny.

I'm in the boat all loaded up next to the dock and my wife is in the truck ready to pull out. She tries to pull out and the wheels spin. A couple of times. I'm in the boat back of the truck on the passenger side so another boater on the ramp next to us relays to her from me to make sure the wheels are straight ahead. The wheels spin. A couple of times. I relay to him to relay to her to hold her foot on the brake and give it a little gas and let slowly let off the brake transferring power to the wheels. He relays this perfectly. The wheels spin. A couple of times. I relay to him to him to tell her to hold her foot firmly on the brake while I come around.

I tie up the boat and come around to the truck. By now we have a small crowd because nobody can use our ramp and the other ramp was blocked by the gentleman relaying directions. Parking brake firmly set she gets out and I get in. I hold one foot on the brake while I give it some gas with the other slowly transferring power to the rear wheels. I pull the trailer out no problem.

She still thinks I know a secret for pulling the trailer out and I won't tell her.
