That idle screw looks kinda worn, don't think that would keep it from starting. Yes, the timing could be off if the PO was jacking with it.....could also be a sheared flywheel key. The only way to know is to check it and see. Take a look at that thread I mentioned about the lync n sync.....it explains how to set up the carbs and timing....might make more sense then....

I watched the video went to the boat I can get the slider to contact the throttle part but I can’t get it even with the mark the mark is to low. Would that mean my timing is off. This is what’s written in my manual. Pic below
I feel like the carbs are not pulling gas. It was dripping out while I would crank the motor before the first backfire

The motor can start even if the timing is off as much as 15-20d.
That screw, not bad enough to make it not start.
Check for TDC. Told you how on the other post.

Looking at pic of your manual, looks like an operator's manual which only gives basic info....need a factory service manual. Post a pic of the cover....

Tdc is good took the spark off set wheel at tdc and I couldn’t even put a screw driver in it was practically at the very top. Timing does look like it was messed with the screw for adjustment is slightly damaged at the slot for the driver
Mine doesn’t look like that I’ll order one.

Take a look at the table of contents on the one you have and the one I posted.....no comparison. Even the pros have manuals, and use them. And 55 bucks is cheap compared to the hourly rate at most shops. (y)

Should I check the timing. If not what else should I check.

Yeah, that's just an owner's manual....not much info in there for diagnostics or repair. Wouldn't hurt to check the timing....the service manual will tell you how to do it, in detail. Covers all the major systems. Worth the money.

Question for timing I’ve seen people time it to the right 28d mark and people do the middle mark 30d. And the video Frank made he also says to time it to 28d mark the right one at cranking speed
Also I realized on the photo I put of the timing they have on the manual is wrong Frank says. 32d| 30d| 28d| The manual reads 30d at WOT with markings of 34d| 32d| 30d|. Could it be they timed 28d at wot Instead of 30d which means the timing is retard which would explain the backfire with starter fluid.
I just don’t really understand how to time it is it 28d idle crank speed and 30d wot and crank speed?

Timing off by 2 degrees does NOT cause a backfire.----Do some real trouble shooting I say !

Update
Timing was off. I’d say it was at about maybe 14d. Put it at 28d static had some trouble starting and it backfired twice but after that it finally idled. :) But now when I went to give it gas at the carbs it would die almost instantly. Then I thought maybe it had to do with the trigger since I was bypassing it by just opening the valves. So I tried doing it with the actual throttle at the helm or whatever it’s called still stalled. Should i advance the timing maybe. I have a video below oh also to add it stalls when I put the choke in don’t know if that normal. Also when I put it in gear it made a kinda grinding sound while going in? @topgun3690 @jerryjerry05 View attachment IMG_1009.mov

The first 5-6 posts cover help and tricks for fixing your motor.
Look for the link and sync
The way it died: it looks like the rod between the carbs might be set wrong(maybe)??

I tired the lync and sync already followed the video from Frank. Along the lines of loosen the screw let the valves close then retighten. Set then cam with the black roller. but I could try it again thanks for your time and advice thanks a lot I really appreciate it.
I think you need to find a shop to help you with this motor.
Trust me I’ve looked no one wants to take the boat they say it’s too old. I know I don’t know much about boats but I’m trying and I appreciate everyone’s time and advice

Your video.....looks like not enough water in your bucket.....needs to at least be over the cavitation plate or use proper muffs on the hose. Hard to tell but you may have been running it dry. Gotta make sure water is flowing or it will overheat and damage your engine.

I had the water above spot where it takes it in when it it started it sucked it up and also lost some when u put it in gear lol. I’ll make sure to fill it up and clean it out for good water thanks.
I’ll let you guys know what happens. Thanks for your time
