Re: First attempt at boat repair

Another Update. The wife and I contacted Wise Seating for swatches on our seats the ones we are looking at are
wd838_871_fmt.jpegwd1033_0034_fmt.jpegwd1034_0034_fmt.jpegwd1130_927_fmt1.jpeg

I will be buying new 2 lounge seats and 2 jump seats,. The rest is a bit interesting, a friend of my moms had an upholstery shop, they have retired and have excess vinyl. So I will be getting free fabric, and I offered to pay my mom to sew them. Bow area has 3 seat bottoms, 2 rectangular and 1 triangle, and 6 back cushons for the bow. Stern has 2 square cushons, the doghouse, a removable cushon over the engine, and vinyl on the side panels. 12 cushons and the doghouse and 2 side panels, does paying her $250 seem fair, or is that a bit much?

It's your Mom!!! Call an upholstery shop and tell them what you want covered and get and estimate. You WILL be shocked. $250 for mom is a good deal. Take her to Dinner too!!!:D

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Busy day today. Got the steering and dash removed, along with the throttle assembly, and found the dash on the starboard console was hacked to bits, and needs to be replaced and re glassed.

Then came the beginnings of the demo. Stringers were shot suprise suprise, and there were HUGE air voids behind the glass

Then came the bulkhead at the back of the ski locker. The drain was glassed over (shoddy chop gun work from the looks of it.)

And the stern stringers were made from 2 2x6 dimensional lumber. do I need to do them this way or would say 2 layers 3/4 ply work just as well?
100_4860(edit).jpg

and the motor mounts were completely rotten, I didnt even have to cut them out, 2 kicks and they were removed. But they too were made of 2x4 or 2x6

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Also wanted to thank everyone, got a gear puller and the steering came right apart. Other huge score, got me a Sawzall. Met a local on the reservation who sold me a Dewalt cordless for $15 with battery and charger (I did due dilligence and matched the name on the tool to his ID to make sure it wasn't stolen) and I also got a real cheap 6 amp Pitbull Saw for nothing, it was in the dumpster at the gun range, missing the wobble plate, but I can tough it out for corded cutting. Next up, out come the stringers, Have pics soon!

Congrats on the new gear in the tool corral & getting the steering wheel off!

If you match the dimensional lumber's size, laminated 3/4" plywood should work better. The glassed over drains certainly didn't help.... You'll have lots of time to consider a plan to direct water below decks back to the bilge.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

i was planning on doing like trooper did on his build, use a piece of pipe to line the drain holes, i have access to a couple hundred miles of HDPE pipe, size 3/4" - 4". and I was planning on angling the deck towards the center, so water will flow to the ski locker and bilge, not to the sides 3/16 drop from edge to center line. As for the deck, I am still on the fence paint or gel, leaning more to paint than gel. I will be able to get 2 sheets of 3/4 ply this week or next for starting stringers, and as much as I hate to, I am debating Filleting with PL over PB, just for the sake of availability of materials, and my schedule. I can afford 72 hours cure before working, i already have 240 hrs plus between sessions. If I do PB I will have to wait till after christmas to get started, and that is just too long for me to sit patiently waiting.

Just catching up to your thread. Doing a great job.
Have 1 question. Why do you think you have to wait for the PB. It will cure in a short time. Like 45 minutes.
The PL needs at least 48 to 72 hours to setup.
Some gentlemen just use PB to set the stringers and do it all in one day.
Check out OOP's thread. He has a mix for the PB going under the stringers. Its alittle different than the regular PB mix.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Decker I decided against PB due to outside time constraints, Availability of materials being #1 on the list. I will not be able to order resin or glass till after christmas, The wifey will not let me order any of the glass stuff till after christmas so she can be sure we have enough cash to cover the holidays. If I want to keep this thing moving, I am going to have to use PL. I know PL requires 72 hours to set up, and if I fillet go on a 10 day tour at work, when I get home it should be set up just fine.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

got a go at stringer removal, and as much as I hate rot, I am starting to love it. the entire rear stringer from bulkhead to stern came out in 1 piece with a gentle pry. sanding will be a minimum, and it left the perfect place to set the stringers and get them back where they need to be. it is just going to take 4 layers of 3/4 play to make each rear stringer.

If you are going to leave any of the remaining stringer channel sticking up, make sure and sand and clean the inside with acetone so the resin will adhere properly.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

one more pic of the stringers along the sides of the ski locker. I cant believe it was glassed like this. I have never built a boat before and even I know better.
100_4865.jpg

and to fill the time while my recip is recharging, I am still varnishing teak. I LOVE the way it is looking, after another 4 or 5 coats it will look like glass, or at least that is my goal. The strips have 3 coats, the wheel has 3 and the 3 trim pieces have only 1 coat. The long strips (not pictured) have 2 coats. not sure about doing the boarding steps , and I am debating varnishing the swim ladder. any ideas on that?
100_4876.jpg100_4877.jpg

And also a pic of my bracing, the trailer bunks are supporting most of the hull, and my braces are up by the bow. the entire trailer is sitting on leveling jacks

another hour cutting, and please dont everyone hate me for it but demo is SO EASY.
100_4878.jpg100_4879.jpg100_4881.jpg
That is the port aft stringer, it all came out in 1 piece just had to slit the fiber

and the mid stringers are a bit tougher till I find this little glassed over channel. suprise!! cut the glass out of that and I will have ideal guides for laying in 2 3/4 ply stringers.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

It was probably just an area that got covered w/ fiberglass during fabrication when the glass was draped across the hull & stringer leaving that little void between the hull~stringer~fiberglass......

Re: First attempt at boat repair

My guess would be a layer of glass over end grain balsa if it was built like my ebko was...demo looking good!

And the balsa rotted away & left a channel adjacent to the stringers? Was the balsa used to space the stringer up off the hull?
