Easypoxy question

Hey All,
I'm to the point now where I'm ready to lay new flooring and need some advice on painting it. I've done my research (must be thousands of waterproofing boat deck post on here) and I've decided to go with Easypoxy because of it's potential to be affordable. However, after reading the manufacturers PDS for bare wood it requires:

1) 2018 Clear Sealer $66.59/gal
2) 6149 Easypoxy White Undercoater $69.99/gal
3) 3175 Pettit EasyPoxy Topside Paint $84.99/gal

Thats $221.57, not including shipping. At that price I would rather do the epoxy. Regardless, how can I prep my plywood (i.e. replace items 1 and 2 from above with materials from Lowes) so that I can keep the total price around $100? Thanks!

I got some bad news, owning and restoring boats is expensive!

You aren't going to be able to find something to replace items 1 and 2 for $15.

You could use this stuff instead, but I don't know how good it is or how long it will last.

lol very true. Its funny you linked that product. I must of stared at it for 10 mins last weekend trying to figure out whether that would or would not work. I was hoping some type of sealant like a clear deck sealant would work followed by a layer of oil? based paint then Easypoxy it.

If you're wanting to try and get by with a a Cheap Deck Painting solution you could.
Use Rustoleum Professional Oil Based paint from Lowe's. Thin the first coat with Mineral Spirits 50%. Coat it heavy and let it soak. Do the edges Twice. Let it dry overnight, Then add acrylic Enamel Hardener to the Full Strength Paint and roll on 2 - 3 coats, waiting a day between coats. That should last for several years with proper maintenance and cost would be under a $100 bucks.

Yep Thats the stuff. If you've got a Tractor supply to get the hardener then use their Tractor Implement paint as well. Same stuff basically as the rustoleum. Rustoleum only makes hardener for their industrial paint that they sell wholesale. Not to the public

Hi jeeep. +1 On the good 'ol rustoleum oil based enamel. I put a couple coats on my non-PT exterior grade plywood and it's help up quite well over the past several seasons. Best of all, it's readily available and you can always apply an additional coat if need be. However, you may first want to seal the raw wood with a couple coats of Spar Urethane ($20-$30 a gal. at lowes/HD), then paint it. Between the two you should get well sealed wood. Perhaps not as good as epoxy, but not bad for the price and ease of purchase. Be sure to put some closed cell foam below deck for emergency flotation in the form of either pool noodles from the dollar store and/or the pink and blue insulation foam board from lowes/HD. You can actually get everything you need, except the epoxy, to rebuild a tin boat from the big box stores. They even sell all the Stainless steel hardware you may need, as well as aluminum angle, stock and lots of other useful hardware and lines. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Sooorrryyy but one last thing. Would Magic All-Purpose Enamel work instead of the Tractor Implement Enamel? The All-Purpose Enamel is a brighter white. If I had to go out on a limb and think for myself, I would say yes.

Not sayin you can't, but I'd say the Tractor paint is better quality and in the long run would be more durable. Your boat...Your choice.

I used a different combination. First I coated all the edges of the wood with Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES). This stuff is very thin and will penetrate well into the wood, much farther than regular epoxy. Caution, it is really toxic so you need a respirator, rubber gloves and eye protection, but it does the job. Then I coated the wood with epoxy resin. I used system three two part. This seals up the wood completely. It;s a bit expensive but I will never have to do it again, and neither will any subsequent owners.

CPES (1 qt epoxy, 1 qt hardener) about $68.00
1 Gallon System Three Epoxy Part A $111.72
1/2 gallon System Three Epoxy Part B $72.87

I didn't use CPES, the USComp 635 is a thin epoxy already.
