Fellow iBoat members, I am at KHQM, Bowerman field, Hoquiam, Wa. I assumed custody of the creamated remains of DonS at 1230 PDT.
At 1250 we'll depart and drop DonS 1 mile West of Ocean Shores in the Pacific Ocean.

the actual drop will occur at 1300 PDT

Re: Don S Final arrangements

I could hear Don barking at us, "all you needed to do was handle this back in July and there would be no hassle now. Why'd you go and make it so difficult?" And I'd say, "yeah, I guess you're right." And he'd say "well yeahhhh" in his drawn out way with a little chuckle added in to soften it. Miss you, Don. Godspeed.

Edit: I so wish I had a recording of his voice. I really miss talking to him, and I'd love to share it with those who never had a chance to actually talk with him. Picture his avatar with a Santa Clause voice and chuckle, and you'd pretty much have the Don I knew on the phone. I almost wish we hadn't found the picture. The wizard in his avatar was the Don I knew in my mind's eye.

Dang I forgot who found the pic :( Speak up.

Re: Don S Final arrangements

This thread, and the various passages that members have posted made me think of a poem by John Masefield...a former Poet Laureate:

As read by Tom O'Bedlam (a pseudonym for someone who has been reading poetry on the net, anonymously, for a few years....but quite well :))
"Sea Fever" by John Masefield (read by Tom O'Bedlam) - YouTube

...and the reading above as background to a very well-done video:
SEA FEVER on Vimeo

This entire thread might even have put Don at a loss for words, although if he watched the video he'd probably grumble "too many surfboards....no boats!" :eek:

The poem:

Sea Fever
By John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel?s kick and the wind?s song and the white sail?s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea?s face, and a grey dawn breaking,

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull?s way and the whale?s way where the wind?s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick?s over.

Don, sleep quietly, dream sweetly....

Re: Don S Final arrangements

Don had already past on when I found this forum, and yet I read more of his post's in the beginning than anyone's. When I learned of his passing I was sad. As I have spent more and more time here I have come to appreciate all of the advice given by several different members. I began reading this thread and it dawned on me that I am reading posts and learning from some of the greatest, most selfless people I've seen in a long while. I am proud to be a member, and humbled to read the many posts to this thread.

Remembering Don, and thanking all who made his final journey a truly fitting one.

Re: Don S Final arrangements

Dear iBoaters,

We also have some pictures and a video that sort of rounds out the day.

Nathan (the funeral director in Hoquiam, Wa) told us that Don was a former USAF member. When my wife Rainie, (LtCol USAF of 28 years, ret) heard that, she wanted to take the pictures , a video and do a short narration.

It truly was a magnificent day in the NW............. Don would've LOVED it.

The video isn't as good as I would have liked it but this is my first try at it! We took it with my wife's new Samsung Note 3.

This picture is on the running board of the Funeral directors Hummer. We used a metal coffee can to hold the plastic bag containing the ashes.
I printed Dons Avatar on my printer and my wife wrote "RIP DonS" "From all of us @ iBoats" on it.

I have been flying airplanes since I was a teenager so I always seem to put things in an aviation perspective.

I've always like the following poem, so here it is.....Don wasn't a flyer but he was USAF...... Good enough for me!

I hope there's a place, way up in the sky,
Where pilots can go, when they have to die-
A place where a guy can go and buy a cold beer
For a friend and comrade, whose memory is dear;
A place where no doctor or lawyer can tread,
Nor management type would ere be caught dead;
Just a quaint little place, kinda dark and full of smoke,
Where they like to sing loud, and love a good joke;
The kind of place where a lady could go
And feel safe and protected, by the men she would know.

There must be a place where old pilots go,
When their paining is finished, and their airspeed gets low,
Where the whiskey is old, and the women are young,
And the songs about flying and dying are sung,
Where you'd see all the fellows who'd flown west before.
And they'd call out your name, as you came through the door;
Who would buy you a drink if your thirst should be bad,
And relate to the others, "He was quite a good lad!"

And then through the mist, you'd spot an old guy
You had not seen for years, though he taught you how to fly.
He'd nod his old head, and grin ear to ear,
And say, "Welcome, my son, I'm pleased that you're here.
"For this is the place where true flyers come,
"When the journey is over, and the war has been won
"They've come here to at last to be safe and alone
From the government clerk and the management clone,
"Politicians and lawyers, the Feds and the noise
Where the hours are happy, and these good ol'boys
"Can relax with a cool one, and a well-deserved rest;
"This is Heaven, my son -- you've passed your last test!"

AND DonS!

Best Regards to all,

Rick & Rainie.

Re: Don S Final arrangements

Wow... truly amazed by the benevolence of the iboats team in providing dignified and proper arrangements for Don's final rest... I just realized he sent me a PM 2 days before he passed. Helping others until the very end.... What a legacy...

Now that the Oracle by the Sea has been returned to the Sea, may he truly rest in peace!
