Re: Deck coating

Like I said, it depends on the type of roller you use and the timing of the roll out. If you wait till it starts to tack up you can make it pretty rough if you use a thick napped roller. You can practice on some plywood and see the different kinds of effects you can produce.

Re: Deck coating

Hello everyone I have a ?
I bought this boat this past summer and I can not stand the coating on the deck I believe it was brushed on,you can see the brush marks. I plan on sanding it down and coating it with something else recommendations would be appreciated

So you don't know which boat it is.? It looks a lot like the cobia sun skiff I am currently redoing, check it out, http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/cap-deck-out-628974.html#post4416295.

I am pretty sure it was all gel coat inside. I am almost ready to install the deck. The sides with remaining gel coat will get scuffed and the whole inside will be coated with interlux bright side, off white.

Re: Deck coating

Thanks CobyAhh I do know the make of the boat its a 1988 Traveler 1900-CC I just meant I had a question but after going back and reading my original post I see how you thought that .
It is amazing how close are boats are to one another one difference is the 2 blocks in there rear you said yours were foam filled mine are open battery and wiring on one side fuel on the other. And I do not have what I think they call a splash well

Thanks wood What I have going in my head will be smooth up the sides gunwales and texture on floor. I am sure the blue on the boat is paint as there is some flaking here and there also on console I will post up some more pictures

Paint over the original gelcoat & this crack:

Suggest all is not as it should be below decks. Perhaps not soft or rotted, but that crack looks like a telegraphed crack along a plywood patch panel possiblly from an improperly done repair.

I agree.

That crack is and has been a point of water intrusion and I'd bet there's wet plywood decking in that area.

I took the boat to weigh scale and weighed the boat and according to what boat is suppose to weigh its off about 80lbs. So I am assuming the foam is fairly dry. I know what happens when we assume

80 lbs. is how much 10 gallons of water weighs.

Have you done any drilling to check for rot?

Jigngrub I have not done any drilling I had thought no soft spots no rot. I plan on doing some sanding this afternoon when you say drilling where should I drill

Re: Deck coating

On my tri-hull, the floor was 100% solid and the stringers were mulch. Water got below decks and sat. The underside of my floor was just like the day they put it in ironically. Just as jigngrub is implying, you never really know what you have until you look. That's what's so frustrating.
Did you ever really come to a conclusion on what you have as far as paint, etc? It's hard to tell in pics but did you reach a point where the paint stopped and the gelcoat started? I see the resin layer in pic #4 (pc220011.jpg).

Is there any chance it does not have gel coat just paint

Re: Deck coating

I find it strange that the inner compartments(which surely have NOT been redone) are the same exact style and pattern of topcoat. I can't answer the paint vs. gelcoat but this is strange. Have you googled other boats of the same make/year? Call the manufacturer maybe? Try some lacquer thinner if you already have some in the shop... I think that Acetone is being suggested around here because it is used largely, in fiberglassing circles. Lacquer thinner is harsher on resins so keep an eye on it. I am correctable however. :)

Make it Swiss cheese Minch!... just kiddin'.

Seriously though, I'd take a screwdriver and pick at those cracks to check for delamination of the fiberglass from the decking and also to check for wet decking underneath. If you find wet or bad stuff move back about a foot (toward the transom) and drill a hole to check to see how far it goes back.

The thing about those cracks is, a properly glassed in deck won't crack like that. A previous owner has probably been there before you and either done some patch work or has replaced the decking and didn't glass it in properly... and that's where the crappy deck paint job came from too.

If you don't find bad stuff (I'll be surprised if you don't) any exploratory holes and picked out spots can be easily filled and faired before you put your deck finish on.

Since your boat is "new to you" I'd drill the transom too, just to make sure.

Re: Deck coating

Actually the inner compartments were redone same as deck. The layer under the top is more of a grey then a white with a nicer splash pattern more consistent.
The company traveler out of Tifton Ga is long gone and I have not found to much info on the boat

Re: Deck coating

Hmmm...good then, that grayish white may be your Gelcoat. Every poorly done resto has story markers. That makes sense that the previous owner tried to emulate something similar. You have a couple of spots to check. I'd sand just to that layer so that you can test the grayish white, the white and blue speckle, then do everything jigngrub suggested.

Re: Deck coating

Here are some pictures of the cracks after i ground them down I am assuming that is resin As I was sanding on the floor there was none of the gray speckle finish that there is on the sides. So I think someone redid the floor in the past.
those 2 areas or on opposite sides of the boat

Re: Deck coating

The shavings look like good wood, but some of them look damp/wet.

I can't really tell if your deck is glassed in or not from the pics, but if it does have some glass on it... it's a poor and weak job and doesn't have enough (and that's why you have the cracks) and certainly isn't a factory or standard glass job.

For me, the above would be a red flag... and I wouldn't be able to stand knowing I got PO sloppy seconds without lifting the decking to see what evils lurk below.

Did they just throw new decking down on top of rotten stringers?

Did they remove all the old wet floatation foam and just screwed 2x4's to the sides of rotten stringers and didn't put new foam in?

What has been done to my boat???
