What is the purpose of having a "hook" in the boat hull. I have wonder that
and was interested in knowing why would you put "hook" in a hull that you would think should be flat and smooth.

Re: Boat Hull question

In most cases, there shouldn't be a hook in the bottom of a planing hull. Some have a minor hook, either from manufacturing defect, or to help the hull run more level. A hook will push the bow down, making the boat more level at speed, but it hurts overall speed, and can make for a wet ride. A very slight hook just forward of the transom is common, because of the way fiberglass shrinks as it cures. I've seen a lot of boats that have developed a hook from incorrect storage or trailering, or from damage.

i think he means a hook down at the transom. I akways understood that was caused by improper storage, and wasn't always a bad thing.

I doubt it m8.. Storage has nothing to do with glass slipping..

Fiberglass does not move unless under pressure.. there has to be a reason for the hook.. not in manF. and not in storage .

Corner radi would have a hard time warping without some serious cracks in the gel..

Re: Boat Hull question

I will try to get pics. The boat is a 72 LO-PRo Sidewinder 16ft. I might have used the wrong word. I have heard these called hooks. It is towards the bow right where the front bottom trailer roller is. I though the boat actually was diffective. I have pushed on it an it is hard as a rock and actually looks like it was made this way. Like Mushcreek said maybe to help keep the bow down as there is not a lot weight to these boats. But if you get it up on a plane I would think that spot would be out of the water. Make any since?
