Made the trip yesterday ... left at 9pm Wednesday, drove out 80 and pulled in to Greeley last night at 8PM. Yelled hello to many of you as we drove by. Definitely made decent time. Getting ready to finish the last leg of the journey ... through the Rocky Nat'l Forest ... to the final destination. Season starts on Saturday ... hopefully we will have pictures. 8 of us made the trip, so we should have lots of chances.

I'd love to see some photos - I called that area home for a while. Miss it big time.

Art, you should have called me. I'd have lent you my brand new Yeti.;) Be careful and have a GREAT time. I'm jealous. Not a huge hunter, but I'd have a ball just being out there.

I'm here, I didn't have any luck in my abbreviated hunt (Freaking work), so I'm just waiting for Art to call and hopefully we will go to dinner.

But in case you guys were wondering what Heaven looks like....

Well, after a bit of touch and go, they opened Rte. 34 just for us (while we were talking with the ranger) and the newbies to CO loved the trip through.

Day 1 of the hunt has come and gone ... I didn't see anything till 6pm, then there were about 20 elk around me. 2 shooter bulls, but none presented a shot. One was standing broadside at 342 yards, but the shot was too risky with the low light conditions.

We have 1 Mulie and one Cow Elk hanging from Day 1.

We are hunting in 131 and 15. Seeing lots of mulies and antelope, but the elk are a bit more scarce than usualy. Weather is WAY to warm ... was in the 70's yesterday sitting on my rock at 7900 ft. Snow and cold weather is predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday ... bring it on!

A big ol' mulie would be nice too. So what's the minimum on the elk you'd take, 5x5?

Got a cow tag & a bull tag, so the cow will be dropped at first chance. The bull gets smaller with each day. ;)

Re: Colorado Elk ....

Ok Art here you go, the colder weather you wanted is on its way expect snow, but accumulations will be light(by Colorado Standards), I would expect about 20 degree drop in temps from today to Tuesday afternoon so Wednesday looks good but Thursday looks better, Monday however will likely be the hottest day of the hunt so your looking at tough hunting.

If the Low pressure system due Tuesday Afternoon slows down any then accumulations will increase dramatically, but right now its expected to fly through the state until it clears the divide and then it will hit a High pressure dome and that will slow it down so on this side of the divide we could see 6" to 10" of accumulations by Late Wednesday in Douglas County while low temps will be in the teens and twenties.

I would advise you guys to get your scouting done tomorrow as the next couple days are likely to have the animals sitting down waiting out the weather but be ready as afterwards they could start moving hard, the barometer will be all over the place this week so you guys will have to stay on your toes, your going to have mixed weather and mixed hunting, should be fun!!

Re: Colorado Elk ....

Didn't notice you were short ... I was huffing and puffing making my uphill climb! LOL!

Did get a small mule deer buck yesterday (3 point, but heavier rack ... not big by mule deer standards, but mulies don't get huge here, and we wanted to make sure we had some meat for the freezer. Some of the guys headed to Steamboat in the evening, some of us kept hunting ... got another 4 point mulie.

Rain and snow today and tonight. weather forecasts are all over the place, so we will see what will happen. Animals should be moving today!
