Ok If the central channel is to be left open then I can see the benefit. My opinion is...If the deck is installed, sealed and maintained properly, no water should get below. There is the chance of an exterior breach but in those cases repairs and removal of any water would be fairly quick and no chance for the water to do any damage. Just an Old Dumb Okies ramblings!!!

Yes sir, we are definitely on the same page! No foam in the center of the boat, same as factory. The pipe will allow water to move from the ski locker through the bulkheads aft. It'll make more sense when I notch them at each bulkhead......atleast that's what a dumb pennsyltuckian thinks, ha ha.

Took care of some filets while waiting for the transom PB to cure. I'll be doing some 1708 glassing tomorrow. I'm at 1-13/16" thickness with what I have now. Looking good.

Chuck;

Permission to tag along the remainder of your build? (it's just like me to show-up when all the hard work is done).

I remain in awe of you boat re-builders...I'm fairly crafty and can fix just about anything (at least that what my kids think?), but if I'm being honest, there's no way I'd tackle a new substructure and floor in a boat...so, my hat's off to you and others of your kind!

I entertained picking up Chaparral (2008 220SS, if I remember correctly). Thru all my research, Chaparrals were right at the top of a short list of manufacturers I'd entertain. They have nice lines and use better than average components. In the end, Cobalt won out; albeit a few years older as that's what the pocket book would allow.

Also on your statement that
"...a family that fiberglasses together stays together"
...your doing it wrong, fiberglassing goes in the boat :D

Keep on keeping on...at this rate you'll be in ready for boating season before boating season is ready for you!

Cheers,

~Brett

Thanks Brett, glad to have you join the restoration. Like you, Chap was at the top of my list. That hasn't changed since I've been working on her. I'm improving some of the short comings in the boat that the factory did as I go. Should be a lot better boat when I'm done. Welcome aboard!!

I just have to say, 1708 is awesome. I didn't know enough to use 1708 on my last boat, but it certainly makes layups so much easier. This is especially true around the multiple angles and curves of the transom.

I test fit and trimmed the 1708 dry before wetting it. The wet out was pretty easy and I used just a few ounces over a quart.

While I had some resin left over I built up an area previously ground down by the bilge plug. I also made some hairy PB and filled the outside strakes that were originally filled with wood. I also needed to patch a few thin spots......ok, sawzall penetrations. Lol.

Nice!! FYI when you do your stringers the fillets don't have to be that big. Just enuf to make a coved joint to let the glass take the curve.

Thanks WOG.

Got the second layer of 1708 in. This time it fought a little harder, but I won! Transom done.

I had a little time today before the Super Bowl so I worked on fitting the bulkheads. I got the scribing to the final cut. I made a fixture to hold them in place so I can cut the deck height. Once I have the height on all three I can start on getting the stringers shaped.

Got the third bulkhead finalized tonight. Also built the fixture out of 2x4s to hold all the bulkheads in place so I can shape the stringers. I'm planning on slotting the bulkheads and stringers to accept each other and make a strong frame. Once done, the stringers and bulkheads will support each other and the whole frame will stand on its own. This will let me bed everything at once.

This isn't the way it was built from the factory, but it should be extremely strong this way. The additional bulkhead can't hurt either. I also leveled the boat tonight before making the final bulkhead height cuts. I'm using 1/4" thick UHMW spacers to keep the wood off the fiberglass hull. They are glued onto the plywood using PL.

Good ideal on slotting the bulkheads to the stringers. Will have to try to remember that for my next one.

Stringer Fabrication- Boat building is really fun for me since I kind of liken it to strategic building. I look ahead far enough to plan my next few moves, so they are in keeping with long term goals. Short range plans can change slightly so long as they meet the strategic milestones. Much of my detail plans for stringer fabrication have changed over the course of this build, but I'm happy with the results so far. Anyway......enough rambling.

I have to make each stringer in two pieces due to the length. I am using the center bulkhead as my support member when sistering the stringers together.

I used some leftover foam sheets to scribe a template. Both sides of the hull were close enough that I could use one template for both stringers. I took the bulkheads back out and cut my slots to receive the stringers. I also notched the stringers to receive the bulkheads. Both stringer sections were dry fit with out much trimming. Each half stringer is a little over 8' long.

All in all I am very pleased with the fore half of the stringers. I predict a lot of fiber glassing in my future....lol.

Looks great, nice job on the stringers and bulkheads. I really like how you notched them so they hold each other in position.

Aft half of the stringers done. Time to coat and glass all the pieces. Might be a little too cold in the garage this weekend. We shall see.

Got all the bulkheads and stringers leveled. I marked everything so it will go back together the same. I pulled everything out and got a layup of 1.5 oz CSM on one side of the bulkheads. The plywood I used for the stringers has fiberglass and gelcoat on both sides already. I'll just need to rough it up and clean it a little.
