Assuming the engine really is putting out 5000 RPM and that the gear ratio or prop pitch has not been changed your only possibilities are:

Spun coupler
Spun Prop Hub
Prop Ventilation
Stripped splines/gears

I don't think a spun prop or coupler would last in that state for more than a second or two before giving out completely. I also don't think the prop would move at all if your splines or gears were stripped which means either your prop is ventilating, your gear ratio has changed, the prop pitch has changed or your not doing 5000 RPM.

Get a Mercruiser manual appropriate for your engine/outdrive and carefully walk through the troubleshooting guide! ONEBADBUSA makes me think that you might own a Hayabusa. My 2002 is a Bonneville veteran and managed 191.206mph in stock form in 2004 for a class win. It is also nasty bad on track days where it trounces Gixxers with wild abandon on the 135 mph back straight of the Portland International Raceway road course while keeping up with the squids in the corners. Back to the boat, if your turning 5 grand and the outdrive isn't making a lot of gawd awful noise, the spun prop hub makes the most sense. Yer boat ain't gonna do 0 to 100 in 5.2 seconds like the 'Busa.

I think it's the coupler. After it spins the alignment tool will slide in and out without a problem. Put the engine in gear, put a socket over the hub nut and use a breaker bar and try to turn over the engine. I bet the shaft will sping inside the coupler.

I agree. Then again I usually do agree with a fellow Mopar man. :)

Had same issue with my 22ft Pride searaider, was hitting over 5000 revs on tacho. max speed was 18 knots. ended up being the prop was too small. try a bigger prop or higher pitch. I only picked up another 5 knots top end but revs now sit at comfortable 4800. You mention that it sounds like the motor is on the limiter. This to me sounds exactly what mine was doing.

With the engine off and your throttle Wide open can you get any more movement on the linkage at engine?
Try a different tacho to be sure.

How did you grease the U-Joints and the splines?

I'm sorry guys I never came back on to read this. I sold the Busa and bought a Harley a few years ago. I went and put the drive back on Saturday and prepped for bottom paint. There was ample grease on the spline and u joints but yes I should have cleaned and applied new. I will be back down there this weekend and will try the breaker bar on the prop nut while someone watches for the Serp belt to turn. I agree with the coupler but am preying it is not that and just something simpler that pulling the motor again. Thanks for all the help. I really appriciate it. I don't have another Thou to break out if you know what I mean. I have a price of $258 for the new coupler.

Well this is another one for the books. I launched the boat on Saturday with 3 of my friends as witnesses. As soon as I was out of the wake zone area I gave it full throttle and the thing just jumped out of the water and planned like it was new. No idea what happened but it was a good day for the Larson. Thanks for all your suggestions, time, and help. Hope you all have a great boating season in 2013

Me too... what a let down. A boat that just fixed itself... wish mine would fix itself and i could just watch and drink beer. Something doesn't add up tho.

That's exactly how mine breaks itself. I'm pretty sure it has broken itself, sitting on the trailer, while I was having a beer.

Hmmm. Maybe :noidea:

Either a fake troll problem or operator error on the initial problem... I'm thinking the latter...

Agree and agree.

Also, I think it's possible that he had a "temporary" obstruction on the bottom of the boat that was causing severe ventilation. Put it in reverse, hard, and try it again in forward... works like a charm, sometimes! ;)
