Pointer,

I had a hard time sticking to my vow to listen for a week. I was driving around with my jaw on the floor. I'm not even thinking about children and BTW I softened my quotes above for two reasons. 1) I couldn't remember them exactly . . . and 2) I wanted to be taken seriously. What you heard is exactly what I heard with the exception of Ed Schultz. I have to say this guy at least attempts to be taken seriously . . .

Medved is a close second to Prager for me. Both clear and usually unemotional thinkers.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

JK,

My original point on the environment is probably the weak link in this sub-discussion of ours. We kinda got off the point, which was that I would reconsider my position on the environment if I heard some legitimate arguments about the amount of money, regulation etc. that we spend on it. If you lean left you can bet that those who you elect will focus as much or more attention on the environment than crime, fighting evil etc. I'm into ranking things as far as their priority to me. I don't want enviro stuff rolled back, but I definitely don't want more attention on it. We got kinda weird when you said that we disagree (at least I thought you did) No harm no foul, I understand that you were not disagreeing with their relative importance, just that the environment is a bigger deal to you than it is to me. That's very OK

BTW, I am not a big Global Warming guy. Think it's carp. Al Gore thinks that the biggest threat to us is the internal combustion engine  Basically, that says to me that he thinks the damage we are doing to the environment is a bigger deal than fighting evil. The irony is that I actually benefit financially from Global Warming. The product I sell is subsidised by the Aussies and the Brits for reducing Greenhouse Gasses. I do believe that most measures to fight Global Warming are good anyway, most reduce our dependence on oil . . .

Gotcha....& not to get off topic, I must admit that I don't like how "W" has eroded some of the measures that were in place before he came to office.....I do think global warming is B.S., btw.....Imho, enough trees were getting hugged before he was elected, & I don't want to see that go away....I think everyone would agree their must be measures in place to ensure you can't do anything you want, especially if it has or will have serious effect on the enviroment....JK

QC, if you really want to see what the other side is thinking, try The Daily Show w/ Jon Stewart (if you can get the Comedy channel). I think you'll find he's intelligent, funny, and tries to be reasonably fair, even if you don't agree with some of his perspectives.

He'll make fun of Dems who do stupid things and tries to present his ideas from a rational rather than an ideologic perspective. Guests have included Bob Dole, the chairman of the republican party (Ken Melhman?), John McCain, Bill O'Reilly, etc. Although he won't let his guests just spit out their talking points and tries to engage them w.r.t. differences of opinion, he treats them with respect.

I think you'd find that a much better (and more entertaining) experiment than listening to Air America.

btw, I enjoy his monologue and the interview; the comedy bits in the middle are so/so from my perspective.

Me, violent? Never. Fussy and Collicky sometimes, definately.. :)

My environmental belief is that our policies need to be adjusted for the technological advancement we have achieved. I see no reason to stay under regulation adopted 20 years ago for a way of life and technology that barely even exists now. Our gas sucker SUVs get far and away superior emissions output and vaguely tolerable fuel economy compared to the equivelant vehicles 20 years ago. I am all for keeping the speckle-throated arse trout from dying off, but I don't want to ride a horse to work to achieve that. I think the best example I can give is what has been going on in my community for the last several years.

We have been trying to get a by-pass built around our city because the highway cuts straight through our town. Logging trucks, pig trucks, chip trucks, motor homes, cars, you name it all struggle through our small town. The proposed by-pass would eliminate this, but the tree-huggers had succesfully blocked the project for years with one frivelous lawsuit after another. The latest was that a pilon would have to be set in the creek, and that some butt trout could be affected. The fact that we have hundreds of vehicles emitting their exahust into our air because of gridlock means nothing compared to a fish that has managed just fine with all the new docks and the marina. One concrete pilon will change nothing. You can't talk to these people. I think the state has decided they are going to build it, and if the huggers try anything again, they themselves will be sued. I would love that.

But, I digress. The hippy tree huggers just get me worked up....

LL,

I have seen a little Stewart and I kinda like him. I think I should watch more to get a lighter side to all of this stuff. At least he is light years ahead of that moron Bill Maher  HE belongs on Air America . . .

Originally posted by eeboater:

3. The reason Liberal Talk Radio doesn't work is because all Liberal arguments are based on emotion rather than fact. It's a plain and simple truth. And in order to make an argument with emotion, you need to have a visual element, something that is obviously missing from Talk Radio. Conservative arguments are presented and followed up with morally and verifiable fact. If Rush is such a horrible, lieing, ***** how come he has been verified to be correct something like 98.5% of the time or something like that? I know I'm not correct that often, are you?
That is toooo funny! Conservatives and liberals all have positions based on both opinion and fact, and the facts are opinions, and that's a fact. In my opinion.

Some liberals and some conservatives use emotional arguments to make their case. Rush Limbaugh makes frequent use of emotional appeals. Nothing wrong with it - but it is what it is.

"If Rush is such a horrible, lying..."; now, you made that up; there's nothing in this thread that even comes remotely close to implying anything like that.

"verified to be correct 98.5% of the time" - that's hilarious. Did you know 78% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

I mean, if Rush is so great, how come he didn't invent the internet? huh? got ya there! :p :p

What is a "morally and verifiable fact" anyway?

Re: Can talk radio change you?

Actually Rush employs an independant verification company to research the accuracy of his facts and if they are found to be wrong he provides retractions. The agency is located in Sacramento. That is where is derives his 98.5% accuracy statement.

Anyone else in the news or entertainment field do anything similiar?

Re: Can talk radio change you?

Me-me, i-i, i know, but after all, it's my opinion:

I tend to listen to talk radio hosts that i agree with mostly. But whereas i agree with most of what he says, i dislike Sean Hanity's show because he often (not always) has a detached approach to the issues that comes-off as "going through the motions" of relaying his conservative minset.

The alter ego of Mr Hanity would be Al Franken.
My point is, no mater who you are, or your socio-political ideology, there is at minimum, one guy on talk radio who's word you can hang your hat on at least 90% of the time.
Mine is Rush Limbaugh. I will not try to defend that statment in this thread. This is because we have had that debate here on the forum, and frankly, i could care less what others think of him, or my listening to his show.

Let those who hang their hat on Al Franken or Howy Stearn 90% of the time ,listen to them. At least when you talk to such a person, you know where they feel at home.
I had a fiend tape an Air America broadcast in it's entirety, as we don't receive it here, so i could form an opinion of it. That was enough.
.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

You mean Limbaugh's best friend since 1950 Tom Sullivan, financial editor for KFBK radio, and KCRA television? Sacremento talk show host? Occasional stand-in host on the Rush Limbaugh show?

guys, I hate to burst your bubble, but I'm "almost always right 98.5% of the time", so are you, so is a broken clock. :) In fact, I'd have to say I'm almost always right 100% of the time. Even when I'm wrong, I'm almost right. :D :D

It's a clever slogan, nothing more.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

jtexas,

You are currently 0 for 1. 0% accuracy. Rush was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on January 12, 1951. Please tell me how he became best friends with Sullivan before he was even born?
