Medoc (Mr. Kopec),

No. Many left leaners believe that the environment is the most important thing facing us (just ask Al Gore). Global warming, cancer causing stuff in the air, water pollution etc. I am just making the point that the environment is not as important an issue as protecting children from starvation, evil, abuse etc. Some say it is numero uno. You are never going to hear that from me.

Yes, I think you are more conservative than you may believe. I believe that many are afraid to say it as they equate conservative with mean and selfish.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

interesting experiment, QC. congrats on sticking it out.

My guess is the station you're listening to can't change you because it has no credibility with you, it's not giving you rational reasons to want to change.

But could it move a liberal farther to the left, or could Rush move a republican farther to the right; if you agree in principle with the substance of their message, are you prone to believe what they say to the exclusion of any other source?

You should try NPR, it'll be more of a challenge. ;)

btw, if you really want to wonder where you might have stood in Nazi Germany, the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington has a whole section on newspapers, newsreels, how the Nazi propaganda machine worked. interesting stuff.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

I've listened to mpr for years, and it hasn't changed me a bit. Some times it makes me laugh out loud while I'm driving down the road. But it's always good to know what the other side is doing or saying. Know thy enemy.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

jtex,

Thanks for your comments. L.A. has the Museum of Tolerance which is VERY good and VERY moving. It is a Simon Wiesenthal Center creation. I agree, very enlightening stuff. I learned of the Holocaust when I was 4 or 5. My mom caught me drawing a swastika on our toilet (appropriate place for one huh?). I will never forget her reaction and I had questions even then. She said something very simple, "you can tell people they are better than others and they will listen".

First, I am not looking to change necessarily, so you're right, I am damaged goods, but I want to know if I am missing important opinions etc. I see bias in everything I read, listen to and watch. I have read the L.A. Times almost every day of my life since I was 10. I am pretty confident I know how to wade through the crap and get to the story. Generally, I get my news from the paper and my opinion from the radio (here now too), but I question everything. I also have listened to NPR and know of what you all speak.

Along with questioning everything, I question myself and honestly wonder what I would have become had I experienced dramatically different influences. What if I was a kid living in an extremist Islamic household? Would I strap on bombs and rejoice in the opportunity to kill infidels? Those are the things I ask myself. It forces me to be honest and tolerant of others behavior. However, I will always condemn evil, which is what our country experienced on 9/11.

I abhor evil; I want it exposed and I want it crushed. Evil is not an opinion it is real and it is definable. Anything else is a rationalization of evil. I don't accept that.

DC is like a lot of media sources. Opinions might make some wanna puke, sometimes you may agree, the odd time you might gain perspective or learn something. Rarely does one change someone's viewpoint though I doubt. Talk radio/TV certainly can't change mine unless its factual, and I always research/double check important claims with alternative reporting sources.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

A couple things...

1. The whole 'name calling' thing is done specifically for the people who hate to listen to Rush, Hannity, etc. (why don't you guys get it?)

2. The ego thing from all of them is done specifically for the people who hate to listen to Rush, Hannity, etc. (why don't you guys get it?)

3. The reason Liberal Talk Radio doesn't work is because all Liberal arguments are based on emotion rather than fact. It's a plain and simple truth. And in order to make an argument with emotion, you need to have a visual element, something that is obviously missing from Talk Radio. Conservative arguments are presented and followed up with morally and verifiable fact. If Rush is such a horrible, lieing, ***** how come he has been verified to be correct something like 98.5% of the time or something like that? I know I'm not correct that often, are you?

Not only that, Rush has been around for close to 18 years now. That doesn't happen because of "luck" it happens because of skill. Rush started an industry in the United States. An industry of conveying truth to the American people where it had been lacking.

I was a Conservative when I was 16 - something you don't see very much nowadays. Talk radio has a lot to do with the political views I hold today. No, I don't belive everything I hear on the radio, but you know what - what I hear on the radio is usually a lot more correct than what I hear everywhere else.

Sean

Re: Can talk radio change you?

QC, thats a fun experiment isn't it? I have been listening to the Rush/Hanity etc combo pac for a few months now, because I was curious. My end conclusions, after having listened to the lefty and righty talk radio is they basically do the same thing. Righty Radio had the insulting (but kinda funny) commercials and comments aimed at the left, and the Lefty Radio has the same directed at the right. Sitting from what I believe to be as objective a stand as I can, I really would like to tell them all they are blowhards that shoot from the hip, but why bother. In the end they all sound like grade schoolers calling each other poopyheads.

Does talk radio change some people? Absolutely. It is no different than cults or anything else that preys on the weak minded. A well balanced, informed, strong individual can listen to this stuff and see it for what it is, but weak, maleable minds can be turned, and there is plenty of that out there.

Re: Can talk radio change you?

Thanks Jason. I appreciate your response as I see you as a fair minded guy who is really trying to understand many things about life. Understanding them is precisely what we all should do.

I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you try and find Dennis Prager on the radio. I believe he is an exception to the showmanship and name calling and he truly pursues truth for his listeners. His words help many people. A couple of his mottoes:

"I prefer clarity to agreement."

"We discuss everything in life."

"There are only two races, the decent and the indecent" (that one has irked a few here, and for the life of me, I can't understand why other than someone has to define decency)

And one other that I will leave off as it caused you (Jason) to react semi-violently once ;)

I will say that this man has "changed" me. All for the better. He is obsessed with morality and defining right and wrong.

This may sound like a sales pitch and I guess it kinda is. This was NOT the intention of this topic, but seemed timely to mention considering the name calling comments and the belief that these guys are completely partisan. I honestly believe that Prager rises above that, although he will be considered conservative AND he is a registered Republican . . .

http://www.dennisprager.com/

Wow JK. You put Environmental issues ahead of protecting your children from evil? You can't mean that. Is there a disconnect here?

Re: Can talk radio change you?

QC,

I was listening to the Randy Rhodes show on Air America more by mistake or accident than for any other reason and as an open minded guy I listened for a while. It was the most vile, reactionary, disjointed, filthy, unamerican pile of dung, that was so bad it wasn't fit for children to listen to. There was no message other than hate. I am a pretty flexible guy and far from a prude but it was so bad I posted here on I-boats just to warn anyone with children to make a decision before listening. A little research uncovered that this woman actually ran little "humorous" (only to a whack job) faux-commercial suggesting with gunshots that GW be killed. This is a federal crime. I now have greater affinity for howard stern after listening to what this persons message was. Hate.

I have heard all of the names above and the one I like best is Michael Medved. What a mind and open disposition to all points of view. Then there is Al Franken who couldn't even get by the cover of his book without calling names. I have listened to him and if he could conjure up the ghost of Karl Marx he would have him on.

But we have had 35 years of left leaning mass media, and just look around to see how it has affected our society. I would agree that the radio shows pander to their base but I can't see how the Air America network could possibly energize anyone to change their point of view. Most people what to be enlightened not insulted or demeaned.
