Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Hi all..Just had a few days on the water. Arrived in Nevada Thurs around noon. Picked up the boat and went down to Willow Beach with my 2 sons. On the water about 4;00 and fished until 9:00..I never get tired of that beautiful area. Fished down to the Monkey Hole and a bit farther. Fished back up and near the hatchery but caught zero..Trolling and casting big trout plugs can really ware you out..I have a new respect for those that fish at night on the water. The water temp was showing 60 degrees which seemed very warm. Friday morning we are launching at Boulder at 6:00..Water was 80..Fished hard for 3 bass and zero stripers up near Calville. Friday afternoon we went up in the Vegas wash. Very few boats on the water wind coming on..Sat morning another 6:00 launch at Boulder..By 9:30 the wind got to most people and everyone was heading for the ramp...Fishing great but catching was no bueno....see ya next month Lake Mead...Jim.

I agree with jjacobs, just launch at echo.. Are you going to be fishing or just cruising around? I myself will be launching at Echo this Friday morning around 0500 on motor boater, going to be doing a little bass fishing for the first time.

I'm hoping the same..... I've been planning to go out this weekend for a couple of weeks, had to work last weekend when it was really nice weather (figures) , this Saturday was out due to the wind, then my daughter caught a cold which killed the rest of the weekend...

Wind and crappy weather is good for fishing, but not so for swimming and watersports..............

It actually looks like this coming Saturday and Sunday are going to be very nice as far as winds and temps go (with the current forecast) .:)

The stars are still out of alignment for a few more weeks for me...You can find that record Striper though FD.....I'm rooting for you. :fish2:

I saw the nice weather forecast, but of course,,,, I'm working  :mad-new:

I'm hoping for a big striper too... The last couple I've tied into have schooled me, wrapped themselves up in submerged trees or did the good ol' long distance quick release. They didn't get big being stupid, that's for sure.

Fishrdan, im gonna have to hook up with you one of these times when you go striper fishing. Ive yet to catch a striper, EVER.

My luck may get better though from this point on cause I just installed a fishfinder on MB, so now the next time I go out I will finally be able to start fishing the deeper waters and avoid the Coves... I also installed my nav lights bow & stern so I can get out on that water anytime now,, too bad its getting colder now... Oh well, I'll be fishing throughout the whole winter, (im a fishing nutt)

Ohhhh, and I should be getting my new Penn reel with line counter tomorrow. First round reel ive ever bought.. Im stoked.. Now just need a new pole to go with it.

EVER?!?!?!?! :faint2: :scared: That just ain't right! Stripers are all over Mead and (usually) easy to catch if you go out at night with no moon, throw out lights to attract the shad and,,,, ding-ding-ding,,, here comer the stripers. I usually go out of Echo dink striper fishing, find a cove 50-60' deep, anchor up, lights, chum chovies, rig up a couple of rods with bait at different depths... I'll do the same thing open water if I mark fish, but it leaves you exposed if the wind comes up. Of course, some of the best bites I've been in is when the wind is blowing, or if it starts to blow.

Trolling, jigging and casting works too, just have to find them, and hope they are in a biting mood.

Good choice with the Penn, what did you get?

Even this stupid day boater has caught stripers. When I see boils, I throw a jig and often get a hookup.

Sorry :p

I got a Penn 209LC not sure if its good or not, heard Penn makes good reels, but I know nothing about round reels. But it looks awesome, and has a line counter and got it for $50 on Amazon.

QC,, thats awesome, ive been dreaming about spotting a boil someday. Was going to go out this morning but the weather was awful, to much wind for motor boater.

Fishrdan, what kind of lights are you throwing in? What kind of set up do I need? Message me if youd like, and seriously if you ever need a fishin buddy, I'd love to learn some tricks..

209(LC) is a good reel,,, depending on what you're using it for. I have a 309 that I use for lead core and it's good for that. The 209 would be good for trolling and dropping bait, but not good for casting, especially if you haven't used a "round reel" before (backlashes, professional over-run, birds nest). I doubt that reel has any spool control besides spool tension (no brake blocks or mag braking) so it's going to over run easily if the spool is too loose, or if it's tight your casting distance will be low. There are better reels if you want to cast, brake blocks are good, mag braking is better. I learned using baitcasters on a mag braking reel, fast learning curve.

I've used the car headlight lights which worked well, but they suck a ton of power. Then went to florescent lights which didn't put out as much light as I wanted, but used far less battery power (used 3-4 of these). Now, I'm using a home-made high power light, a dozen 4x3W LED spotlights mounted in an aluminum cake pan, all sealed up waterproof. It's friggin bright, can see a gnat munching on a zebra mussel shell 1/4 mile away :D I haven't used the store bought LED lights, but not impressed with their construction.

I'd take you out (used to take others out a lot), but have to much going on, work, family... I haven't even fished much this year, which isn't right...

Let's hope this doesn't happen...

Lake Mead closing...

News article

Political BS might force the closure of national parks, for who knows how long, if it even happens...

take cake pan? That's crazy, and so you just throw it in the water and let it float? I'm going to have to try that out

I didn't tell you that catching stripers was a "piece of cake", did I? :D

A cake pan was the only cheap housing I could find to mount the lights, it worked out well.

Yeah, just throw it in the water, it floats.

Do you put 2 cake pans together? Or just the one and waterpriof the lights? And where did you get your lights from? To bad this weather isn't letting up for me. I just bought a huge saltwater pole, rated for 20-50 lb line. It goes great with my reel.... Anyone else going out this week?

I take that back, the lights were mounted in a piece of sheet aluminum, and the aluminum pan covers everything, sealed up with 5200. Ebay has MR16 12V lights for $3-4 each, from China, might as well cut out the middle man. The lights are not waterproof, but the kind I bought (look like the ones in the link above) have bezels that unscrew, unscrew the bezel, 5200 it and screw the bezel/lens back on. The lights need to be 5200'ed into the cake pan also. Need to use some heavy wire from the pan to battery as 12 of those lights will draw 10 amps or so, I used 12ga wire. This isn't something that you'll slap together in an hour or two....

Anyone else going out this week?

I actually wonder if anyone is going to be able to go to Mead/Mohave later this week, with the possibility of the NPS shutting down.

Wow, what the heck is going on? Why and when is this all expected to take place? "IF" they do decide to go through with it.

Why? Political BS, dem/rep battling over budget. It's against forum rules to discuss politics, so I'm not voicing my opinion, just saying what's causing the potential closure.

When, goooood question?

I called the LMNRA visitor's center, to find out they are only open Wednesday- Sunday (9-4 or something like that). LMNRA's website says they are open 7 days a week, but the recording said otherwise, they were closed when I called today, Monday........

I then called the LMNRA park info desk, and received a recording to leave a message......

Not sure what to think, could go out there to find the lake access road's closed. From the article, it sounds like they are going to deny access to the parks (lake) to preserve their facilities, infrastructure.
