Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Hi Fellow meaders!

I'm a newbie here, this was our first season boating. We got our boat this may and have been out about a dozen times. I wanted to go so bad this weekend, but the weather report was showing thunderstorms. Every time I look out the window it's sunny! it's killing me! but after last weekend, I don't want to chance it.

Last weekend we went out early despite a bad weather report. It was like glass when we got there. For the first time we got the boat up to full speed. We found a nice beach to hand out, and around 11am some bad weather came rolling in. It changed so fast, I've never experienced anything like that! I think my boating skills improved 1000% that day. We packed up quick and got out of there. There were huge swells, water crashing into the boat, smacking me in the face, in the eyes. My adrenaline was pumping, my wife next to me saying "you got this, you got this" Kids and dog in the back all hunkered down, praying. Yeah, I was praying too. It was scary, but my family was counting on me, so I had to stay calm and just go for it. I stood up and started timing the waves instead of trying to fight them. I would give it some gas, reach the top of the swell, and throttle back to give me time to make the next move. I started closing my eyes just before the water would hit me in the face, so I would have a few more seconds of sight. We fought our way back to calville. Once we entered the no wake zone, things calmed way down. We could breathe. The kids were glued to their seats in the back. My boy was ok, he set the dog down and started getting ready to dock. But my daughter was in a state of shock. She started balling, she was so scared.

Well, I thought I better not risk it this weekend, but looking outside and seeing the sun shining, knowing I only have a few more lake weekends left, is killing me.

Did you guys have a good time out there? How was the weather?

Welcome aboard fulano!

Sometimes you have to run for cover instead of fighting mother nature. We went out last Saturday and when the wind started to kick up around 11, we found a protected cove to hang out in for a couple of hours. I tied off to a couple of huge rocks and let the kids play in the water until the lake settled down, around 3.

At least you got some experience dealing with Mead during a big blow, read back through the entire thread, everyone has "their" story.

Oh yeah, the lake could still be nice up until the end of October, depends on how the weather holds.

I'm so glad we went out this week, we had been keeping an eye on the weather all week and Saturday was looking grim. We launched Saturday morning, went straight for TBar. Beached on a little sandbar in the middle of the lake, blue skies, sunny, hot all day.. beautiful.

We headed back in late in the day, soon as i hit the narrows the clouds and weather were looking ****ty.
We beached @ Sandy and i asked a few people if the weather had been crappy all day and they said it was overcast and humid.. We didn't have that problem @ Temple Basin :D and of course Sunday was another gorgeous day. The weather could not have been better this weekend IMO. Very pleased.
Very few people in Temple Basin, definitely one of my new favorite hangout spots.

Was out there I think in 82 when the tornado came thru Henderson saw the water ripple across the lake and hit our boat was trying to pull anchor but wind came to fast pulled up a tree with the anchor. We hot footed it to a cove we new and ran the boat up on the shore lightning and thunder all night was beautiful and a little scary but the next morning was the best. We did have a vhf radio on board and rangers where saying do not try to come in find safe shelter till winds pass thru we did.:fear:

Oh man! you're so lucky. I had been looking forward to this 3 day weekend since Monday, then slowly watched the weather report go bad. Decided not to chance it, but looking back I could have gone out and just stayed close, like lover's cove or something. Oh well, lesson learned I guess! I'm glad you got to enjoy it :)

Hey, I've been meaning to ask you guys; are there any good beaches to camp out at? I'm trying to convince the Mrs to do an overnighter. :ballchain:

Memorial this year? Big water, only time this year I've taken a little spray in the face :D

Yeah I bet that's nice. We braved it in a 18 foot 4 banger. It was more like surfing than boating. A couple times I heard the prop come out of the water! :plane:

In bad situtions like that, i was always off the water before it hit me,and as i was setting up my tent at campground the camp host would come by and let us know of the danger coming our way,As i would be cinching down the knots as if i wasnt worried, knowing what could have been much more worse if i was still in my boat out there. If you ever get in there situation, dont just sit there and brave it out! find a cove with less wind and then drop anchor.Maybe if your in a house boat or something big you wont have the time too.ALWAYS be aware of the sky above and beyond you.Even as i fished back in coves far away from marinas i was always thinking about what the fish would bite and also keepng one eye and ear to the future so i would be able to make it back to the marina.

Jeez, that weather makes me glad that I was up in Tahoe all week. That storm looked mean.
