Transom height is 21 inches. Width is 69 at the top and 59 at the bottom

21" transom height rules out Jet/Jetstar. In earlier post posts I crossed Stardust/Starmist. STARMIST, unless it's a Jupiter.

Jupiter is 16' 2 and a bit " long. Transom width is 59 5/8" - I don't know if that is top or bottom, the brochures don't say.

Starmist is 15' 11.5" long Transom width is 56", top or bottom - ???? You have the right color for a Starmist.

When you get a chance, can you get the beam at the widest point? Jup is 76", Starmist is 69"

Lastly from the floor to the gunnel - Jup is 32", Starmist is 28 1/2"

I know I'm being anal about this, but I want to know too.

Re: Bought starcraft boat from auction, unable to determine year or model.

Walked out this morning and forgot to measure. I know what the beam is but what is a gunnel. Also has anyone had any luck as to finding a good Bemini top that fits nice in the starcraft. Still trying to figure out what to do with the windshield. It's not broken but has a lot of cracks in it. I'm also missing the part that holds it down in the corner on the right side. Any other ideas on a windshield. Has anyone tried to bend there own?

Gunwale~gunnels are the side walls of the boat and some refer to the flat part at the top as The gunwale (me included), but I'm pretty sure its the thwart:

Many have built their own. Andgott has a pretty good windshield build tutorial around here somewhere. Someone should ask for it to be added to Don's helpful how too's... <<-I'm on it. A new windshield for an old boat...

BGC is attempting to mold his own currently & has a thread. In it I posted the text of a windshield build and if anyone wants a copy, just PM me your address.

There's also a link to another site's tutorial listed in his thread.

Here's another build

Once you know the max beam of the boat, you can get a bimini top. SigSaur order one pretty inexpensive off ebay, I think. Several others have as well.

Hey guys. I got the beam measured, again this is by myself. I'm coming up with 76 inches. This is just a bit behind the windshield.

Like I've saying all along, you have a Jupiter. :embarassed: I was hoping for a Starmist, which would be a first in the drydock. Jups are good boats.

Lol. Thanks for all the help. It's good to know what I have for sure. Do you think this boat is way under powered with only a 40 hp motor on it.

I think a 40 is perfect for it and it has to be close to the max rating as well.

If it's a Jupiter @16ft+/-, it should be rated for up to an 85hp.

Being a lightweight tin boat, a 40 might get you where you're going w/ plenty of time to enjoy the ride.

Does anyone know what kind of speed I can expect now that we know what boat I have and motor size. Hoping to be able to pull a tube or a skier. Is this possible or out of the question.

tubes yes

How big a skier? Kids pop outta the water QUICK. I might drown well before I'd come up on a single ski, and still might on 2.

Think cruiser, not speed boat w/ the 40, IMO.

Probably not so much a skier. But my wife and once my baby gets older on a tube. No more then 130 lbs. does anyone think this boat will run 30 mph?

Might PM Rayzor, he asked the same 40hp on a 16ft'r question:
[h=1]40 horse on 16SS[/h]
He hasn't logged on to iboats since Sept, so he may or may not respond to a PM.

Looks like Jas & Chief mostly agree w/ my assessment. It'll move ya, and depending on passenger & weight load, it'll likely get on plane. Its just not a speed boat.

Another factor is power tilt n trim. Most 16 AL's are rated around a 70 HP, anything more than that and the motor weight gain becomes significant over a twin cylinder 40 or 50 HP.

This boat doesn't have any power trim. Is this something I should try and get it not to worry about it

Personally I just can't imagine not having a TnT. It makes launching and retrieving the boat way less risky as far as striking the bottom with the prop. You can lower the motor down for pulling out of the hole and trim it up when on a plane to get the most out of your motor. It also takes away the problem of steering torque pulling the wheel too.

Is this something that would of been on the boat originally. Are all you guys on here with starcraft putting power tilt/trim on your boats or just using them the way they came?

Re: Bought starcraft boat from auction, unable to determine year or model.

If you are upgrading the HP, just keep an eye out for a motor w/ T&T. They still sell OB's w/out it....

It's a matter of your preference. Can you buy & use a car w/out power windows & doors? Yep, but isn't it nice to have? Is it worth the expense, to you?

Adding a CMC power bracket will net similiar results if you'd rather retro fit a motor that didn't come w/ T&T.

Depending on the motor you buy, you might get a non-T&T OB, and add it if there's a T&T model that will adapt to your OB. I bought a factory T&T setup off a Mercury OB (don't remember year or model) that would easily adapt to my 1971 Merc 650, that didn't come with it.

Several have done similar. Off hand the last 2 I KNOW did are Jas' adding factory Johnson T&T to his Jet's OB, the blk & wht boat he sold a while back, and PMCCraney using a CMC bracket on his Sea Nymph. I think they both bought the T&T off ebay.

T&T or a CMC bracket is often part of the loot stolen off a donor boat, so while looking for windshield candidates, you might find buying an entire donor boat is the right decision. Esp if you can sell any bits & pieces or trailer if you don't need them.
