Yea, I was thinkin that half way into the trip: "Man this is a LONG way!" Once you hit the bush river, you are pretty much there, since the Bush, Gunpowder and Middle river are right next to each other, but its a long way from the sand island to pooles island, where the bush and gunpowder meet.

We saw about 3 apg partol boats anchored out on the boundries of the restricted area. I wanted to hug the western shore, but had to go around the other side of pooles island. they were shooting some really big bombs over near the shoreline. It almost sounded like thunder at first.

Glad you made it OK. Why didn't you sail?
FYI- just because the APG boats were out doesn't mean the restricted zone was closed to the public.
One of my old slip-mates is an APG boat captain, and he would often tell me how he WISHED boaters would contact them if they were crossing the area. They actually WANT people to call them if there's any question!
The patrol boats are manned ONLY by private contractors, not military or law enforcement personnel.
They have no arrest powers.

Here's a PDF of the APG Boaters Guide. Good thing to keep onboard if you run thru that area.
http://www.apgmwr.com/images/recreation/boatersguide.pdf
This is pulled from it:
"Entrance into the restricted waters for navigational purposes during periods of
testing/training may be permitted if an entrance clearance can be secured by
contacting an APG patrol personally or via VHF marine channel 68. APG's
Range Operations may also be contacted at
410-278-3971/2256."

I tried to contact them on Ch 16, but i didn't get a reply. I did a radio check later, and got a response, from someone who sounded like law enforcement. But I'm not too sure about how well my radio is working. I'll try 68 next time.
I think i saw a few bombs hit the shoreline, I don't think we wanted to be anywhere near the mouth of the bush river.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

It looks like we are going to head out tonight to the boat and shove off with the morning light for the run to HDG first thing Friday morning. Want to catch high tide and as much slack tide as possible. Weather looks to be good with seas 1 to 2 feet. Figure this is my best chance. We are going to run straight to Tydings and not overnight. Chance of storms Friday night and I know my wife would rather be tied to the dock for that. Plus I want to make sure that I have plenty of time to get her secured in the new slip.

Sadly we will have to head out Saturday morning by 8:30 as my wife has a work event during the day. We have some Sunday morning commitments so not sure if we will make it back to the boat this weekend of not.

Should have lots of great pictures by Sunday for everyone!

Good luck with the trip. I think you're well prepared.
Sorry I'll miss you this weekend.
Once you shove off, don't be in a rush. Follow your course and confirm your position on paper charts.
If you need a break, I'll recommend Summit North Marina. Nice place to gas up and stretch your legs.
We stayed there overnight enroute to CM.

Yea, Summit North is an awesome place. There are some 5 Million dollar boats there, maybe 100 ft long.
It's the only marina in the middle of the canal. Short of the basin in chesapeake city.

Hey Arks,
I think I figured out who to tie up to a fixed dock. Basically leave slack in every rope, and your boat will be able to move a few feet in every direction, just make sure it won't hit anything in those few feet. is that the trick?

Well pretty much, but IMO it's best to tie up at high or low tide then hang around for 6 1/2 hours to see how she's doin'. By doing this you can adjust the lines to keep her in the 'sweet spot'.

So where's Brandon???? Thought by now we'd all be immersed in the fine details of his voyage from Cape May!
I CAN tell everyone that they DID succeed, because he texted me Friday evening after arrival in Havre de Grace.
Hopefully everyhing went well and Christina is still talking to him.....;)

Here's a shot I took of the Cape May canal about 6 hours AFTER they passed. It was a PERFECT day for a cruise. Saturday wasn't!

So sorry for the suspense guys. Had a 21 hour work day yesterday and a 16 hour day today. Should be able to post tomorrow night as it should only be a 13 hour day.

I promise it will be a good update :)

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Alright, here is the long awaited update! It's been a crazy week so I apologize for keeping you guys in suspense!!

Well, it all started off on Thursday morning. To start off the story, you need to know one detail, my wife is in a Grand Jury every Thursday in Philadelphia and she commutes there by train. So around mid morning, I sent her a text that said, do not get the train home, instead, meet me at 30th street station. She was very confused and didn't understand what was going on, but finally went along with it. She knew that we were going away for the day, but didn't know where or when. So then I caught the train to Philadelphia and met her at the station. Needless to say she was very confused and asked all kinds of questions. She wanted to know where we were going and when we would be back. I didn't tell her much, just that we were catching a bus to the next destination. Grabbed a cab to the bus station and killed an hour until departure.

Bus ride went well, but seemed to take forever. During the ride, she figured out that we were headed to a Wildwood NJ, pretty easy to do as the tickets had the destination on them. The whole time she was trying to figure out where we were going to stay. It was bugging her like crazy. Finally she figured out that we were going to stay on a boat. (I made a comment that we weren't spending any money on lodging) luckily she assumed that we were staying one of my "Internet friends" boats.

So we pulled into the wildwood bus station and walked about 1/2 a mile to the marina. It was dark so she didn't really get to see the boat when we got to it. Once she saw me step onto it, she immediately knew it wasn't someone else's boat. She was very shocked and not the happiest at first. It took her quite awhile to take it all in. We talked about the whole purchase, when it happened, etc. she wanted to know all of the details. Finally we headed to bed, she still wasn't sure what to think.

We awoke in the morning to fog thicker than pea soup. Visibility less than 1/4 mile. So we walked into town and had breakfast. Fog finally started clearing around 10 am se we untied the lines and casted off. Here is a picture of the marina as we left. I was anxious to leave as this place is really falling apart.

As we were heading out, we snapped a few of these pictures. My wife made sure to point this boat out to me.

AngryWife.jpg

As we idled along in the back bays and channels, we were listening to the radio reports of how the fog was out in the bay. It didn't sound to bad, so we kept going. We stopped at Utsch's Marina an topped off the fuel tanks just to make sure that would have plenty.

Went through the canal passing the Cape May and Lewes Ferry docks where we snapped these photos. These boats made me feel so small!

After we turned the corner and past the jetty into the Delaware bay, I eased the throttles forward and she climbed up on plane..... For about 30 seconds. All of the sudden, the port motor started surging and she wouldn't stay on plane. I couldn't understand why as she was running perfect the weekend before! Changed the fuel filter and examined the contents. Looked like there was some water in the filter so I thought that was the problem, tried again and had the same outcome. For the next 45 minutes, I kept fiddling with the fuel lines and changing filters, but I couldn't get it to run for longer than about 2 minutes before it would start sputtering again. During this time, we were continuing ahead on the 1 motor at about 5 mph. I knew it would take 20 hours for the trip at that rate. There was no way that I had the time for that this weekend. First off, the weather forecast for Saturday didn't look that great and I wasn't about to spend the night on anchor in the middle of the Delaware Bay. It wasn't easy, but I had to make a decision, if I didn't have it running well by 12pm, I would turn back. So I went to the bridge and continued on with the one engine as I contemplated the next step of troubleshooting the port engine. My wife went down below and laid down in the front berth for a few minutes. This was not going well, the engine wouldn't run and my wife was getting annoyed and couldn't believe that I bought a boat that wouldn't go above 5 mph. Every second that dragged on, I felt like I would be turning around and heading back to the marina and probably never have my wife step on board the boat again. This wasn't going at all like I had planned and worked so hard to make happen.

To be continued...

can you get on plane with only one engine? or is 5 mph your max on 1 engine?

The story does have a happy ending, right?

Hey Bowman,

First, yes it does have a happy ending! My laptop dies so I will have to do the rest tomorrow. To hard to do it through my phone.

Second, the 5 mph was one engine running 1500 rpm against the current. With these big cruisers with twin engines, you can't plane on one engine. They are propped to work together. Trying to plane on one engine causes it to lug, which can cause serious damage to the engine.

The rest of the story coming soon!

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

It seems almost pointless to have 2 engines, and only be able to get on plane with both working. Maybe it's just not possible to design a boat that big to run on one engine/prop. But it would be nice to be able to plane on 1 engine, just for security reasons. So you don't get stranded out in the middle of nowhere, and have to crawl back at 5 mph.

Wouldn't it be pointless to have two engines if one were capable of getting the boat on plane?
Do you think a four cylinder car engine should be able to push the car to 60mph with only two cylinders working?

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

i guess it's different than having 2 outboards. It sounds like with your set-up, you don't wanna push the one working engine to full thorttle.
Where I think that would be fine if the engines were outboards. But you still might not get on plane.

I tend to think of it less like a car running on half its cylinders, and more like having normal power, and turbo power.
Like a rocket or something. You have the normal speed, then you can turn on the after burners and really take off.

But I guess it's more like a car.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Bowman, I could have pushed it up higher than 1500 rpms as well without any damage. That would have gotten close to 10mph if I wanted. The problem was that I didn't know if I would get it fixed or not, if I did, I wanted some forward progress and to maintain control of the boat. If I didn't and had to turn around, I didn't want to get to far away.

Some people talk about keeping a spare prop with the correct pitch and diameter that you could put on the one working engine to allow it to reach proper wot rpms. Although, I still question the ability of one 350 engine, sitting off centered, getting 12000 + lbs up one plane.

If our Mothers Day plans don't go to late, I hope to have the rest of the update posted tonight!

Well gents we brought the "Luna sea" up the ICW from Oriental NC last weekend it took 3 1/2 wonderful days, its just wonderful in the "ditch" south of Norfolk then the 200 miles of the chessy gets a bit boring. We averaged about 10 knots only because we picked up a trawler that asked if they could tag along, we didn't mind. Only burned around 200 gal of fuel with our twin 471 detriots. It really was a joy can't wait to head south and push in to SC. For the summer we are at Triton as far north as the chessy will let us go. Everyone have a great summer!!!

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

It looks like I'm going to be spending Memorial Day Weekend in and around Hack's Point Marina in Chesapeake City. Any recommendations for good places to hang out? Good places to tow the kids around on the tube?

Here's a couple questions.... In NJ, where I'm from, kids 12 and under are required to wear a PFD while uderway. Is the law the same in MD? Also in NJ, they require you fly an orange flag when towing a skier/tube/whatever... Is there any such law in MD?

Thanks. Also, if anyone is in the area that weekend, I'll be listening on the VHF... Just call "Lottie-Da"

Welcome! The Bohemia itself has some great spots- good tubing above the 213 bridge in the 'Little Bohemia' if you stay in the deep water. There's a nice anchoring spot on the north side just west of the bridge, and in Veasey Cove if the weeds aren't bad...
Cabin John Creek is also a nice little place to hang. It's just south of the Bohemia on the east side.
We had a raftup at Cabin John last year, here's a pic:

Same here as far as kids PFD's. The age was raised from 7 in 2010.
See this: http://dnr.maryland.gov/dnrnews/pressrelease2010/041510c.asp
Also, Maryland does not require the display of an orange flag when skiing or tubing.

Congrats! I did a similar trip in 2004 from Southport NC. I chose to run the Dismal Swamp route. For our trip the Chesapeake was anything but boring- we battled a low pressure system and had to leave the boat in Deltaville for a week until conditions settled. The rest of the run we threaded our way past (and thru) some bad thunderstorms.
Hope to see you out there this summer!
