RatFish. I agree with you.I,ve been there, done that, got a Bayliner. What I can,t get head round is why some people make a joke of the boats we use.Do they have a laugh at the cars we drive, the homes we live in  the list goes on.We don,t all have bulging wallets,no we buy what we can afford and as you said the kids won,t care about the cost,no they will enjoy every moment out there on the water.HAPPY BOATING ;)

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

Dude, no is laughing at you or your boat. It is just personal opinions and sometimes deserved or underserved reputations. Its not the money either. My boat cost $800.00 off of E-bay (must have 10 grand into it over the past 4 years). I wish I had the money for a new Bayliner. Two kids under 4 and being a subcontractor in a down economy there is nothing new in my future unless I hit the lottery and I don't even play.

I sold my 1990 capri, and looked at some of 2004 models at a boat show, I also looked at some used ones ,seems around 1997-98 you could start noticing quality improments. no more laminated chipboard doors, and they got away from viynl covered quarter inch plywood bulkheads in the cockpit.98 and on sierra is a nice boat for the money.I bought the bayliner I just sold in 1993 for 11,000 cdn,and sold it 2 months ago for 6800$ Other than relacing fasteners that rusted, and popped out I had no prolems you would"nt expect from any other boat.Buy what you can afford and don't worry about impressing people on the forum.I'd rather be on a bilgeliner (that one's for you Bondo)then sitting at listening to my wife nag about yard work.
P.S seems everyone has a strong oppinion about bayliner, Its always ammusing to read the the posts,If I were you I'd take the advise of people who have owned one.

jim

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

Well I own a Bayliner. Yes, it's MY first boat. MY boat are the important 2 words there. It's a 1988 that I bought on a whim for $1200 with trailer. Hull is in great shape, floor is in great shape (no soft spots). The engine was another story, but 7 months and $1700 later ($2900 total investment so far, including boat, trailer, new 2002 engine and manifold) I have a good boat that will get me, my friends and my family out on the lakes and the bay here in NJ.

Yeah it's a bayliner, and having grown with a dad that owned Robalos and the like I see it's no show winner. It's definitely not an offhsore boat, not a 'work' boat, but it is a good recreational boat which is exactly why I bought it.

And having seen the newer models, there's definitely a difference. I would not think twice about buying a newer one if I had the cash, for what I'm looking to do with it. That's the key, don't buy a bayliner if you're a commercial fisherman, or do a lot of offshoring and expect it to hold up to that punishment. That's not what they're built for.

I could not care less what other people have to say about the bayliners. The important thing is that I'll be out on the water, no matter what it is I'm in.

Alot of the trash-talkers are so far outta-wack with their opinions. They usually have a 'friend' with an old, negleted Bayliner/Force which was bought out of inexperience or desperation, which is their only experience with the brand, or they are just envious of someone with a late model boat. They'll say "Oh, you coulda got a SeaRay for another 4 or 5 grand!" The funny thing is most of these guys don't even have money for ANY late model boat, much less one for more money. The guys with a POS boat and no money always seem to have lots of advice on what they would do with someone else's money. If it gets you on the water and back without breaking your bank account, that's all that matters. With a little care and maintenence, any boat can stay nice.

I've owned a new 1992 22', a 1997 used 23' and a used 1997 26.' All of them Bayliners and all very reliable, comfortable boats. No complaints here.

The NEW bayliners are old Searay molds. Not bad, No Cobalt,Cant expect to pay $10,ooo for a boat and it expect it to last.. Buy a YUGO, how long do they last? first oil change? This is what I hate about these forums, SOMEONE owned a a 1980 PEICE OF SH-T,bought by some MORON who lets his buddy work on it.Now the boats a peice of shi-t cause your buddys to stupid to fix it.(and your stupider for letting him work on it) NO BOAT BUILDER puts out Crap except for Mariah and there out of buisness.80s Bayliners were crap no doubt,New ones are a different story.....

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

quantumleap
I feel your comments were directed toward me. I will take a cheap shot at myself but when you talk about my boat that is where I draw the line.
First of all I would take my boat over any new or old Bayiner any day for many reasons. Here is a few.
I prefer classic glass. I doubt any one here would call my boat a POS by a long shot. There is something about restoring a cool boat from the past. When you are at the ramp and you have your brand new shiny Bayliner and I have my boat guess which one everyone will be standing around. That will put a smile on your face before you even leave the dock and it only gets better from there. Also I would never buy a new boat. The desperation when you drive off the lot is to much for me to handle. Then there is making payments in the middle of winter. Not for me. Mine sits in the backyard just waiting for spring. Oh I do have to pay for trailer tags $22.00.
As for you comment about “reference a friends poorly cared for Bayliner”. That is the point. The reputation is "Bayliner owners are novices owners that buy cheap boats and don't take care of them” I didn't make the rep I just see it reinforced a lot. Especially by people like yourself. A stuck up a**. “Don't have the money for a new Bayliner” Please! If I wanted one I could have it with a signature. You don't think restoring a 33 year old, one of a kind boat takes money and yes a whole lot of knowledge. Can you take your Bayliners motor apart down to the last bolt and put it back together? I can and that is half the fun for me. Then there is the piece of mind knowing if a new inexperienced Bayliner owner cut across my bow unexpected trying to beat that other boat to the dock I am sure my boat would go straight through the Bayliner and out the other side and I don't think I would have more then paint damage. I have a better chance coming back to the dock no matter what I run into. Dumb boater (all makes) or something floating just below the surface. Like one day I hit a 8X8 by 10’ doing about 35mph. A big slam then see-sawed over the R/R tie throwing the bow into the water, dead stop within two seconds. Damage-small dig to the bottom of the keel. Do you feel that safe with your Bayliner?
Please from now on don't get personal that is not cool. :(

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

f_inscreenname, I think you've made this personal. You shouldn't. This topic on Bayliners is profusely redundant. Same crap every time. The comments appeared to be generalisations on the many numerous Bayliner bashers of past and present.

I've never owned a Bayliner of old or recent vintage, so I have no experience either way with them. From what I can tell of the many Bayliner owners commenting here, the newer ones seem to be just fine. Somebody has to by the Chevys and somebody has to buy the restored Mercedes and BMW's.

Bottom line, "Whatever floats your boat!" :D

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

f-name: My comment wasn't directed at you as I personally don't know you or what kind of boat you own. You could have a new Cobalt for all I know. I didn't bother to read your whole post as I really don't care to engage in a pointless discussion about you and your life. I was merely reflecting on the hundreds of hits you can find on this site regarding bad experiences with Bayliners. I don't even own a Bayliner!! Before you go throwing profanities at me or anyone else make sure you have your facts straight and try not to assume anything as you just make yourself look silly.

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

Hey guys if was looking for advice on buying a boat and posted it here I think I'd sit on shore and watch the boats fly appart. I posted asking for advice about a Wellcraft excell to replace my bayliner, and the most positive I heard was its a step up from a bayliner. What I've learned is if you spend more on a boat chances are you'll have fewer problems, but they will cost a lot more to fix. All mercruiser and OMC stern drives are created equal,They don't put the defective ones in cheaper models, the stern drive is the most likley place you will have issue's. Hope the guy that started this thread did't already buy a bayliner, nothin worse than worying about sinking money into something your going to making payments on for 5 years.

Jim :D

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

I read this entire posting, and I to will not bash any boat builder. Bayliner, although may have a reputation, would not be in business if they built junk. Bayliner got its bad rap when they first started getting popular in the early to mid eighties do to structural flaws in the hulls that led to cracking, this problem was taken care of a long time ago. As far as comparing different makes, lets face you have mercruiser or Volvo IO, it does not say Bayliner on the outdrive, so drive train wise there about all the same. Now comparing older bayliners to older other boats here is my take. If you have a 10 year old boat that was taken care of covered, washed, preventive maintenance, dry stored, it will be in good shape, I don't care who made it. If you take a higher end Boat builder, Regal, Sea Ray, Stamas (got to through in the local guys), and it is ten years old, never covered, motor never flushed, never cleaned, it would probably be a POS by now.

When I read posts that people place regarding the quality of a used boat and the first thing that is mentioned is the "problems they have had with the engine since buying this used boat", well that’s all the last owner not taking care of his stuff.

Remember, no boats are maintenance free, all will have problem when not taken care of.

Next time you go boating, look around , there are many Bayliners still out there, young and old.

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

Today's Bayliners are well built. It is a price point boat, dont expect the Cadilac when you fork out the money for a Chev. (Sometimes, the Chev can be pretty da* good! :D I have a Bayliner, it does the job I intended it to do, with no complaints. I have looked at other brands, an could not rationalize spending 10 grand more. If I had intended it to be a workhorse, I may have gone differently.

Okay, don't own a boat, but am going to soon. I took a look a the so called 'cadillac's' of the boating world's entry level boats and compared them to the Bayliner 175. Sorry folks, but the Bayliner wins hands down. There goes that theory that the Bayliner is the Chevy... not when it looks better than the Cadillac's!

Oh, and don't forget about all the raving reviews I have read on the web about Bayliners and how good they are... Man these bayliner bashers are either born ignorant, or just like to be prejudiced.

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

Somebody...(f-screen?) needs to tell all the owners of the new and old Bayliners in our marina what a bad deal they got, that they're really not having fun; that, despite all odds, those 20-year old Bayliners aren't safe at all because they're about to fall apart; and that they're all new and inexperienced boat operators (including, I guess, the X-Navy captain with the 1986 Contessa). I'm sure they'd really appreciate your expertise...

Funny....looked to me like they were enjoying themselves....

Re: Bayliner Quality - what year improved?

My 2001 Bayliner is only 3 seasons old, but used alot. So far, no problems. Runs great, looks great, and is now paid for. Bondo and these guys have been bashing Bayliners since I joined this forum. The last time I looked at iboats almost a year ago, they were bashing Bayliners. I think I'll logoff and watch "I love Lucy" or "Andy Griffith". I'll have a better chance of seeing something different. Goeb
