Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

I finished tabbing and capping of the stringers. I used 3 layers of 12 oz biaxial overlapping the layers. Than I capped it all that way to the base of the stringers with a 17 oz biaxial without mat. Now I need to add cleats to stringers and frames. I used two layers of 17 oz biaxial to tie that transom and stringers. Is that enough I wonder? So far I have used up 7 gallons of epoxy. I hope 2 gal will be enough for the deck and various patches. Need to order some deck paint, maybe Durabak?

Amazing work. I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner to respond to your post.

I found two places in the metroplex with resin rollers:

1. West Marine, but they are EXPENSIVE

2. Composite one, but they are on my side of town and have a $125 minimum order. You can get everything from composite one, though.

---------

Floor coating? Use what you want, Durabak and the other one that starts with a K. I am going to go with some girp compound and Rustoleum because I have had great luck with it on bare glass.

One secret trick with buying boat stuff. West Marine is stupid expensive, but they are local and have tons of stuff. James Town distributing is very reasonable, but they are in Maine and waiting sucks sometimes. It turns out that West Marine will match James town Distributing prices. Before you say it, I still order stuff I can wait on from James Town too...

Thanks for kind words. I hope it does not all fall apart first time on the water :). I did almost all layup wet-on-wet, and when not, I sanded and cleaned with acetone before starting new layer. Texas heat is starting to get to me, I cannot get much done each day, maybe two hours at most. I am pissed off since I planned on finishing this by end of May, but my injury set me back 3 weeks. Now I am looking at maybe finishing this but the end of June

I am going to go with some girp compound and Rustoleum.

Can you expand on this a little bit. Do you have any links. I looked at the Durabak but since I am puting 8 oz. mat with epoxy, it looks to me to be overkill.

Any other options, can I use some regular paint and mix in some sand. Suggestion please :)

Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

Although I have not been posting anything in a while, my progress was steady.
I will be posting some more photos later. I can see the end of this project.

This weekend I will be putting rivets to join cap and hull. Have to find the right size of the rivets though. It looks like original rivets were 3/16 X 1/2 but I am not sure.

An expert once told me not to use rivets. They were Bayliner?s cheep solution. Get yourself some stainless steel screws with self locking nuts (the ones with the white rubber band attached) and use these instead. Just my 2 cents

I think I'll go with rivets, if it lasted 13 years originally it will last another 13. Plus, I'll add additional rivets.

Here are some more photos of my progress.

After I glassed in stringers, I added cleats on the top to enlarge the surface area to which deck will be glued. I will not ( I did not) use any screws at all.

Two part closed cell foam is in also. I added it per compartment. Than I used the flat hand saw used for the tiles to cut of excess and to smooth it out. There were some voids here and there, that I just filled with Home Depot brand expanding foam. Left over foam from one compartment was used in the next one.

Oh, I forgot to add, I place a thin layer of plastic foil before puring in foam, just as it was originally. This made a process of taking the foam out a brezze.

Gas tank is in too. Placed a 4 strips of neoprene rubber under the tank. Used also thiner and softer version to secure tank.

Here is a second piece of the deck being glued using epoxy. I treated the top part with epoxy, and bottom with wood preservative and than paint (the parts that are above foam, and middle section with epoxy on both sides.

Nice work. You are going to be happy getting that thing out knowing how solid it is built now.

Thank you. I should be done soon. Just need to put rivets in, seal it, put rub rail, install engine and re-paint deck one more time etc. I am using Durabak in white.

Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

I got it from us composites, package for 8 cubic ft I think. It was two component one. This was just barely enough, and I've reused some of the old foam. So if your old foam is soaked in water you'll need more, almost double.

Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

I put a cap on during the winter, used twice as many rivets as there were originally. I also sealed it along with 3m 4200 (just because I had a tube already open. Installed engine also, hooked up all the wires and cables and started installing panels and redoing upholstery on the seats since the bases were all rotten. I estimate that I will be done in about 2-3 weeks, just in time for spring.
