Welcome to iBoats!

Well....Sorry to be the bearer of BAD NEWS but... your transom is TOAST!!! The PO really did a number on it!!! It needs to be completely replaced. Post some pics of the inside standing in the middle of the boat looking back at the stern/transom so we can see the configuration. You will prolly need to either remove the top cap or at the very least cut the cap at the back to gain access to the transom. Lots of examples here on the forum and plenty of guys here to help you with the methods to repair her. Typical costs will be around $1000 to do the Stringers, Transom and Deck. The first link in my signature below has drawings and info on what all you will need to do.

What's the question? As stated before, you need to remove the top cap of the boat and prolly replace the stringers, transom and deck. Lots of examples here on the forum. Do a search for Stringer, transom and deck replacement.

Yes you need to take a LOT of measurements of the hull prior to removing the cap. It MUST remain the same in order for the cap to fit back on. Yes, the hull must be supported properly during the rebuild. Like I said you should do a lot of searching and reading here on the forum of others who have done similar rebuilds. This would be a good one to start with...http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=521706

I fully understand you not wanting to remove the complete cap, however, IMHO that will just make more work for you in the end. My reasons are it will be the worst kind of fiberglassing repair which is the visible areas of the cap and that requires real attention to get the repaired areas smooth and color-matched. Hopefully, another member will post a recommended area to make the cuts if that is really what you are going to do. Good luck!

You're gunna have to remove the cap. You whole top structure is connecte to the cap and in order to get to the stringers it all has to come off.

Re: bass king 1720 motor mount repair options

Hi johnalgood25,

I just caught up with your upcoming project...

I see that you have been referred to my current restoration...

Welcome and get ready to roll up your sleeves and open up your wallet...

I can tell you already that you are in the same state of mind I was in when I first started my resto..."DENIAL"...

A free boat is gonna cost you a lot in labor and quite a bit in money...

That rotten transom is a sure indicator of rotten guts...

I was just looking back at some of your pics and it looks like the stringers are completely devoid of wood...

I am not sure if this is the way this boat was built, although I doubt it...or whatever wood used to be in there is long gone...

You also want to make 100% sure that the engine is in excellent condition...otherwise you could add a significant amount of $$$ to the final tally...I didn't see one in the pics...???

I will be happy to stay on board and help you out any way I can, but you have to be sure that you want to get into this...it is not an easy task and will consume most of your free time for the foreseeable future...

BTW, there are a ton of really helpful guys here, but because of that, they are usually helping out a bunch of people, and it may take a day or two sometimes before we can get to you...

Best of luck.
GT1M:)

By the looks of these pics...the PO just removed a rotten deck and exposed some of the boat's structure...
You are correct in saying that it will need new stringers and deck, plus the transom...:)

Yeah, unfortunately, if you want to do this boat the right way, you are going to have to "de-Cap-itate" it...

Re: bass king 1720 motor mount repair options

Also as the engine goes my wifes Dad is a commercial fisherman. He has a 65 hp motor he would sell me for $400. Is this a good range for a 17 foot boat?

Re: bass king 1720 motor mount repair options

Ask all the questions you want or need to...I am happy to answer...remember...the Only Dumb Question is the one you didn't ask, and then screwed it up...;)

Hull rivets, yes they did that...screwed back together...no problem, you will have to add a "nailer" strip to the inside upper edge of the hull...It will be PB'd and tabbed in...I will be doing this to mine, but I still have a ways to go before I get there...

You could use rope, or ratchet straps, but I made a quickie hull clamp using a couple of pieces of 1x4's...like these...

They keep it from flexing in or out...

You are welcome to check out these links to my photobucket account...although there are like a bazillion pics...some of them might help...
