Attachment Question

I am replacing the wood tabs that the gunwall pads fasten to with aluminium angles. What is the best way to fasten them to the hull? I have tried to upload a pic but it will not work for me for some odd reason.

Option 3 works the best and is the easiest to use.

On your question - What boat are you working on? Is it aluminum or fiberglass?

Using closed head rivets to attach the new AL angles is probably the best way.

Forget the rivets. Not an expert on glassing, but I thought glass and AL don't bond well.

I'll leave it to the ones that know.

Thanks GA_Boater, nice try though. I am leaning towards roughing up the contact side of the angle and applying a nice amount of PB, but I'm not sure. So if anyone knows feel free to correct me or agree.

Not a good idea due to different rates of expansion and contraction with tempature changes. PB will hold for awhile but the bond will eventually fail.

If you prep the area the way it should be...(sand it down to FRESH Glass, wipe with acetone and then apply) the PB won't detach from the hull I'd recommend drilling a couple of 3/8" holes in the L-Bracket to allow the PB to ooze thru and then smooth it out. This will, in effect, create a kind of Fiberglass rivet to ensure it stays put.

Yea, I would second that idea as well. You basically captured the aluminum "L" brackets that way and even if the aluminum detaches from the PB and fiberglass, they will still stay put. JMHO!

Vintage Rider, this was my concern for doing this but I think the ooze holes make sense.

Getting ready to drill them now and fasten down the seat base bases lol. I hope to have the man power this weekend to put the top back on and start rigging the motor.

Well the first signs say that WOG knows what he is talking about.

Next weekend, or the weekend after the top will be going on and I will be finishing up the splashwell area. The braces are very strong and I think they will do just fine
