Re: Advise please!

I can't argue with you SS... In fact I was coming back to add that my thoughts on it are to just walk away if there is ANY rot at all.... We need to check out the transom VERY carefully too... If I were a betting man I'd bet that I could likely find some rot on it somewhere. It concerns me that the trailer is "excellent" but the boat is just "fair".... expressly less than good.

Is that really a merc?

SR was infamous for specifying that outdrives and outboards be painted white and identified with their own design logo. Not to worry, it is most likely the correct engine as long as its a 135, NOT a 100! Seller is probably clueless to the actual displacement. Happens a lot. Ask on the phone for the serial number of the engine. That will identify its year/hp.

Agreed Smoke!

Hey Salty! Just did some research for ya. Double check the length of that Seville! The 100 hp engine was installed on the 16 footer...NOT the 18!

If that is a 16 footer...your first offer should be $1500

Re: Advise please!

Decide ahead of time what you would be willing to pay and don't let emotion into it..... whether you buy it or not you WILL find another one in a day or twenty.

Listen to Smoke on this: I remember gettin' all jazzed about buying a boat. BE WILLING TO WALK AWAY.

Of the list that I posted, I liked the idea of the SeaRay the best. And would probably pursue it first. I understand Silly's point on the Arrowglass, but (no offense Silly) I don't completely agree with him. The automotive seats look like they were installed rather nicely and as time and money permit - they could be replaced. It might be a little underpowered, but several of the older tri-hulls were designed for the 50 - 90 range. They run nicely and economically (and those 50 Evinrudes are pretty good OBs). I like the tri-hull platform - I intentionally keep buying them. On big water, yep they'll beat you up. Inland - not so bad, with some advantages that a V can't give you. Main reason I suggested lookin' at it ... It looks freakin' CLEAN and cared for. That's always been a good indicator to me.

There might be some reason that Silly is right about not buying it, and on closer inspection it could be total junk. But if the SeaRay turns out to be a no-go, I wouldn't completely write it off.

Hey Silly, just talked to the owner of the Seville. He stated no transom rot, runs great, & has been in the family. He is going to send me some pics and the serial number of the motor, I will PM you when I get it.

Thanks for the help!!

Re: Advise please!

The Sea Ray: His 'boat is winterized' comment is so that you don't ask him to fire it up before buying. If he is selling an outboard boat, he should be willing to fire it up. This tells you nothing about whether it will perform under load/power, but it's better than not starting something before you buy it.

Your odds have increased greatly since simple outboards have been posted. You have a fighting chance.

Re: Advise please!

I would be very concerned buying any boat that I couldn't first see, and hear run. Now a sea test might be out of the question, because of price and the fact that it's winter, but no way would I buy anything I couldn't run first. That would be a must for my dollars. If it meant waiting till warmer days, then so be it. The engine is (outboards and I/O's) one of the most expensive parts on a boat. Buy a bad one and your done for the season, and buy a broken one and your out so much $ it may not be worth fixing and/or buying. Either way I would want to see that motor run/shift and drive if possible

Re: Advise please!

Some very sensible advice posted here, allthough I have I/O when on a tight budget I would go outboard for sure, the Seville looks good but then on a later post the 17 Wako would be my 1st choice. You gotta run the engine on muffs as long as you can 15 minutes or more why not, offer to pay the gas if he pulls a face. Then go thru the boat with a fine tooth comb, don't worry how long it takes, longer the better, follow all the advice in this post. Jack the wheels and check the bearings, you dont want to be sitting at the side of the interstate on your way home. Ask about the history and ask if he has any invoices for repairs. Do a compression test, When you have been there checking for two hours offer 1800 and be prepared to walk you should end up at least half way or better. All the best with your purchase

Re: Advise please!

The Mako I posted: It didn't last this long by accident. I am actually thinking of buying that boat. I don't think a penny could be lost on that even if I were to use it for kicks for a couple of years. Care for it, fish on it, toss on reproduced logos and sell in the right area and she'll go for more.

Makos are held in very high regard (well, until the family sold them in the 1990's).

Edit: I am really thinking of running out to NJ to look at that Mako.

Re: Advise please!

grab that mako, if the motor starts and runs. no time for sea trials on a boat like that. If you don't grab it someone will.

Now you're looking at real boats.

The mako is a good one, but like all mako's you need to ask the owner the right questions. It is a great fishing platform and will fish well on the drift and anchor. Need to find out what if anything has been restored. transom, stringers etc. I have had two makos, a 19 footer being my first boat.

The grady is also something I had, a 22 foot seafarer. basically the same layout as the one posted above but larger. These kinda have the same issues. Need to check the transom and stringers. Basically you need to do that on any older boat. The good thing about either one is there are forums that cater to just those boats. Classicmako.co and I can't remember the sites name for the gradys.

Either one would be a better fishing boat than other boats posted. For the price, either one would be fine as long as you know what you are getting into. Check either one out and know what it is going to take to keep them on the water. rebuilding/restoring either is doable but it eats money.

Re: Advise please!

Would love to pick up that Mako, but logistically is a nightmare. It is 600 over budget and I would have to factor in a 4 hr drive. Between that 600 gas and food for the trip, that would be another 1k. Just don't have it laying around. Could come up with it in a month or two, but unlikely the Mako will still be around.

The search continues....

But I am still optimistic about the Seville...
