Salty I think this would be a good time for you to get into a safe boating course, it certainly couldn't hurt. Give you an idea of what your looking at as far as safety and Laws

Re: Advise please!

Car tires aren't designed the same way as trailer tires - side walls on trailer tires are typically stronger to handle more concentrated weight (I say it that way because most people instantly think, "a car is heavier than a boat")...

And ... A 3000lb Car is a big car and it has 4 tires.
A 3000lb Boat and Trailer, only has 2!

Re: Advise please!

He got the Deluxe trailer. 4 tires!

The 3000lbs was only an example as a comparison of a boat trailer to a car.

In this case a 20 ft Grady with trailer, fuel and gear , and you're well over 4000lbs.
Now we're compairing trailers to trucks.
They need to be four 18 inch truck tires, not four 15 inch car tires.

Re: Advise please!

Trailer suspensions are hard on tires, which do almost all of the dampening. Even if the load issue works out, a trailer tire gets virtually no relief because it has almost no travel to absorb impact and no help from real springs and shocks... and we're talking even minute vibrations.

Re: Advise please!

well those pics are about worthless BUT the asking price is 800 not 1000......He has lowered his price and not changed the body of the add....politely offer 500 and if he says no walk away... go get some tacos.... after eating call him back and offer 600 and take it home...... You're gonna have to look at it in person though..... look for rot and do a compression test on the engine..... then run the engine.... if all's good snag it..... this summer, depending on what it is, the engine would possibly sell for more..... BTW do NOT take your kids to look at it if you can avoid it but do take the wifey..... the kids playing in it and getting all excited will hurt your bargaining power but the wifey looking pissed and getting back in the truck might cut the price in half instantly LOL

Damn! I just bought a boat, and I'm sure I could have come out ahead if I had hired you, Smoke, to be my buyer's broker. Even paying for transportation to Illinois and your lodging, I could have saved a bunch! Rats! :D

Re: Advise please!

WOW! I just read this whole thread from start to finish. I was on the edge of my seat and actually yelling at my computer trying to keep Salty from buying some of those clunkers. Everyone that responded really came through for him. Great job!
I don't know why, but I couldn't open the pics of the new boat and see it, but I am really happy for Salty and his family and hope he has a great summer of boating.

Hey, thanks cannonman! I am glad you enjoyed my journey! You weren't the only one sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happened next!

Did you even get those pics to work?

I tried to upload more, but I keep getting an error msg

Re: Advise please!

Hey fellas!

Well, the dollars are flying! Got the small f-glass patch fixed on the bow, then the tilt motor went out....so there goes some more bills! Oh well, I guess this is just what happens, no real way to predict that. Still have yet to get her in the water. I should have it back from the marina this next week, then it is time for Spring commissioning! With this warm weather we are having here in New England, I am just chomping at the bit to get out and do some fishin'n!!

Looks like the two pics from my previous post are viewable on this site, can you guys see them? I will post some pics of her when I get it back from the marina....

And on a side note, I am in boating course now......and yes, great advise! I am learning a lot!
