Music?? MUSIC?? That's a stretch :D

I can see hopping up ground pounding V8's like older Firebirds, Camaros Vettes, Torino's, Galaxies, Goats Chargers..Etc.....but what I fail to understand is who looks at an 89 Civic and goes "whoo hoooo....race car!!" Throw $4,000 in paint so it changes color as it drives by, another few grand on wheel treatment and yet more $$$$$ in a 459,936 watt boom box stero and you can't forget all the spoilers and ground effects....but you still have an 89 Civic.....Whoooo hooo!

These guys always want test my Hemi with a little race. I don't like street racing, but get me on a stretch of open road and I unleash the beast on em. Funny....they always sound like they'll go fast, then they lose and make a sharp u-turn or turn down a side street.

Guess they don't like losing to a truck???

Yeah...probably not PC to use the term "ricer."

I called one that one time in front of my wife and she did a double-take on me since I don't usually say stuff like that.

Ok...so what should they be called?

The one thing I will say in defense of those things is if it is keeping kids wrenching on cars and not sucking on a bong or destroying their brains in front of an X-box, how bad can it be. They really are not any different than any other rodders of any other generation. Even if some may not like the end result of their work, there are worse things the kids can be doing.

No...it's completely different. "Rodders" of other generations make their cars faster and their trucks better offroad. They have a purpose in mind and build the vehicle to do the task. Ricers take economy cars that are slow and always will be, and pretend to make them fast with fake parts. The vehicles have absolutely no purpose, and more often than not the parts actually decrease performance and are illegal. I think bongs and xboxes are a better use of time then that crap...

(IE see the pic above this post - can that be described as anything but stupid?)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll tell you what, I have seen Honda's whoop the camaro and mustangs at the drag strip. These guys really know how to get some HP out of those little motors, along with gearing. I am with Jason, these kids that are serious can make those jappers run.

When I was young it was the same deal. Glass packs, hijackers, and a set of Gregor's and some guys thought they had a hot rod. It was all in fun. But then you had the guys that were really into it. Those cars ran. Same deal today just different cars.

Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

There's a difference between rice and fast Japanese cars...

Rice is what the idiots do with wings, fart pipes, fiberglass body kits that don't match the rest of the paint, god awful graphics, and other fake performance parts. (I really love the wheel covers that have plastic rotors inside - except they're bowl shaped  ) That kind of crap is pure stupidity.

Then there's the people that actually know things about engines and performance and actually make their car fast and leave off the fake plastic performance parts. I still think that's a huge waste of money, since a FWD car with a small engine is the WORST platform you could come up with for a race car, BUT, I can respect what they've done and I won't call them stupid.

Bottom line is ricer = stupid. If the driver isn't an idiot, and the car is done tastefully and correct mechanically, then they're not a ricer. Unfortuneately there are very few people that actually take the time to make something nice with Japanese economy cars.

As for the term "ricer" being offensive, I hope it is! Those people are idiots!

Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

The big problem is, what cool cars are left to soup up?
Do you have any idea what an Impala from the 60's costs these days?
The cars from the muscle car era are snatched up by collectors or middle aged enthusiasts for a premium, or have rusted away. The decent later model domestic cars are pretty much undesirable or uneconomical to modify and operate for those on a budget (mostly V8 vs high out put 4 cylinder).
Only desirables I can think of are the Grand National, Camaro/Firebird, Eldorado, Riviera, Mustang, Corvette, Marauder, Monte Carlo, Caprice SS,
I owned lots of cool cars in my teens and early twenties that most wouldn't dream of using as a daily driver these days.
That was my generation. It went from Novas, Darts and Dusters and evolved to 5.0 Mustangs and CRX si's. I'll tell you, after owning refined Japanese cars like Honda CRX, Infiniti Q45, Mazda Miata, Acura Legend, Subaru, SAAB, Porsche etc etc, you never want to hit an off ramp in a domestic again.
I hate obnoxious exhaust noise with a passion. The cars on the other hand make me laugh. I'm sure some of the owners will look back and say "what the heck was I thinking?"
