Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

I personally wouldn't buy a "domestic" car, its just me, but like others have said, I've got some respect for the guys who do it right.

At the dragstrip this summer I got a good idea for how fast some of these cars can really be. Some guy had an old ulgy Jetta, the thing looked like a total POS with steel rims w/no hubcaps. I don't know what the hell he had in in, but it was a rocket, nothing could run with it, he was outrunning all the Mustangs and Camaros.
Bottom line is ricer = stupid. If the driver isn't an idiot, and the car is done tastefully and correct mechanically, then they're not a ricer. Unfortuneately there are very few people that actually take the time to make something nice with Japanese economy cars.

As for the term "ricer" being offensive, I hope it is! Those people are idiots!

I agreed that the fakers are idiots, the broke white trash, hill billy, trailer park are the one without the knowledge and the money to do it right and still trying to looks cool. How's that for being offensive? To me when you say "ricer" you're refering to Asian ethnic group not those idiots trying to look cool. Why don't we call f..ing nerds or something. There are lots of modded imported cars that are very fast and have body kits and wing and loud pipe.

I'd agree with JasonJ: I'd rather see kids working on cars and maybe learning something by their mistakes and successes than getting into trouble or wasting their time in front of the TV, even if the cars end up looking ridiculous. That never offended me, I don't have to drive it :D .

Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

Theriver hit the nail on the head. As kids, we rodded muscle cars because those big V8 beasts were what was available at a low cost. These were also the cars our parents bought for us. Now, kids are getting the small imports because they are cheap. One thing I will also say, that ricer is ten times safer than an old big V8 beast. They handle better, stop quicker, most have airbags, and most have dramatically higher crash test ratings. I would much rather have my kid in a riced out 95 Civic than a 60something beast that has drum brakes and noodle handling.

Yes, most are just for appearance, but that is true of every version of automotive interest. We won't even go into how bad those jacked-up chromed out 4x4s do offroad. I have seen those things get whooped by stock Suzuki Samurais more than a few times. Same with muscle cars. How many have seen the big rear meats and glasspacks on some skanky GM with the venerable 305 V8. But then there are cars like one guy around my parts. He has a few year old Eclipse that is pearl white, very clean and classy looking. And it would crush any domestic car around here.

Yeah, some make their cars look silly, but taste is highly subjective, and it is pointless to say something someone else did is stupid. It is guaranteed that someone thinks what you or I does is stupid, that is why I try not to pass judgement...

What's wrong with that? Asians eat alot of rice don't they? I wouldn't be offended if someone called me a "cheeseburger" just because I drive a huge, wastefull pickup like most other american males. If someone is ofended so easily as to not like me calling someone else a food item, again, I don't care if it's not politically correct...I'm not a politician! Their cars offend me.

Because you're associated them to something that looks retarded, if the term is refer to something nice then it wouldn't be offending. Why are those stupid cars offended you anyway? did those cars actually did something to you? it might be offending when they take those cheap weak Neon and put stuff on them because they are degrading what is already a terrible domestic product.

Like I said...these people are idiots, I don't care if I offend them. In fact, I prefer it. If the person is not an idiot and the car is done tastefully then it is not rice. If you or anyone else is offended by something I call someone else, and not yourself, again, I don't care, because if that's the case you're way too easily offended.

How could they not?

First, they normally cover their car in highly illegal lights - blue LEDs in places they don't belong, overdriven and not DOT approved headlights that are poorly aimed, blinding every driver they go by, and then they cover their taillights or make them into the wrong colors so you don't even know when they put on the brakes! I totaled my truck and permanently damaged my knee and neck because of some idiot who either didn't dim his brights or was using poorly aimed illegal bulbs. I almost died because of it!

Secondly, the driver is usually some stupid kid, who thinks his car is fast because it sounds like a weedwacker and has a wing. It's not and it never will be, but they still try to race everybody on the road.

Thirdly, their mufflers are usually over the legal noise limit, as are their stereo systems. I believe the law in oregon says the exhaust has to be below 100 decibels and the stereo cannot be heard more than 50 feet from your car. I still hear them drive by inside my house at least 100 feet from the road.

As I said before, these people are nothing but idiots, and I hope to god that I offend them in every way possible! If you're offended just because I made a mean comment about someone else, tough titties. I am an adult and I live in a free country, and I am not a politician. I do not have to be politically correct and I refuse to be. It has nothing to do with Asians. If I see a white american boy wearing a cowboy hat in Texas driving a Neon with a wing I'll call him a stupid ricer too.

LMAO @ ZMOZ!
The rice mobiles can be alright if they are done right. And they can be fast. But the ones Mr. Moz is refering to are neither good looking or fast IMO.But, I dont really care what you do to your car.As for the "ricer" comment, Im with ZMOZ.I am tired of pandering to every _____________ (insert race, religion, age, sex, number of fingers, hair color,etc.etc.etc).Thicken up that skin man.I guess that I have a slanted view of things, cause I could care less what you call me.Lemme ask you this.Would it be wrong for a person of Asian origin to call another Asian a "ricer"? OR, is it only bad when a white guy calls an Asian a "ricer"?

Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

I should confess at this point that I am one of the original ricers. I had a 1980 Honda Civic 1500, my first car. It had a glasspack muffler, was covered in Hoosier and Halibrand racing stickers. I painted the wheels white, had four different brand of tires, and I even had the words "RICE ROCKET" spelled out across the hatchback in die cut letters. It was a real beaut!! Would I drive that car today? Hell no! But twenty years ago it was cool as heck and the older guys just laughed. What have I DONE!?

No it is not alright for anybody to call anybody any name that is refering to a group of people as a whole. Just like you have no right to call those big, old, beat up cars with stereo system or wheels that worth more then the car itself a "collard greener" or "chickliner". Rice is of Asian origin and these people had nothing to do with it like Zmoz said so why don't we use other term that is not Asian related or of any other group of people. It's not the Japaneese fault that those cars look like they do.

Oh, but I do. I have the right to call anybody whatever I want...whether you or anyone else thinks it's racist or anything else. Like I said before, if you don't like it, tough titties.

How many americans have died for the right of free speach? I will continue to speak 100% freely, and I don't care who I offend. (especially if those people I'm offending have proven they are stupid by ruining a perfectly good car) You have the exact same right to offend me if you want...but that won't happen because I don't get so worked up about such ridiculous things.

Oh no! That guy on the internet called me a mean name! Booo hooo! I'm telling mom!

Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

Oddly enough, here is one of those few times where me and ZmOz agree.

Cheese comes from Wisconsin.....We are know as "Cheeseheads".............Pretty much the exact same thing as calling a car a "ricer". We even make Cheese hats, bras, heads, beer holders , coolers, ties, seats, fake butts.......you name it we make it. Now I find nothing offensive about the term and I am called it. Heck we call our selves it. I'm coming out of the closet right now. I AM A FULL BLOODED CHEESEHEAD!! Its not a racisist thing to say, and those who own those cars being called a "ricer"prolly dont care what we call them anyways and have it coming to them. Get over it, its a pointless thing to argue about.

And to those who think its different because "ricer" is a derogatory term and "cheesehead" isnt just ask a Vikqueens fan or a Bears fan.

I refer to "ricers" as metrics, motorcycles anyhooo.

Very crazy times we live in, but not too different from the past where folks were killed by referring to others in an offensive fashion.

my two cents......

Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

Its one thing to compare ricers today with us twenty years ago. There is a big difference in the mods. Ours were actually more for performance...elevated rear end, wider tires, traction bars to keep the rear end from hopping etc...

Todays ricers dont get the performance thing. A big exhaust on a small motor = lots of noise from a small little motor. The big rear fin actually REDUCES performance since most of the cars are front wheel drive. Applying downforce to the rear of a front wheel drive car will actually upset the balance and cause the front to lift, making handling unstable. What they should have in a front wing to balance out the downforce.

I just think its funny that someone would spend an additional 8k to increase the horsepower of a 10k Civic, but still come out with less power than a 14k Accord.

Oh well, they keep JCWhitney in business. Paint, stickers and lights make a car fast!!!!
Or maybe I'm just jealous:)

Nav

Re: a wing, a fake carbon fiber hood, and a farting muffler

The shop down the street from mine is a ricer shop. Some dude in his late twenties has all the area kids(16-22) convinced that he knows something. The latest craze is they are all ripping out the front ends of their cars and installing these huge, oversized, radiators. These things are seriously oversized and could probably cool a 12 liter cummins diesel, yet for some strange reason he has all of these kids putting these things in their 3.0 liter Honda's. Besides being rediculous, they are all driving around with their bumpers removed, their marker lights gone and most likely their airbag sensors cut out...to show off this big performance "investment" that they made.
By the way, they still race and drive like idiots (just like we did) and still have wrecks and kill themselves (we have peeled two ricers off of the telephone pole in front of our shop and watched one miss the phone pole and slam into a parked work truck...the ricer lost that argument....in the last few months). Kids involved in this "harmless" sport are still getting hurt and dying. I would rather my son spend his time on X-box "mods".
I don't know what "track" some people are going to, but around here, I've never seen a ricer take any muscle car in the 1/4 mile. Oh, I forgot, the ricers, due to there low weight can get a slight "jump" off of the line....so they like to run 1/8 mile....and forget to mention that when they say they ran an "11".
Like some of the other posters, I've noticed that the "little men" get quite upset when you show them how a real car performs when they challenge you...they either turn off, or continue the race long after you have proved your point, or they get real pissed at the next light.....eventually.
Oh, yes.....PC.....that is your problem....not mine....I don't care. Oh, hats off to the guys that have actually gotten 300 horse out of the 150 horse stock motor....you have acomplished something.Really, I mean it......turbo, fuel injection, Nitros, chip mods, etc.....now try that with four more pistons.
How many americans have died for the right of free speach?
Funny you said that because they're also have freedom of expression and they're exercising that right. Before I drop this discussion since some folks just wouldn't stop their racially bias ways of thinking, I have a few words of advice to you: just don't go around So. Cal. and toss around that term on the street, you might become a missing person.
