That "radiator" you are seeing might be an intercooler. A lot of these guys are putting turbo kits on their cars, and are pretty darn proud of their intercooler. The other eason they are driving around with no front clip is since they did put the intercooler on, they need a new front clip so they are either modifying or waiting on a new front clip to better fit over the intercooler. Some might be knuckleheads too though :)

The rear wing still serves a purpose on a truely fast car. You need downforce on the rear of a car for control purposes as well as traction purposes. Doesn't matter which wheels are driving the car, if the rear gets light, you have a hard time keeping control. Of course, most of these cars cannot generate enough speed to create the downforce (the wing is mostly for show on these things). Besides, these guys are wringing 400, 500+ hp out of those little motors. They are also blowing them up on a fairly regular basis, but whatever, thats their deal...

And where did I say they couldn't do it? Again, nearly all ricers have more than one illegal part on their car and race illegally on the street. That is one right nobody in this country has - to do illegal things that endanger others on the road.

Been there, done that, won't hesitate to do it again. I've got a fist and a knife just like they do, and I'm bigger than most mexicans. (oh no...is that offensive too?! )

Fastest, best handling car I ever had I built myself from a stock 79 Rabbit. I bought a wrecked GTi and moved everything over; almost new 1.8 engine, springs, sway bars, nice recaro seats and all, even the elctronic fuel injection and ignition. Modded the transmission myself so it was a close ratio 4 speed with an OD 5th. Left the body plain jane, with the stock white paint and rims that were only slightly wider than stock. No farty mufflers, but I did take out the cat converter. I took several Camaros and Mustangs completely by surprise. That thing was one sweet car, FWD and all. Until some drunk rear-ended me...

But that is kind of the opposite of the "all hat and no cattle" business that all those silly offset rims and spoliers are about...

The most comfortable car I ever took road trips in was a Saab. I too think that american cars after the mid-70's started turning to junk. I like my Dodge Cummins truck, but even that does not have a body or suspension that can keep up with it's engine.

Those GTI's were pretty fun. Inside rear wheel always left the ground in a tight corner, they handled like nobodies business. Another fun car that you didn't see a lot of publicity about was the mid to late 80s Isuzu Impulse when it was the rear wheel drive wedge shaped platform. A buddy of mine bought one and killed Mustangs and Camaro Irocs all day long with that little 2.5 liter turbo 4 bangered job.

yeah, I miss that car.... sigh. Not only was it wicked fast and fun, but even with a lead foot I got 32 MPG on the highway.

I don't miss the tickets and high insurance rates though...

Me, personally, I don't quite understand the mentality.

If I wanted to build a fast boat, I wouldn't start with a 14ft aluminum, simply because it's easier to aquire. Likewise, if I want a fast car, I'm going to START with a fast car, not an economy commuter.

But, on the other hand, I have seen a few fast imports. I saw one pumping out more horsepower than a Dodge Viper V10.

I think the mentality is easy to understand. These kids can hook these cars up to a laptop and change a variety of engine management aspects with some strokes of the keys. They can do things with these cars that I would have had to disassemble half the engine to do when I was that age. Why screw around with carb swaps when you can just reprogram the fuel injection curve on a whim. Can't do that with the old iron, thats for sure.

I was watching that show, Overhaulin', last night. Foose did a tuner (that is what these cars are actually called btw), a 95 Civic. You can't get more hotrod than Foose, and even he is starting to dip into the trend. Like it or not, kids are going to hop up whatever they can. Just think, in 20 years when kids are driving fuel cell vehicles, you can imagine the weird mods that will go on with those rigs....

We have an '03 GTI. That thing is so much fun.

I also had a SAAB 9.5. Another amazing car. They are just great stock thank you . . .

Being a SoCal boy we always "cherried" VWs. I had a '69 Squareback with the front dropped a little and air shocks in the rear. I had a 1776cc engine with a mild cam and I chucked the fuel injection for dual Weber 40s. It was definitiely not fast but it was faster . . . It looked cool and I would never have stuck a wing on it. Friend crashed it, wish I still had it :(

A wing on an old bug would be hilarious. I had an old baja bug with a 1776 in it. You're right. It wasn't fast, but it was faster.
