Ok, I know that we have discussed the spray in great foam many times in this forum, many ask, can I use it instead of the mix and pour stuff???

I am hear to tell you, NO, NO, and if you even think about it, you should go see a head Doctor!

I am presently restoring a beautiful little 1956 Glaspar Sport Lido, nice lines, great balance, just a nice little run about.. I was not afraid, it needed a new floor, which is no big deal...after a little more work this evening, I found out why, despite its weather proofing abilities, it is also a "Great Sponge" It will absorb ever single rain drop that makes it through that little tiny pin hole in your deck!

So, despite the many, many times it has been posted on this as well as other forums, please don't think we are joking, this stuff is a joke, I just ripped out about a 1 foot square that was 6 inches thick that was real heavy, so I decided to weigh it, it weighed in at over 24 pounds, and will probably drip water long after I have left this world!

Don't do it, it may be cheap, but you are really going to pay for it in a couple of years!

Now, if you decide to use it, don't ever say you were not warned.

Man, I am glad I am going fly fishing this weekend!

:eek::eek:

And NO, I did not put it in, it was done by some DS in the past! I am really glad I didn't pay much for this boat!

Re: Great News!!!

Thanks for posting this. Many people, when told not to use it, insist that it's closed cell and should work fine.

Re: Great News!!!

The instructions on the can (yeah, I know it's just the manufacturers opinion) of the regular Great Stuff Foam state that it has to be painted to protect from the elements like moisture, sunlight, etc.

This stuff is NOT 56 years old, it was actually put in about 2.5 years ago...

You may think it is a debate and others can argue about it all they want, I was simply posting information about the mess I have found from it, I really don't care what anyone wants to use in their boat, but based on what I am seeing this foam is not the right thing to even think about. Now of course in my 50+ years of life, I figured out, if I don't like the subject, I just don't read the story...has worked out pretty good for me.

Man, I am glad I am going fly fishing this weekend!

Highlights are Fact ! .. well..all except one. Cheap my rear end ! $10 or so bucks for 12 OZ !! LOL !!

Thats kinda like liquid Gold here !! Almost a buck an OZ ( $ .83/oz I think ) ..

Lookie here .. http://www.uscomposites.com/foam.html .. now you can get 2lb/3/4/ etc all the way up to 16lb ( hard as a rock at 16 lb foam USCG foam ) for $21.50 for 4 Lb KIT of 2 part foam.

So consider that a 4 pound Kit gives you 1.7 Qts ( 54.4 OZ delivered with boxing etc. shipping ) that is $21.50/qt/54.4 ozs'. ( $.40/oz .. yet that is 40 cents/ oz and USCG approved 2 part foam ).

Lets go back to the Great Stuff which is $10 ish/12 oz. ( and you know all those 12 oz's are NOT going to come out of that can no matter what .. lets say 12 oz does anyway ) .. that is still $.83/oz ..

So there Is NO debate .. Great Stuff is good for the Intended applications .. just not ours .. and is More expensive in the long run and is not Marine.

So again MTBG .. You are correct on all your highlights .. That crap is Cheap .. but More expensive .. but Cheap ( If you know what I mean ;) ).

Sometimes our newer members want to try something new and thats fine .. but to say " I cant afford this " is sometimes misleading .. when they should have just asked and Research there answers :) .

Good Thread .

Negative! The highlights are false.

The original Great Foam can and needs to be painted to make it waterproof, if installed correctly with painting it'll work just fine.

The Pond and Stone formula Great Stuff is formulated for aquatic applications and doesn't need to be painted.

As far as price and convenience goes, if I just needed a small amount of foam I'd go to the store and buy the Great Stuff instead of having to wait for it to be shipped and pay shipping fees. If I needed a large amount I'd order the 2 part foam.

Great Stuff Foam isn't a bad product, it's just usually installed incorrectly.

Re: A small bit of advice...Great Foam...!!! ARGH!!!!.....

jigngrub,

I HIGHLY recommend you speak with the MFG of GREAT STUFF foam like I DID and get their opinion about using their foam in the Marine environment for floatation purposes. They do NOT recommend it. I have NOT contacted them about the NEW BLACK aquatic foam but I doubt it is any different. If you want to use it go ahead but this issue has been bantered about here for a LONG time and the consensus is and will continue to be that this product has no place in boat restoration. If you continue to recommend it's usage you will find a LOT of iBoaters strongly disagreeeing with you unless you can get written confirmation from the MFG that they are in agreement with your opinions.
