I had a couple deep scratches. Just leave them and buff it you dont even notice them once it is done.

Decided yesterday to mess around with some 600 grit wet sandpaper and was able to successfully sand out lots of little blemishes and scratches(tons more to go)...
My question for the experts... for deeper gouges (not thru the gelcoat), its it best to sand them out at risk of not having much gelcoat left in that area, or filling the scratches with colormatched gelcoat at the risk of it not being a perfect match and a lot more work... What do you guys do?

Not sure what your asking... maybe pictures of areas in question? Very light scratches can be sanded & buffed out but anything that is deeper than a superficial scratch must be filled with gel and sanded out. If you were to sand out deeper scratches your finish would not be flat and look terrible.(common sense) Color matching gel is not that difficult if you have any understanding of color mixing. It just takes a little patience ie trial and error. For the red on your boat you need to start with a neutral base gel and add color pigment to match and for the white start with a white pigmented gel mix to color match. It may take more yellow, or blue pigment, or ? to match your existing boats white color. It all depends on the condition of your particular boats existing gel. Work in small pigment quantities. It doesn't take much. You cant start with a white pigmented gel to match the red on your boat because adding reds or blues to white base will get you into pastel colors. Neutral based gel for primary colored mixes. I don't use waxed gel much anymore, I just add Duratec to my mixes for top coat or smaller scratches. Small scratches should be ground out (Dremel) slightly to allow gel coat to bind. Gelcoat minimum thickness is five mils. Sanding out scratches in your gelcoat too thin below the waterline and you run the risk of water blistering your glass. Loads of info on gel coat application on the tube. (probably more on your channel after you tackle this) :D

* I wouldn't worry too much about the cosmetic appearance of your gelcoat (unless deep gouge into glass). People will be more shocked about the upholstery and stitching....

Got a good chunk of the engine cover/ sun deck done.. just a bit more sewing... kinda stinks I won't be able to put it on yet tho cuz I need to do a little gel coat repair first and it's not warm enough yet...

Oh well, plenty of other stuff on the list...

MadProps have you considered steaming to get the wood to curve more freely?

Yea, but I had already coated the plywood with spar varnish and two coats of topside paint, so its kinda late for that... I honestly didn't think it needed to curve as much as it does... At this point, If I take it off the boat after a week and it still straightens back out and doesn't hold a curve shape, I'm going to just kerf the backside, coat it with thickened resin or epoxy, and clamp it back to the boat to setup (obviously with packing tape on the boat so it doesn't stick...

So, I have a backup plan...

Well I feel like today was a huge waste... I really wanted to get the outdrive installed, but I struggled with the alignment for a couple hours until I came to the conclusion that the lateral alignment was not quite right...

I decided to lift and support the motor by the thermostat mount and remove the bolts holding the front engine mounts... when I did this, the front mounts were not quite aligned with the holes i had drilled, so it looks like I'm going to have to remove the engine again, fill the holes, and refill them...

I already took my gantry down so that sucks... I guess I'm going to have to build a new one... ughhhhh

A bit more progress today. I got my new steering wheel installed... I ended up just going with black instead of the beige on that was in before because for some reason aftermarket beige steering wheels are hard to find and the ones they do have are either really expensive or super ugly lol... I like the contrast of it anyways... I also installed the aluminum trim piece for the ski locker... I had painted it with aluminum primer and then just white enamel spray bomb... I thought I would just sand it and give it the brushed aluminum look but it was a little pitted in spots so I filled the pits and primed and painted... I don't think it looks too bad... I also installed a neat side mount antenna on the hull so I can pickup radio stations on my headunit... freakin antenna wire was literally like 1/2" too short tho so I will have to get an extension...

Baby steps... honestly, I'm just kinda waiting right now for my epoxy to come in so I can fill my engine mount holes and redrill them so I can get the alignment thing figured out and the drive on... that stuff really needs done before I can do much more... i don't want to install the engine cover/sun deck before I'm done with major motor things... I also need the epoxy to finish up the bow side bolsters... I ended up kerf cutting them today and it worked awesome... so I'm gonna cover the hull in packing tape, fill the kerfs with epoxy, screw them in place, and let the eeeeeeeeeepoxy cure so they will set up in the correct shape.

Thats all for now on this front... Hope everyones staying healthy and not going too crazy....

If no chopped glass in kerfs/pb, maybe some real light glass over them to keep the fill in da kerf.
Looks good!

I'm planning on using the totalboat thixo epoxy stuff for the kerfs... I think it should work pretty well for this, its already thickened.. I wasn't planning on glassing over the back.. but maybe I can try a test board and epoxy it, and flex it around and see if any of the epoxy breaks loose from the kerfs..

I read that you can eat Mr Clean Magic Erasers to cure yourself from C19. The info is from a very intelligent, educated, hi IQ prophet.

I just got through reading this entire thread in preparation for the work (resto-mod) that I'm going to be doing on my Maxum. I must say that I have learned a lot and am 100% impressed with the work you've done. Since the main purpose / use of my boat is fish & ski, I'm not going to be doing quite as a high-end restoration as you have done here; but, I will certainly be doing a lot of the same stuff structurally. I sure hope it doesn't take me years to get mine back in the water at least. :joyous:

I feel much more prepared to take on the job. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the entire finished product.

You may want to check yourself into a psych ward after reading that entire thing...
thanks for tagging along...
Many people here have done restos way faster than me... so it can be done... a lot depends on where you live, what you plan on doing, if you have a family that likes you, etc.. lol

Good luck on yours
